Clearly, such a relic site had enough appeal to everyone present that the drivers and attendants who had come with the landlord and chieftain were also put to work on the excavation.
At that moment, the true meaning of the adage "many hands make light work" was fully realized. Ten minutes or so later, the entire cave entrance had been cleared, allowing Leonard to discern more details.
The first key detail concerned the staircase. It was evident that the steps had been carved out with metal tools, with the marks of the carving still being very apparent.
"This place may never have been used after it was carved out," Leonard speculated, unconcerned about his image as he lay on the ground to examine the stairs. He found the marks on the steps to be very fresh.
Whether stone steps like these had been used could be seen at a glance: had they been used, the ornamentation would have worn down gradually, to the point where the steps might simply become a slope.
