It's hard knowing that most pains in life are inevitable, like death it comes to us like a wind. It takes away our loved ones and those we even least expect and we have no say about it, the young, the old are all victims of this great mystery. Sometimes I think I have some kind of psychic power to be able to read the future or maybe its just a feeling I get most times, some time ago I thought I lost everything in life but I didn't, some part of my life still remaind and the day I met Derek Craig was the day I realized that. Derek was the son of Mr craig dean-curtis, Derek's father was a neurologist at Saint Peter's hospital Chicago, his mom passed away at birth it was a tragic incident for Mr Craig, it almost made him lose his mental stability but he pulled through, if I was to say anything about Mr craig I will say his a very strong man.
Derek was one of a kind, he was more than normal, to be honest he was unique. Before Derek was born he was diagnosed of neurodevelopmental disorder but the doctors couldn't detect what the outcome could be, when Derek was born his father noticed some low responses coming from Derek, at 5 Derek was diagnosed of intellectual disability but his father never gave into what the doctors were saying. Mr craig went far and wide, through thick and thin for solutions to help Derek but everywhere he went to he got the same result. At 9 Derek still couldn't walk on his feet, his father had to help out in doing every single thing for Derek, he was considered "useless" but not to Mr Craig Dean-curtis. Some months into Christmas October 23rd 1995 to be precise Mr Craig dean-curtis finally got a chance to have an appointment with one of the world's best neurologist Mr Yves Maël Pacchetto, he was a French man. He is a doctorate of medicine in neurology. When Mr craig met with Doctor Yves and told him about Derek's condition, he gave him hope saying "there is no problem that can't be solved", doctor Maël has handled several conditions like Derek's so it was no problem to him so Mr Craig believe. When Derek finally met Doctor Yves series of tests were carried out. When the results were out doctor Yves had called on Mr craig to see him privately in his office, Doctor Yves recommended some drugs as usual and told Mr craig that his sons case was off the charts that he hasn't seen anything like it before, Mr Craig almost broke down in tears but got a hold of himself, immediately Mr craig pleaded with the doctor to help him out in anyway he can that he was his last hope. Doctor Yves in his French accent got up with a loud shout "STOP! These nonsense Mr Craig I have done everything In my power to help your son, your son is........your son is entirely condemned and useless, please leave my office" Mr Craig with no hesitation quickly got up to leave his office, at reaching the door Mr Craig stopped and said to doctor Yves "my son isn't useless you all just blind to see it", Mr Craig slams the door behind him.
Mr craig was drained of energy, hope, faith and everything else, he asked God why him and he wept profusely, when he got on the train people thought he was some kind of lunatic patient who just got out of a psychiatric hospital, before he got on the train he stopped by a liquor shop and got a bottle of whisky, the cashier offered him his change but he said "what's the use after all life doesn't give us the opportunity to change things", the Cashier was completely confused when Mr Craig spoke to her. On getting to the door he put his hands in his pocket and goes back to the cashier and dropped extra cash on the counter and said I will have two more bottles and gave the cashier a cranky smile. Mr Craig finally got off the train, it was already twilight. He walked for hours upon hours until he finally realized he was lost; this was because he was totally drunk. Night time was setting and Mr Craig hasn't gotten home to Derek; while been drunk, he needed to take a piss. He saw a car close by having the appearance of a toilet; then he quickly unzipped his trousers and took a piss on the cars window, coincidentally the owner of the car was just coming out of his house; as soon as the owner saw him he quickly took a bat from his porch and shouted at him "Hey men what do you think your doing, get the hell of my Car" the man hasn't realized he was taking a piss at his car, as soon as he realized he pushed Mr Craig away from his car and he fell on the floor. The owner of the car was about to hit him when the police men on duty were just passing by; they pulled over by them and asked 'what's going on here?', the Man with the bat was just about to explain what happened but ; he was interrupted by the police man, asking him; "Did you hit this man" he said no I didn't this man took a piss at my car. One of the officers leaned down to look at Mr Craig's face and surprisingly it was bruised, am probably thinking Mr Craig had that injury long before he came across the Man. The officer asked him again "Are you sure you didn't hit him" the man said; "how many times am I gonna tell you I didn't hit him at all!". "Sir please Can you explain to me how there is blood on this Man's face?" The officer asked again. "I said I didn't hit him" the man exclaimed. The officers asked Mr Craig if the Man hit him, Mr Craig didn't reply he just looked at the officers and smiled foolishly, the officers didn't hesitate no more "That's it we taking you both to the station", "but I didn't do anything!" the owner of the Car cried out. At that point Mr Craig hasn't been home for 8 hours and everything Derek could possibly do is because his father thought him in the best way he could.
Derek never made it into school or even got a home teacher, no one was ready to teach anyone claimed useless; but out of the fatherly love Mr craig had he knew it was up to him to teach his son by himself. Derek made little improvements with time but hardly says a word more or less he doesn't speak, if he does his words are usually scrambled. It's been a tough childhood for Derek even tougher for his father. Many say it's a curse, some say he's paying for the sins his forefathers committed; but they all are fantasies which can have a drastic turn. I never knew Mr Craig's wife but am sure he loved her so much, she was Once told she would never be able to bring Children into this World but she never believed it. She was married to Mr craig for 12 years without a child, and as you have it people will always be people; things were said about them very terrible things were said. Neither of them could Walk on the streets without been insulted or ridiculed, it was a nightmare for them as couples. The day the news of the pregnancy came the Joy from her couldn't be explained; it was a miracle. Yes it was a miracle but a complicated one, after several months of Amniocentesis the doctors detected Congenital Abnormalities with the pregnancy. Congenital abnormalities are structural or funtional anomalies that occur during intrauterine life. The child wasn't in good shape for delivery so a Cesarean operation had to be carried out to anable the baby's survival, it was a situation of extrauterine pregnancy the baby had to taken out to develop outside the womb. This wasn't an easy task both the mother and the child were at risk of surviving, most cases only one survives or they both die, hardly do both the mother and the child survive. Everything was in order during the operation, both the mother and child were in good condition; hours into the operation the mother started loosing breath; she was having a bradycardia attack and it was critical, her heart rate started dropping drastically and the baby wasn't fully out; the doctors had to be quick with what they were donig. They salvaged everything they had on her to keep her heart rate steady but she didn't survive it. She went into a Cardiac Arrest and died within seconds, thankfully the baby was successfully out but wasn't breathing, the baby had to undergo CPR within the first few minutes of birth; still he didn't respond then it became a neonatal emergency.
Hours after waiting outside the ICU Mr Craig was waiting to hear from the doctor, the Doctor came out and asked Mr Craig to walk with him Mr Craig refused and asked the doctor to tell him all that has happened. The doctor didn't know how to brake it down to him but he had to do it," sir am so sorry none of them survived, we did all we could to revive the baby but nothing worked out" said the doctor. Immediately Mr Craig fell to his knees and wept hardly the pain he felt was unexplainable, it was like he could feel his Heart gushing out blood from his Chest; the Doctor tried to help him up but I think that only made matters worse.
_If she could had run faster am sure she would have gone faster, it looked like she was in a hot pursuite and anything that will come her way would get destroyed, her feet would have been said not to be touching the ground. The force she was moving with will be strong enough to push a down a fully metal plated 3 inches thick door down to the ground with no problem. She was so fast that she didn't realize when she passed the doctors office immediately she stopped to go back to open the door, her voice was so loud that it frightened the doctor. The first thing that echoed round the building was "HE'S ALIVE" instantly the doctor got up with confusion and asked the nurse who's alive?, the nurse replied immediately, "sir the baby is alive and needs medical attention now!". Straightaway the doctor moved as swiftly as he could to see the baby, when the doctor saw the baby crying and struggling for breath it was like a daydream to him, he couldn't believe his eyes. The only word that came out of the doctors mouth was "IMPOSSIBLE", Mr Craig who was sitting in the same office with the doctor didn't even realize that it was his own child the nurse was referring to, their deaths were already Registered in his head. The doctor spent about 30 minutes in ICU to keep the baby stable afterwhich the baby was taken to the SCN (special care nursery) for close Monitoring. As Mr Craig left the building he looked up to the skies and asked himself 'who am I?'. The doctor was done with the operation and went to get Mr Craig, the doctor couldn't find him anywhrere so he sent a nurse to get him, the doctor knew he wouldn't have gone far.. Mr Craig was standing outside the hospital when he was called upon by a nurse and directed to the doctor. "Mr Craig I think you need to see this" the doctor said, Mr Dean-curtis thought that the doctor wanted him to see the bodies before he leaves; "Doctor Barnes I don't think I'm ready to see anything now I would love to go and come back tomorrow" he said, Doctor Barnes interrupted him and told him his son was alive, Mr Dean-curtis couldn't believe his ears; "Doctor Barnes are you trying to make fun of me!?" Mr Craig asked, Doctor Barnes simply told him; "come and see for yourself", "What do you mean come and see for yourself, just because am in pain doesn't mean am Vulnerable to riduclement. It's been hours since you said they both died and now you come to me with your Damn coat telling me My son Alive!...I don't expect you to even understand what am saying, for twelve good years I was married with no kids and finally there was a possibility that I could be a father and now that possibility just died within minutes, you know what?....I don't think your qualified to be a doctor, you couldn't even save any of them..." Mr Craig said, Before he could finish his statement he gradually began to hear a child crying from inside and the doctor pushed opened the door for him to go in. The doctor could understand Mr Craig's devastating, he picked no offence in the words Mr Craig said to him, besides he faces situations like this Everytime. Mr Craig went into the SCN to see the crying bady which was his child and the Doctor Followed right behind him, this was something that could not be medically explained or proven possible, its beyond human understanding, it was a Miracle.
The baby was declared dead over two hours with no single sign of a pulse; this was definitely beyond normal. When Mr Craig saw his child he wept and smiled at the same time, the doctor Barnes told him Incidents like this are very rare, never give up on your Child Mr Craig he his a fighter. Derek spent a year in the hospital for close monitoring, his Father came frequently to check up on him but Nurse Patrica did the most, she took it up as a responsibility to take care of the child for the one year duration, it was indeed a selfless act.
