Monique walked towards a defeated Mia and sat down next to her. She then held her softly on the shoulder, and Mia moved to lean on her, sobbing more loudly than before.
"It's not fair at all," Mia said in between hiccups, and Monique only nodded, for lack of a better word to say. "Do you think it's fair that he doesn't care for me now yet am his only child?"
"Mia, I think you should talk to your dad, just to try and see things from his perspective. It might help," Monique said cautiously, keen not to push such a vulnerable girl away. She was moved seeing Mia break down for the first time. She realized that the girl had only been putting on a charade to try to act like she didn't really care when in reality, she did.
