As one of the oldest diamond-producing regions in the world, India has produced many precious diamonds, including the Sea of Light, also known as the Great Mogul Diamond.
According to historical records, the first owner of the "Sea of Light" was Mughal Emperor Jehan Shah who ruled northern India. The diamond was presented to him by Mirjemila, a prince from southern India.
Mughal Emperor Jehan Shah cherished the "Sea of Light" diamond, which symbolized wealth, and hired top craftsmen to polish it into a high rose-cut diamond weighing about 300 carats.
Subsequently, the Sea of Light was treasured in the Mughal Royal Palace for many years until 1739, when King Nadir Shah of Persia led an army to invade the capital of the Mughal Empire, Derry. The Sea of Light and other famous diamonds were taken as spoils of war back to Persia.
