Chapter 1

I allowed all the sound in my surroundings to be drowned out as I closed my eyes and slowly the sound of thousands of voices faded.

I am strong.

The voices resurfaced again and suddenly everything was loud again.

You are gonna win the whole fucking thing, because you want it more, and you have your pokemon with you.

"Alright ladies and gentlemen! It's time for the first match Indigo Conference past the preliminaries!"

Your gonna go out there and not settle for anything less than a complete shut out. Because the best of the best don't settle for anything less. And that's what you are, the best of the best.

The dark tunnel around me slowly disappeared as I cooled my nerves and instead of the artificial light that this dimly lit tunnel provided I found myself basking in the bright light of the sun as thousands of voices roared at the arrival of both their trainers that were rearing for a battle.

I still find it hard to believe that I'm a pokemon trainer, something that should be fictional, something that was thought up by the mind of Satoshi Tajiri, a fantastic mind, and my absolute favourite series of all time, I'm living every early 2000's kids dream.

Despite the pressure of the situation I couldn't help but let a genuine smile grace my lips that would look almost child-like. Well I guess I am technically only fourteen biologically but still in my mind I'm an adult so it should still count as unbecoming or something.

Nevertheless I just can't seem to stop myself from forming a face splitting grin whenever I have a pokemon battle. I can't help but play that iconic battle music from a bunch of different generations in the back of my head and feel a wave of nostalgia hit me.

Even if it's silly I loved all the pokemon games growing up, that was my whole childhood in a nutshell, every memory, all those hours when this was all just a bunch of damn pixels. Those sleepless nights where I'd eventually drop dead from exhaustion and have lucid dreams about being an actual pokemon trainer only to be disappointed when I wake up and find I'm in the regular pokemon-less world.

Well I don't need lucid dreams anymore, I've got the real fuckin deal!

The crowd finally quietened down after me and my opponent made our way to our respective sides of the battlefield.

The stakes were high, whoever wins this will move up to thirty second place, then sixteenth, then eighth, then fourth, then second and finally first. The preliminaries were honestly pathetically easy, it was just simple one on one's then two on two's which were no problem for my team, and I didn't have to show more than one pokemon since my first just beat their shit in.

However now it's different, the weak links have all been thinned now that we're onto the qualifying tournament it'll be three on three's, I doubt that a single pokemon will be enough on their own but that won't stop me from winning.

The referee held up his flag before speaking." The first match of the Indigo qualifying rounds will now begin-" he gestured to my opponent"- this match will be between Andy Birken of Cerulean City-" he then gestured to me."- and Asher Blight from Viridian City and sponsored trainer of the Viridian Gym!"

The crowd seemed to perk up at the mention of me being a sponsored trainer and looked me up and down, almost like they were analysing my soul. Admittedly I wasn't all that unique looking besides my eyes. I had brown curly hair and golden yellow eyes with me wearing black tracks and a white shirt, I wasn't much to look at sure.

But me and my mates will show them that looks really aren't everything.

The referee cast his arm down with the flag and yelled." Battle begin!"

My childish smile turned into a feral grin as I threw the pokeball of the very same pokemon that I've used for my other battles in this conference.

My pal Crust appeared in a white flash dead centre of my side of the ring with my Golem looking positively pumped up despite the fact that our opponent was a water specialist.

"Golem!" He yelled as he hopped on the spot and punched the air in front of him, clearly absolutely raring for a scrap.

My opponents pokeball also landed in the centre of his ring and released a Vaporeon which looked almost like what you'd expect between a cross of a dog and a mermaid. Only blue.

Speaking of my opponent himself he was actually a full blown adult because despite children being able to become trainers as early as ten this world essentially works like sink or swim. You learn through practical experience, not in a classroom most of the time, it kind of explains why Ash was such an idiot when the anime first started.

Well either that or he was just kind of a bad learner. Or both? Yeah probably both.

Anyways this guy looked like a massive cunt honestly, brown hair with blonde highlights, a cocky smirk on his face at my choice of pokemon and the fact that he just had this general vibe around him of being a prick left a bad taste in my mouth that I doubt would disappear unless I beat him three to zero.

"Why don't you just give up now? You've got some Golem against a Water-type, you don't sta-"

"Rock Totomize." I immediately cut off his taunt by ordering my old buddy Crust to do a combination of Rock Polish and Autotomize.

The result was instantaneous due to training. My Golem shined brightly as sparks seemed to fly off him and he shined so brightly that I had to briefly look away from him, but still we trained so that he could pull that off in just two or so seconds.

It's one of the tricky things about combination moves, doing one takes high focus on the pokemon's part and is usually a lot slower than just a regular attack, as a result most trainers don't take the time to develop them. I'm not most people.

Rock Polish and Autotomize are essentially the same in function however one uses Rock-type energy and the other uses Steel-type energy, this makes using them both at the same time tricky since he needs to simultaneously use two different types of moves at once separately to get both effects.

However all that practice bore fruit when Crust pulled that combo off instantly to get two boosts and triple his speed whilst halving his weight due to Autotomizes other effect.

This guy, I already forgot his name seemed pissed that I cut him off and barked out an order at his pokemon.

"Vaporeon use Hydropump!"

Instantly Water-type aura started to gather around the gaping maw of the eeveelution before launching a powerful stream of high pressure water that would blow a regular Golem away.

But who said Crust was a regular old Golem?

My grin widened." Rollout." I spoke simply and giddily at how I figured he'd react to Crust's fighting style.

My Golem instantly copied my grin and kicked onto second gear as he started to spin and roll at high speeds before immediately swerving to the right in order to evade the incoming attack.

The water however did keep on a straight line and was going to slam right into me. Or it would have if I didn't jump out of the way.

Pokemon can and do hit people in stadium battles like this on occasion and as trainers it's our jobs to fend for ourselves so that we don't get hurt during our pokemons match.

I got up with only a scrape on my elbow as Crust continued to roll through the battle field at high speeds and started to pick up the pace as he headed right for the Vaporeon.

The asshole guy didn't look so confident anymore and hastily spoke." Water Pulse!"

At the command Vaporeon immediately opened their maw and began to build up Water-type ener-

'SLAM!'

Crust immediately rolled into the side of the opponent at extremely high speeds that actually might have broken a few bones.

The evolution of Eevee flew high through the air and landed on their back with dust kicking off the ground from the impact and they let out a pained groan.

Their trainer quickly freaked out." Vaporeon, get u-"

Their voice was cut off by the crackle of electricity as my Ground-type stopped spinning and allowed his right fist to become coated in electricity before he cried out and lashed out at the already down Water-type.

This guy sputtered and gaped in disbelief as I blatantly beat his pokemon whilst they were still reeling back from a previous attack and the crowd which seemed to roar with excitement died down at the sight of such a 'cheap shot'.

I scoffed at the high and mighty attitude that the masses could pull at times, if my opponent wants to fight with honour that's their business, don't make it mine. I'm in it for the top not the bottom, I'll take any opportunity in front of me if it'll make that happen.

The Vaporeon cried out in pain as electricity arced around their body and after a moment they went limp and unconscious with those two back to back blows being enough for the job apparently.

Pokemon are weird, whenever they sustain a large enough amount of damage they seem to go into a state almost like hibernation, and they will remain like that until their bodies heal enough to wake up.

Pokemon just don't really make much sense in all honesty, they all seem to possess some sort of passive healing or telekinesis, be it how Water-types on land can sometimes have the ability to float or the fact that even if they take an Explosion to the face they'll be fine if they're strong enough. Hell just the fact that they can use Explosion is weird as all fuck.

"Vaporeon is unable to battle, Golem is the winner!"

A few members of the crowd start booing me for taking out an opponents pokemon so quickly but I payed them no mind. They're at best background characters and at worst NPC's. They don't really matter when it come to pokemon battles, they can't judge whether a battle is good because if they were good at battles then they'd be down here in the stadium, not up there in a seat with their cheap beer and their large hot dog for a too small bun.

My opponent Alex, I think that's his name, gritted his teeth in frustration as he recalled his pokemon and glared at it before placing it on his belt and picking up a great ball.

"Take them down Golduck!"

He threw the blue pokeball into the middle of his side of the battlefield and in a flash of white light a blue duck with a gem stone in the middle of their forehead took to the field.

I gazed at Crust, then back at the Golduck. My Golem was basically completely good to go and I don't doubt that he could continue should need be, however maybe-

Crust pumped his fists forward tauntingly at the Water duck, completely unafraid of the type disadvantage he was facing. And why would he?

Me and my team have gone through repeated drills in order to counter Water and Grass-types, because if we can do well against something we have a disadvantage against then we'll do amazing against pokemon we have an advantage against. Whilst type advantage is good and all your not always going to have it, if you don't know your weaknesses then your going to crumble when faced with them in the future.

Alex- actually was it Alex? Actually no it's Andrew, right? Okay Andrew. Andrew immediately yelled out a command for his telekinetic duck to follow.

"Use Psychic, Golduck!"

As soon as he spoke the Water-types eyes glowed an ominous blue and the gem on their forehead shined brightly before waves of Psychic-type energy were unleashed upon the battlefield and were heading straight for Crust at a rapid pace.

"Use Dig to dodge." I spoke calmly and simply.

When you get to this stage of pokemon battling it's practically a given that you know how to command your pokemon with minimal words. If you don't then you'll either hurt your vocal cords or not act fast enough.

Crust immediately acted and rolled into the ground to quickly burrow underneath the incoming attack with the waves passing over him harmlessly.

Andre- you know what I'm just gonna call him Cannon Fodder- Cannon Fodder actually grinned brightly." Alright use Surf, make sure that you flush him out!"

Oh you poor foolish chump.

Golduck immediately started humming and a small wave of water formed below his feet that he started to surf, it got bigger but it was far from impressive to me. Selena could easily do better than that and she isn't even a Water-type.

The wave of water swept over the hole that Crust was burrowed in and water started to seep into the hole that contained my pokemon.

"Oh would you look at that! Asher's move has backfired and his Golem is now stuck in a hole full of water!"

Oh right we have an announcer here for some reason.

Cannon Fodder's Golduck landed on my side of the field and watched the hole intently, likely in case Crust managed to surprise them. After he landed Cannon Fodder himself started to laugh like a maniac as he pointed at me. Dramatic much?

"Fu fu fu, you should have just given it up and saved yourself the embarrassment, a Golem would never be able to beat a Gol-"

A spike of rock immediately shot up from the ground and stabbed right into Cannon Fodder's Water-type with so much force that it broke apart when it hit his skin and threw him back.

At this Cannon Fodder stopped his dramatic monologue about how foolish I was, seriously people in this world just seem to love drama for whatever reason, as his pokemon was thrown backwards from the impact with a pained cry and a bruised gut.

Right after the Stone Edge Crust burst out of the ground and into the air and shined brightly with Steel-type energy as he dropped right onto the Golduck's gut with Heavy Slam.

The move sent the telekinetic Water pokemon slamming right down onto the ground with enough force to crack the ground and create a crater, this caused the opposing pokemon's eyes to bulge and their mouth to open wide with spit flying everywhere as they struggled to breathe and eventually it just became too much for them and they too fell unconscious.

At the sight of his second pokemon being beaten so handily Cannon Fodder's mouth hung open, he looked shocked, taken aback, fuckin bamboozled and for a moment the stadium was silent at the sight of a Golem having taken out two Water-types.

"Golduck is unable to battle! Golem is the winner!" The referee eventually yelled out.

Crust openly yawned in boredom from those easy two take downs and Cannon Fodder seemed to take offense to that.

"Stop doing that!" He yelled at me like a toddler even though he looks practically a whole decade older than me.

I decided to taunt him a little. If he wants to be easily pissed off then I'd easily piss him off." Stop doing what? Beating your weak ass mons in just a couple hits?!"

At my words the veins on his forehead seemed to suddenly become far more prominent." I'm warning you bo-"

"I'm hardly the boy here, and what are you gonna do? Send out another mon that I can one shot?!" Crust seemed to join in my taunting if him sticking his tongue out was any indication.

That seemed to tip this guy over the edge." One shot?! One shot?!"

Oh it seems he's a little angry.

He yanked a pokeball off his belt and screamed out." One shot this! Go Gyarados!"

He threw the pokeball and after it opened a light emerged from it that grew until a big blue serpentine appeared on the battlefield that looked extremely angry.

"Oh what's this?! Andrew has sent out his Gyarados! The strongest pokemon on his team! Will he be making a comeback?!"

Cannon Fodder expected to see me look shocked or in awe at the appearance of such a powerful beast appearing under his command, and I was thoroughly, absolutely... not impressed. This Gyarados was no bigger than normal and I could tell just by looking at it that it had absolutely no control over it's anger if the way it was snarling and snapping was any indication.

I smirked as a thought passed through my head and I told my Golem.

"Crust you've been the only one that's had any fun in this thing. How about this bastard picks on someone who's... a bit bigger than him?"

Crust's smirk seemed to widen at the implications of my words and he didn't fight being withdrawn, he only wished that he could see the opponents face when they realised how outclassed they were.

"Oh, what's this? Asher is recalling his powerhouse of a Golem! Are we going to see another of his pokemon?!"

At the announcers words Cannon Fodder scoffed with his confident smirk returning." Oh please. He's just realised how outclassed he is and wants to surrender and save himself the humiliation, like the coward he is."

Oh he is gonna regret that.

My grin turned feral as I replaced Crust's pokeball for an ultra ball that contains the largest and one of the strongest members on my team. I did say that I was gonna one shot him.

I picked the yellow and black pokeball from my belt before enlarging it.

"I meant what I said earlier Cannon Fodder, I'm going to beat your pokemon in one hit."

At the name I gave him the nobody sputtered but I didn't care, he doesn't matter in the grand scale of things.

"Go Colossus!"

I threw the pokeball forward with all my might and time seemed to slow down as it spun and flew threw the air and onto the far end of my field until it burst open in a white light that grew... and grew and grew and grew until the massive flash of light finally faded to reveal my pokemon.

His metal skin shined under the sun with ruby red eyes gazing down at the Gyarados that he dwarfed. He was made of several metal rocks that seemed connected together with three of them jagging out like spikes along his body and seemed to stare down at the puny ant that was Gyarados. Which suddenly didn't look so loud and proud anymore.

"What is this?! I had no idea that Asher had such a gigantic pokemon under his command?! Are Steelix even meant to grow that big?!"

The sheer size of my pokemon was on it's own a massive intimidation factor that made the once tall and prideful Gyarados now look like a kicked puppy. Never have I loved having metaknowledge more than now.

I found him around the same location that Bruno found his Onix, he was just over two times the size of a normal Onix back then and he's only grown after training and evolving also caused him to grown... yeah so he's a little more than just massive.

Colossus gazed around the opponents side of the battlefield, which was the only place he could really look honestly, he practically took up the whole of my side of the field and looked down at Gyarados, then back at me, then Gyarados again and me. He gave me a look that practically screamed 'really this guy? You called me out just for this?"

Colossus wasn't a big fan of fighting opponents that were weaker than him, he's a bit of a softie and surprisingly gentle for a giant, still I wanted to beat him in one shot.

I gave him a look." Come on, this guy needs to have his ego curbed, he was monologuing so much and yelled at his pokemon when they lost." Okay that was technically a lie, but he did yell at me, that counts.

Colossus then looked back at the Gyarados and sighed, as though he were doing a chore and not beating the shit out of a sea lizard.

"Hyper Beam."

He opened his mouth which immediately filled with an orange aura of normal type energy that would burst at any second.

Cannon Fodder then realised how fucked he was and started to fumble and panic before he finally uttered out.

"Quick use-"

A beam of orange energy erupted from Colossus's mouth and shot off towards the Gyarados who was panicking and tried to counter it with a quick Hydropump in the hopes that it'd do something to delay the inevitable.

It did absolutely nothing.

The attack continued and washed over Gyarados like water and an explosion of smoke occured where he was hit.

"Gyarados!" He yelled out in worry as he held up his arm to shield his face from the incoming smoke from the attack.

It must have lingered for a solid minute before it all finally fell and his Gyarados was revealed tall and strong... not. It fell backwards, charred and unconcious with it's head at it's trainers feet.

For a while the entire arena was silent before I finally spoke with my voice cutting though the silence.

"I said I'd beat you in one attack."
