Chapter 1 - Prologue

2:12 AM, After Bedtime, Girl's Home

A rather plump figured yawned as it peered into the fridge, the light inside being the sole illumination in the house. Floors creaked and owls called as her tired eyes looked the refrigerator's contents up and down, in hope of a midnight snack revealing itself.

It was there in the shadows surrounding her that someone else stood unbeknownst to her. Bulging, crooked eyes examined her top to bottom, from her misaligned ankles to the bags beneath her eyes that were somewhat obscured by long strands of ink black hair. The presence at her side curled it's fist and gritted it's teeth as it imagine pulling her squishy hands apart, a once still heart began to race as images of her sobbing face covered in her own blood came to mind.

The girl felt a strange churning in her stomach that killed her appetite, she glanced around while mentally assuring herself that this feeling was nothing. With a sigh she closed the fridge door but before she could walk away she heard it: irregular, raspy breathing.

The girl's stomach dropped as the heavy breaths seemed to surround her, she a strange sensation in her head as if her thoughts themselves were being mishandled.

The ground began to curl in on itself as the walls began spinning, a sudden and violent illness overcame her. Heaving and dizzy the girl attempted to run away but was quick to stumble, falling hard and barely catching herself. She laid on the cold wood floor, trying her best to get up but her body was simply incapable of listening to the commands of her mind.

Crrrrrrkkkk

She knew that sound well, that was the sound of the wood creaking under the weight of another human.

Crrrrrrkkkkkkk

Every few seconds another creak and each time they were closer to her. Her wide eyes darted around where she thought she heard the creaks but she couldn't discern even the slightest shape in the thick dark.

Strange imagery found it's way into her mind, thoughts of her body twisting and contorting until it broke in such vivid detail cause the bile in her stomach to rush up her throat.

The girl quickly turned her head to the floor as she gagged up chunky thick sludge from her gut, her stomach feeling like it was turning inside out with each heave.

Her body trembled and felt weak like it was soon to crumble away but it was her mind to do so sooner as the shadows grew and covered her sight, consuming her being and leaving her blind. Her eyelids slowly fell over her emerald eyes.

The presence that felled her consciousness grasped at her sentience with the hope of taking it's place.

"Foul remnant, what is your name?"

The being's presence wavered, another unrecognizable voice spoke from within her mind with a deep hatred for the home's formless invader.

With no response given the voice inside her spoke again.

"Foul remnant, spectre from the other side, from what cosmic mistake was your power born?"

The voice knew that such beings were only the echoes of humans who had once lived and had no place having the power this one did.

"Foul remnant, stand amongst your pitiful crowd and remain your presence with knocking down picture frames and creaking the walls. You've far beyond your bounds now, warping this girl's mind and making your own of her headspace."

Finally, the ghost regained it's composure and replied.

"Voice. Why are you in her mind, if I'm foul for it!?"

"Because, as for her, I am God. She may not know it but we have equal rights to the soul inhabiting her body same as I to your body less soul."

"You have nothing of mine!"

"I have all of you, because, as for you, I am your God."

It's hand still in her thoughts, the ghost had it's own soul grasped in it's entirety.

The lights in her house flickered briefly and, with no sound, the spirit stopped existing with no fanfare.

"Goodnight, frail girl, I will watch over you as you sleep. This commotion should have awoken your progenitors from their bedroom, they will find you soon."

Stirring in her parents bedroom instantly confirmed the voice's words.

"In your consciousness you know nothing of me but, as with all things living or otherwise, your subconscious is devoted to praying for my mercy."

As the clouds rearranged moonlight managed to slip through her window and encircle her head like the crown of a duchess. She would sleep there for only a moment more before being taken to the hospital where she could recover with nothing but a bit some weak muscles. It would be reported as a concussion and that it was also the cause for her sensing the presence and the sounds but not having any visual hallucinations.

The girl would be kept in the hospital briefly, mostly just for monitoring, but would return home early after nothing wrong could truly be found.

This would not be the last time she encountered a ghost either.
