The crumbling walls had large scars and pits. This was because the urban valley's terrain sharply descended, making the walls' base lower than the opposite slope, resulting in a vulnerability in the Theodosian walls.

This weakness led to the decisive artillery bombardment ordered by Mehmet II in 1453, which included the Urban siege cannon, causing the current deplorable state of the wall.
