After realizing the importance of these ruins, the Greek archaeological staff member who came with Leonard and others immediately contacted their superiors and called in additional security personnel and some excavation workers.
The biggest advantage of this approach was that it allowed the already fast excavation speed to go up a level. They could even use their advantage in numbers to adopt a multi-point excavation strategy, significantly reducing the time required for excavation.
As a result, they excavated 34 exploration areas simultaneously within the boundaries of the ancient city to probe the underground conditions and determine the next excavation target.
Since Leonard had experience in excavating Crete ruins before, he was in charge of directing the excavation work at the site at this stage. Therefore, he quickly circled a location less than 12 meters away from the big gate inside the Lion Gate as the site for the first round of excavation.
