Although Van Gogh's paintings were not very popular during his lifetime because they did not conform to the main styles of his era, after his death, his paintings and his status in art history grew increasingly elevated, to the point where they became a source of pride for the Netherlands.
However, contrary to what most people imagine, Van Gogh's life was not one of poverty and destitution. To give a simple example, his brother subsidized him with 100-150 francs per month, while a teacher's monthly income at that time was only 75 francs.
It's also a bit of a stretch to say he was a talent that went unrecognized. After all, that was not the era of the internet. Everything moved slowly, marketing channels were not smooth, and it was not easy for painters to become famous. At least 25 years of practice were usually required before they could be accepted by the market.
