Chapter 4 - A City Carved in Stone

The kobolds who had walked through the doorway were now looking at an empty city, illuminated by moss, dimly glowing light green. They continued into the empty city, cautious that this may be where the necromancer was.

They walked through the city, swords were drawn, large pillars were supporting the weight of the mountain here and there, and at the center of the city, there was a building, a palace of sorts. The palace was where they were walking towards.

As the kobolds made their way to the palace, the clattering of armor could be heard and it was getting closer and closer. Zack turned around with the other kobolds following suit and saw a group of armored skeletons approaching them with their swords sheathed. Zack turned to get away from these skeletons but noticed the kobolds doing no such task. It seemed the kobolds had been paralyzed in fear.

Zack tried to think of what to do, the group of skeletons which he counted to be 7 kept approaching. As he thought of what to do and as the skeletons got closer, Nev and one other kobold seemed to snap out of the fear, the skeletons were only 30 or so feet away now and Zack couldn't think of any way to win a 7v3 where the 7 had better equipment.

Because of this Zack ordered Nev and the other kobold to run away and once they abided by this, he ran as well. The 3 kobolds who escaped hid in one of the stone buildings as they heard the screams of terror and as they could only watch as the three kobolds were killed, they were torn into multiple pieces by the skeletons and blood flowed onto the floor.

Zack wanted to throw up. He had seen some gory stuff in games or shows, but nothing like this. This game seemed to be more realistic than he had initially thought. It took him a minute but he pulled himself together. He then asked a question to the two remaining kobolds.

"What is it that you two would like to do? We could try and head back or try and get to the palace in the center. Just know that the chances of survival seem to be slim either way."

Nev spoke up and said, "I wish to get to the palace, I don't want to turn back now, not after my allies lives have been lost"

The other kobold who survived spoke up, "I agree with this statement, we have gotten so far. I believe we should get to the palace as well."

It was still unknown to them what they would find in the palace, but to Zack, it would be better for them to have hope even if it may be false rather than be demoralized. Because of this, the surviving kobolds at a quick pace went towards the palace, avoiding the now multiple groups of armored skeletons roaming the city.

The kobolds had arrived 200 feet from the palace and were hiding inside another building.

"You guys ready to enter?" Zack asked.

The 2 kobolds responded with nods and so they all went towards the palace and noticed 2 skeletons standing at either side of the palace entrance. The kobolds unsheathed their swords and ran at the skeleton on the left side of the palace entrance. With no experience in using a sword, Zack slashed at the skeleton whose armor completely deflected the attack.

The skeleton attempted to attack Zack who was now a bit staggered from the recoil of his attack. Thankfully the skeleton's movements were quite choppy. As the skeleton's sword came down towards Zack, Nev stepped in and parried the skeleton's attack which was weaker than he had initially thought it was. The last kobold used this opportunity to dig its sword into the gap between the skeleton's chest piece and helmet and pried the skeleton's skull apart from its body. the skull dropped to the floor, its once glowing red eyes now extinguished.

The kobolds now quickly turned their attention towards the other skeleton who was rushing towards them without fear. They used a similar strategy, easily taking down the second skeleton. Now that they had killed the undead, Zack had a feeling that the necromancer might feel the presence of their undead being erased.

They would have to move quickly before the larger hordes of undead arrives, so they went into the palace and explored some of the halls, not encountering any undead while in the palace so far.

They quickly arrived at an armory within the palace. There were many weapons, shields, armor, and trinkets of many shapes and sizes in this armory. Zack decided that this was a good place to take a small break from exploring as well as look for better equipment.

There were rows of stands containing weapons on one side of the room and a chest on the other. The chest had an embedded gem that was dark blue, symbolizing it being a rare chest. Zack opened this chest and smiled at what was inside.

There were 4 different items inside the chest. The first was 3 minor healing potions, these were quite a common item and were able to restore health to whoever drank them. The second was 2 gold coins which were equal to 20000 copper coins, which you started with 1000 of. As for the third item, it was a blueprint for mana catalysts. Blueprints were able to speed up the speed at which technology was researched which made them very useful for the early game, especially ones like this one which could be used in many other technologies.

These three items were quite nice, but the fourth item was what excited Zack the most. It was an Epic rarity individual summoning scroll, something that was quite rare in a rare chest. He read the description of the scroll.

Epic Individual Summoning Scroll (Uses 1/1):

tear the scroll to summon an epic rarity individual to aid your kingdom. Must choose the individual's profession when the scroll is used.

As much as he would love to use this to get a really good researcher, he would have to escape this palace with the items he obtained to call this journey successful, so he decided he would use the scroll to gain a solider which would help him either escape the city or maybe even defeat the necromancer.

As he was deciding if there was a better option than a soldier, 5 skeletons burst through the armory door, it was now that Zack had decided to use the scroll. It was now or never, he hoped for a good summon as he tore the scroll in two and exclaimed "soldier!"

A blinding light appeared from the scroll and when the light faded, in front of Zack there was an orc, standing at over 8 feet tall, the orc was wielding a large great-axe which had gems embedded into its hilt. The orc had no hair and instead had three red stripes along where his hair would be.

The orc then exclaimed, "Fear not kobolds, for I am here to save you and to aid you in the building of your kingdom!"
