"We are delighted that you can donate such a thing to us." Two days later in a cathedral in the city of Osaka, the local bishop solemnly received the Jesus' Agony from more than 300 years ago from the hands of the priest from Nagasaki.
"I believe that our church will be able to preserve this precious historical relic intact, and let the divine glory continue to shine in this city."
Since the ancient and important oil painting had been in the hands of the priest throughout the process, Leonard saw the full picture of the item for the first time at this donation ceremony.
This oil painting is obviously from Europe; both the painting techniques and the style of the picture suggest that it was brought directly from Europe by missionaries at the time.
However, this painting was not just a simple oil painting, but was set in a golden wooden shrine, or rather, a lacquerware shrine that was clearly made with a local Japanese style.
