Saint Patrick's Cathedral had been founded in 1191, long before the existence of the Tudors ever could have been imagined. It had been the time of the Lordship of Ireland, ruled by the man who would become King John of England, a man as hated by the Irish as Henry VIII and his offspring were.
When Colman had first come to the cathedral, he had been turned out by the then dean John Rider, now the Bishop of Kildare. It was only when Gardiner stepped in and asked the orphan boy about himself, that his lessons with the clergyman began.
Stepping into the cathedral with Ruby, Colman looked around quickly. Many of the clergymen were in full agreement with Gardiner on his assistance that the Walking People stay away from the cathedral, including the current dean: Thomas Moigne. If that little rat Trevor saw Ruby, he would go running straight to Gardiner, they had to be careful.
Ruby could only stare in astonishment as she followed Colman into the cathedral. Never before had she set foot inside a structure so large and magnificent. She could wonder if this was all but a dream and hoped that it was not. If it were then it was a dream of the cruelest king. For sixteen years had she dreamed of setting foot in a place so grand, to wake up and discover herself back in a caravan would be heartbreaking.
Upon seeing Hugh, Colman froze. The one-eyed hunchback stood there with his back turned, polishing some candles. He was thankfully deaf, but still if he were to turn, he would run to inform his foster-father.
Alas, turn Hugh did. Though his face was only slightly deformed, his was the most terrifying thing that Ruby had ever seen in her life.
