Chereads / Code Helix (Working Title) / Chapter 2 - For The Long

Chapter 2 - For The Long

As the man and the woman stood in the ethereal realm, they took a moment to gather their bearings. The initial shock of their arrival started to subside, replaced by a growing sense of awe at the beauty surrounding them.

The man proposed, "Before we start working together, it would be beneficial to acquaint ourselves a bit."

However, the woman responded firmly, "Let's not get too friendly. We're working together until we're done, and the sooner we finish, the better."

The man sighed at the woman obstinate prudence, "Our first step should be to search for a door, switch, or some other mechanism. There's no telling what can be considered an entry or exit in this enclosed place "

The woman nodded and added, "Something like that big door over there?"

The man looked in the given direction to see a huge conspicuous door, feeling incredulous at the nonsense of it all as he facepalmed. "How long has that been there?"

"You know, since the moment we fell in here," the woman said nonchalantly.

"You seriously didn't notice the giant door in the middle of the room?"

The man looked slightly embarrassed and replied, "Well, I guess I was too focused on our earlier conversation. I didn't exactly get a look at our surroundings. Let's not waste any more time. We should check out that door and see if it leads to an exit or a way to get out of here."

"Agreed. Let's get to it and find a way out of this place as soon as possible."

As they approached the colossal door, it slowly creaked open. The contents inside were obscured by a bright light, similar to the first door they encountered but even brighter. The woman hesitated,

"Doesn't this seem suspicious to you?"

"You're right; it does seem suspicious. However we have no other choice, we should proceed with caution."

The woman nodded, and they both took a moment to gather their thoughts. "We've come this far, but we can't let our guard down now," she said.

With their determination renewed, they decided to venture deeper into the unknown, proceeding with greater caution. Taking deliberate and measured steps, they remained ready to retreat if necessary.

After emerging from the door, the man and the woman found themselves in a completely different landscape. The ethereal realm seemed to shift and change with every new location they entered. This time they were standing on a floating platform surrounded by a vast expanse of colorful clouds. The air felt light and buoyant, and the distant sounds of chimes and gentle music filled the atmosphere.

"I must admit, this is becoming quite annoying." the woman expressed, clearly irritated.

"At least we agree on that." the man replied, acknowledging their shared frustration.

"Let's keep going."

As they explored the floating platform, they noticed that it extended further in the distance, leading to what seemed like other platforms connected by transparent bridges.

The woman spoke up,

"Perhaps these platforms are the key to progressing further. It looks like we'll have to navigate through them to find our way out."

The man nodded, agreeing with the woman's observation.

"You're right." he said

"It seems like these platforms are intricately interconnected, and they might hold the key to advancing in this mysterious place. Let's proceed cautiously and see where they lead us."

As they stepped onto the first platform, they felt a slight hum beneath their feet, almost like the energy flowing through the structure. The transparent bridge shimmered with a faint glow, giving an otherworldly appearance to the surroundings. They could see through the bridge to the platforms below and above, creating a dizzying but fascinating view.

With each step, they realized that the platforms had a mind of their own. They seemed to respond to their movements, adjusting and shifting in response to their weight and direction. It was as if the platforms were alive, forming a dynamic pathway for the explorers.

"Let's exercise caution as we proceed. I encountered a bridge akin to this earlier," the man advised.

"That's valuable information!" the woman responded, her tone conveying a hint of happiness.

"So, how did you navigate it?"

"I didn't navigate it; I fell through, and a creature saved me," the man said.

"Damn it," the woman said. "Can you try to call it?"

"I can't," the man replied. "The creature was a part of the bridge."

"What..?" the woman said, confused.

"It's a long story," the man said, "But let's not rely on that happening again. We should stay cautious and try to figure out the rules of this place as we go."

They continued to navigate the interconnected floating platforms, being mindful of how their movements affected the bridges beneath them. The landscape remained surreal and ever-changing with colorful clouds swirling around them. The distant chimes and music added to the dreamlike quality of the realm.

As they ventured further into this peculiar world, they couldn't help but wonder about the purpose of their journey and the nature of the realm itself. The woman finally voiced her thoughts,

"Do you think there's a reason we are here?"

The man considered the question for a moment as they walked along the floating platform, the ethereal landscape shifting everso around them.

"It's hard to say," he replied.

"We were brought to this place seemingly against our will and it feels like there's a purpose behind it. Whether it's a test, an adventure, or something else entirely, I can't be certain."

The woman nodded in agreement, her eyes scanning the constant changing surroundings.

"Whatever the reason, we should prioritize focusing on finding a way out of here and back to our world."

Continuing on their journey, their gaze was captivated by a massive cathedral suspended in the sky. This colossal cathedral, with its towering spires ascending into the ever-shifting clouds, commanded their attention, surrounded by numerous winged creatures. Its majestic and imposing presence stood in stark contrast to anything they had previously encountered in this mysterious realm.

The man and the woman exchanged glances, a mix of curiosity and apprehension in their eyes. It was clear that this cathedral held some significance in this mysterious place and they couldn't ignore the possibility that it might offer clues about their purpose here or a way to escape.

"We should check out that cathedral," the man suggested, his voice filled with a sense of determination.

The woman nodded, her gaze fixed on the distant structure.

"Agreed. It might have answers or lead us to our exit. Let's make our way there. But how?" the woman said.

"I got an idea how to get one of those things to pick us up." The man said

"Absolutely not, I will not trust that carry to me!" The woman protested.

The man frowned, realizing the woman's reluctance to trust the winged creatures they had seen in this ethereal realm. He knew that their options were limited and the cathedral seemed to be their best lead.

"We don't have many alternatives"

he replied, trying to sound reassuring. "

"We can't stay here forever, and the cathedral might hold the answers we need. If we approach cautiously and show no signs of aggression, maybe they'll be willing to help us".

The woman hesitated, clearly torn between her apprehension and the need to proceed. After a moment, she reluctantly nodded.

"Fine, if things go south don't expect anything from me."

With their decision made, the man and the woman began to carefully make their way towards the colossal cathedral, keeping their eyes on the winged creatures that surrounded it. The creatures appeared to be going about their activities, flying gracefully through the ever-changing clouds and paying no immediate attention to the newcomers.

As they got closer to the cathedral, the woman couldn't help but marvel at the intricate architecture and the ethereal beauty of the structure. The cathedral seemed to be constructed of shimmering; translucent materials that refracted the light in mesmerizing patterns. It was a sight unlike anything they had ever seen in their world.

"Heyyyyyy!" exclaimed the man with enthusiasm.

Which immediately caught the attention of the winged creature. The winged creatures exchanged glances among themselves communicating silently with their expressive eyes and gestures. After a moment, one of the creatures larger and more regal in appearance, stepped forward.

"We mean no harm," the man said, his voice calm and reassuring. "We're lost in this place and seeking a way back to our world. Can you help us?"

"We sense that you are not of this realm." the creature spoke, its voice resonating in a melodious tone.

"Answer these three questions truthfully and we shall grant you passage to the cathedral."

"Did that thing just talk?! And does it even have a mouth? Eww!" The woman thought.

The creature glanced at the woman for a moment as if it could read her thoughts.

"Creepy" the woman shuddered

The creature extended its graceful wings and addressed the man with a sense of serenity.

"First question: What is your name and purpose?"

The man stepped forward, feeling the weight of the situation.

"My name is Matthew Dnoumen,"

he began,

"And our purpose here is to find a way back to our world. We were brought here against our will, and we seek answers and a path home."

"And you" the creature said, gazing at the woman.

"What? He already answered for both of us." the woman voiced

The woman hesitated for a moment, still feeling uneasy about the situation, but realizing there was no other choice.

"My name is Chia Cinquefoil, happy now!"

she said, echoing the purpose Matthew had already stated,

"And I share his purpose in seeking a way back to our world."

"Huh… Chia, that's a unique name." Matthew said chuckling to himself

"What about it!?" the woman said flusteredly.

"Oh nothing, it's just a unique name. I expected a more mean name like Medusa or something.

She glared at him Intensely as he chuckled.

Ignoring the shenanigans of the two, the creature began to ask its next following question

"Now onto the second question, "What is it you value the most in your realm?"

Matthew and Chia exchanged glances, contemplating their answers. After a moment of reflection,

Matthew spoke first. "I value creativity, the ability to create bonds and chase after our dreams and aspirations."

Chia in agreement added "What I value most is family and its ability to stick together no matter what.

The creature acknowledged Matthew and Chia's response with a graceful nod. "Third and final question: "Will the both of you miss each other once you return to your world?"

Matthew and Chia both looked at each other in disgust.

The creature's question hung in the air for a moment, and then both Matthew and Chia exchanged a glance filled with a mixture of surprise and discomfort. It was clear that the question had struck a nerve.

Matthew was the first to break the silence, his voice tinged with annoyance. "Well, I mean, we've been stuck together in this strange world for what feels like an eternity. Of course, we'll miss each other a bit. It's only natural."

Chia nodded in agreement, her expression softening slightly. "Yeah, I mean, despite everything, we've been through a lot together. It's hard not to form some sort of connection."

The creature observed them both with a knowing look, as if it had expected this response. "Very well," it said, its tone unreadable. The both of you just lied.

Matthew and Chia exchanged puzzled glances. "Lied?" Matthew questioned, his brow furrowing. "What do you mean we lied?"

The creature unfolded its wings gracefully and began to speak. "You see, in this realm, honesty and authenticity are highly valued. Your answers to the third question indicated that you were not entirely truthful with each other or with yourselves."

Matthew and Chia were taken aback by the creature's insight. It was as if it had glimpsed into their innermost thoughts and feelings. They exchanged another glance, this time with a newfound sense of understanding.

"We understand," Matthew said, his voice more earnest this time. "We'll be honest. We may not always get along, but there's a bond between us and we'll miss each other when we return."

Chia, with her expression this time softened: "Yeah, what he said. We'll miss each other, even if we drive each other crazy sometimes."

The being expressed an amused mood and nodded.

"Excellent. Your honesty is acknowledged. You may now continue on to the cathedral. Although I must say that was quite the introduction considering you've just met."

The creature noted while chuckling.

As the majestic creature began issuing commands to the assembled beings near the cathedral, the creatures started to gather in a manner reminiscent of a flock of Starlings, crafting a captivating spiral formation that, astonishingly, transformed into a grand staircase. To Matthew and Chia astonishment, the flock transformed into a grand staircase leading directly to the cathedral.

"Ugh, stairs! It had to be stairs." Chia sighed in exasperation.

"Come on, let's go." Matthew urged, eager to proceed.

"There really isn't a choice, is there?" Chia sighed once more, resigned to the situation.

As Matthew and Chia ascended the grand staircase crafted by the winged creatures, they couldn't help but feel a mix of awe and trepidation. The creatures had shown a remarkable ability to manipulate the environment of this ethereal realm, and their encounter had left them with more questions than answers.

As they reached the entrance of the cathedral, the doors opened on their own, revealing a breathtaking interior. The cathedral was filled with an otherworldly light, casting intricate patterns of colors on the translucent walls. The architecture was both grand and ethereal, with towering columns and arches that seemed to reach into infinity.

Matthew and Chia stepped carefully inside, their senses overwhelmed by the beauty and majesty of the place. The air was filled with a sense of serenity and reverence. A faint, melodic chant seemed to emanate from within the cathedral.

As they progressed, Matthew began to hear voices in the distance.

"Do you hear that?"

Matthew asked Chia,

"Hear what? I don't hear a thing. Chia said, confused .

"No...it isn't that… does it sound like voices? People's voices!"

"Are you sure? I can't hear anything."

Chia said as she began to strain her ears to listen for said voices.

" I really don't hear anything, but if what you're hearing is true, then maybe there's more people here then just like us!"

Chia said hopefully.

"That is plausible." Matthew agreed. 'But why is it that only I can hear the voices?' He noticed for some odd reason that only he can hear such voices Matthew concluded.

"The voices are getting a bit closer. Let's go up further ahead and see what those voices are"

Matthew said, as Chia nodded agreeing with his statement. The two then begin to make their way forward with Matthew leading the way.

As they made their way deeper into the cathedral, the hallway seemed to stretch on endlessly, with no end in sight. The voices that Matthew heard continued to grow louder and more distinct, guiding them further into the heart of the majestic structure.

Chia's curiosity got the better of her, and she couldn't help but ask, "What do you hear, Matthew? Can you make out what they're saying?"

"It sounds like two people but I can't make out what they're saying."

The voices became clearer as they descended further into the depths. It was as if they were eavesdropping on a conversation between two individuals who were deeply engrossed in a discussion.

As they made their way out of the hallway, they stepped into a vast chamber nestled within the cathedral's grandeur. This chamber was a spectacle unlike any they had ever encountered. It was illuminated by a gentle, golden radiance that appeared to emanate from the very walls, casting a soothing glow throughout. Above them, the ceiling soared to great heights, vanishing into the boundless celestial expanse.

In the heart of this magnificent room stood two individuals who presented a striking juxtaposition . The first man was of lofty stature, his skin baring a fair complexion.Meanwhile, the other man stood in stark contrast, noticeably shorter, with a complexion that bore a richer, darker hue.

Don't you think it's time to leave the taller man suggested the taller man

"Nah" the short man replied in laid back tone

"It feels like we been here forever " replied the taller man

"We've explored every nook and cranny ," the shorter man responded. "We made attempts to leave, and you even put forth effort in seeking an escape route. At this point, our best course of action is to stay calm and chill."

Matthew and Chia exchanged glances, their curiosity piqued by the conversation between the two men. It was clear that these two individuals had been in the ethereal realm for quite some time, just like them.

"Excuse me," Matthew called out, "we couldn't help but overhear your conversation. We're newcomers here, just like you, and we're trying to find a way back to our world. Can you help us?"

The two men turned their attention toward Matthew and Chia, their expressions a mix of surprise and interest.

"Well well, it seems like we got some new faces here." The shorter man remarked with a smile on his face."I'm Marcus but you can call me Mark for short and this guy is Yosuke."

"I'm Matthew, and this is Chia," Matthew introduced themselves. "We're trying to navigate our way through this place, and we could use some guidance."

Marcus responded thoughtfully "Navigating this place can be quite the challenge, but don't worry; you're not alone. Me and Yosuke been here for a minute exploring and trying to make sense of it all."

Chia finally spoken up "How about we put our heads together and share what we learned so far"

"That an great idea" Yosuke remarked

With the two pairs of explorers now united, they settled into a more comfortable and hopeful atmosphere. Sitting down in the grand chamber of the cathedral, they began to share their experiences and knowledge of the ethereal realm.

As they talked, it became evident that the cathedral held a central role in this realm, and the winged creatures seemed to be guardians or guides of sorts. Marcus and Yosuke had been searching for a way out as well but had yet to find a definitive exit.

Chia couldn't help but voice her concern, "But how do we know if we'll ever find a way back home? What if we're stuck here forever?"

Yosuke placed a reassuring hand on Chia's shoulder. "We can't lose hope. This realm is full of mysteries, and there may be more to discover. We have each other now, and perhaps that's the key to finding our way back."

Matthew nodded in agreement. "Yosuke is right. We've come this far, and we can't give up. Let's continue exploring, together. Maybe we'll uncover the secrets of this place and find a way to leave."

With renewed determination, the four of them set out to explore the cathedral further, sharing their knowledge and experiences along the way. As they delved deeper into the ethereal realm, the mysteries and wonders of this place continued to unfold and the bonds of friendship between them grew stronger.

Before they could advance further, a cacophonous commotion erupted from the cathedral's upper reaches. The abrupt clamor from overhead jolted everyone, prompting them to reflexively gaze upwards in search of its origin. There, concealed within the radiant beams streaming down from the cathedral's ceiling, loomed a massive creature. With a thunderous crash, the creature descended onto a platform, unleashing a deafening boom that sent them into a frenzied panic.

In this otherworldly realm, they beheld a creature unlike any they had ever encountered. It presented itself as a massive white bipedal lion, adorned with a mane of feathers. Its enormous wings enshrouding its form and concealing the remainder of its body.

"Gahahaha," the creature chuckled. "Greeting humans, it's been ages since a human's last set foot in this place! Listen well humans, you're in the great presence of ARBELLA! And this marks the end of your journey!" it exclaimed with a saber tooth grin.
