Chapter 38 - disaster

The music thumped around us as Emma and I stood by the drinks table, cups in hand. I took a sip of my drink, feeling the coolness wash down my throat, and glanced over at Emma. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she chatted animatedly about a new art project she was working on. The energy of the party buzzed around us, and for a moment, everything felt perfect.

"—and the colors I'm using are just so vibrant! I can't wait for you to see it," she said, her enthusiasm infectious.

"I'm looking forward to it. You'll have to let me know when it's done," I replied, smiling back at her.

Just then, the atmosphere shifted as a loud voice broke through the music, cutting through our conversation like a knife.

"Emma! There you are!" A tall guy with disheveled hair and a cocky grin pushed his way through the crowd, his voice booming.

I turned to see who it was and instantly recognized him—Emma's ex-boyfriend, Kyle. I had heard enough stories about him from Emma to know he wasn't the type of guy I wanted to deal with tonight.

"What the hell do you want, Kyle?" Emma asked, her tone turning icy as she took a step back.

"I just wanted to talk, babe! Why are you avoiding me?" He laughed, but there was an edge to it that made my stomach churn.

"Because I don't want to talk to you," she snapped, her patience clearly running thin.

Kyle leaned in closer, his voice growing louder. "You think you can just walk away from me like that? I'm not done with you!"

I felt my annoyance building, the noise of his voice clawing at my calm. "Emma, maybe we should step away—" I started, but Kyle cut me off.

"Who the hell are you?" he barked, suddenly focusing his attention on me. "You think you can just waltz in and take my place?"

"Just a friend, man. No need to make a scene," I replied, keeping my voice steady. "Why don't you calm down and hold this conversation somewhere private? This isn't the place."

His eyes narrowed, the anger radiating off him in waves. "You think you can tell me what to do? Who the fuck do you think you are?"

"Someone who doesn't want to start a needless fight," I said, trying to diffuse the situation.

But the alcohol clearly clouded his judgment. He took a step closer, raising his fist. "You think you can just disrespect me like that?"

I held up my hands, trying to stay non-confrontational. "Just chill, man. Let's not escalate this."

In that moment, he swung at me. My reflexes kicked in, and I ducked just in time, feeling the wind from his fist brush past my face. "Seriously, calm down!" I urged again, frustration bubbling beneath my skin.

Just then, his friends finally appeared, a mix of concern and confusion on their faces. "Kyle, man, chill out! What's your problem?" one of them shouted, trying to pull him back.

But Kyle wasn't having it. He shrugged off their hands, clearly too far gone in his drunken state. "Get off me! I'm not done with this punk!"

I stepped back, gauging the situation. "You really don't want to do this," I warned. But he lunged at me again, and this time I didn't dodge.

With a swift motion, I stepped to the side and threw a clean punch right to his jaw. The impact surprised him, sobering him up in an instant as he staggered back, wide-eyed.

His friends rushed in, grabbing him before he could regain his balance. "Dude, what the hell? You need to chill!" one of them shouted, dragging him away from me.

I watched as they pulled Kyle away, his protests fading into the background noise of the party. The tension in the air hung heavy for a moment, but Emma turned to me, her expression filled with a mix of apology and concern.

"I'm so sorry about that," she said, her voice softening. "I didn't think he'd show up tonight."

"What happened between you two?" I asked, genuinely curious. The encounter had thrown me off, and I needed to understand the context.

She took a deep breath, her eyes flickering with memories. "We dated for a few months last year. At first, it was great. But then he started getting possessive and aggressive, and I knew I had to end it. It's just—he can be really loud and obnoxious when he drinks."

I nodded, piecing together the puzzle. "Sounds like he hasn't changed much."

"Yeah, he's just… he's not good for me," she admitted, biting her lip. "I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I thought I could handle him, but he just… kept pushing."

"Don't worry about it," I said, trying to lighten the mood. "You handled it better than I thought you would. I didn't expect him to show up like that."

Emma managed a small smile, her tension easing. "Thanks for stepping in. I didn't want him ruining my night."

"Your night is still young. Let's not let him spoil it," I said, raising my cup in a mock toast. "To good friends and bad exes!"

"To good friends and bad exes!" she echoed, clinking her cup against mine.

We took a sip, and the taste of the drink was sweeter now, almost celebratory.

As we moved away from the drama, I felt a renewed sense of connection with Emma. The night was still full of potential, and I wasn't about to let one obnoxious ex ruin the vibe. With the music thumping and laughter ringing in the air, I turned to her.

"Ready to get back in there and show the world how to have fun?"

"Absolutely!" she replied, her spirit rekindled.

We ventured back into the crowd, weaving through the throng of people, laughter and chatter swirling around us. The night felt alive again, and I was determined to enjoy every moment.

With Emma by my side, I knew this was just the beginning of a night filled with unexpected twists and unforgettable memories.
