Chapter 16 - Morning

When Colman went to Gardiner's study for his lesson that morning, he found the clergyman deep in thought, stroking his chin as he stared into space. Colman could only wonder if his mentor has slept at all last night, for he knew when Gardiner became deep in thought, he would neither sleep or eat. It was troubling behaviour.

"Master Gardiner!" uttered Colman.

Immediately, Gardiner looked at his pupil and said: "Ah, Colman. Good morning."

"What were you thinking about?" inquired Colman.

"You are sure what this Ruby told you was accurate?" asked Gardiner, gesturing for Colman to take his seat. "Her four times great-grandmother in the time of Henry VII? Is she certain? There must be a mathematical error! Henry VII's reign ended a century ago! Edward V's brief reign one hundred and twenty-six years ago must have been when it happened! How old would your grandparents be if they lived, Colman?"

Giving a shrug, Colman answered: "I don't know. Mid-seventies most likely, but I am not even sure if your math is correct, Master Gardiner. After all, Richard III only ruled from two years, so it could have happened ever before Edward V's."

Gardiner's countenance took on a troubled expression as he uttered: "A group of druids surviving into the time of the Plantagenets… Them surviving into the time of the Tudors would be worse, but this is just as bad."
