Caroline Edwin and Nathaniel Daniel were chatting in the garden for a long time. When they stood up and were about to leave, they ran into Linn Daniel around the corner.
This little mite had been eavesdropping and, caught off guard by their sudden encounter, his face betrayed his embarrassment.
Looking at William Johnson's expressionless face, he decisively and earnestly apologized, "I'm sorry, Dad, I was eavesdropping on your conversation just now. I know it's not what a gentleman should do. I'll write a self-critique later."
He just couldn't bear to walk away upon hearing about his dad; he wanted to know more about him.
A bit of the ice melted from William Johnson's face, "Just this once. Don't let it happen again, and no need for a self-critique."
Seeing that he wasn't angry, Linn's ears turned red with the words he had overheard and he coughed twice, "Dad, could you squat down?"
William didn't ask what for and just as he squatted, he felt something soft on his face.
