Chapter 1 - Apocalypse

A little boy was staring at the sky with big curious eyes. He was still in his pyjamas and had stayed awake for a long time to just stare at the starless sky.

"Mark, it's past your bedtime now, stop staring at the empty sky and get into bed!" A tall man in his prime shouted from outside the room where Mark was in. He Was Mark's father and his name was John.

Mark softly sighed before looking away from the sky, and jumping straight into his bed. He was about to close his eyes when he suddenly felt the house tremble.

'Earthquake?'

He could faintly hear the sound of sirens blaring in the distance. He ignored it with a slight shrug before turning off his bed lamp and slowly closing his eyes.

----

"Ah~!"

Mark suddenly jumped out of bed as he looked towards the location where he heard the scream. Gunshots resounded throughout the street, as Mark curiously peeped through his window.

A large group of strange looking people gathered in front of their house, they were similar to zombies in the movies, but they looked extremely real. Suddenly a zombie looked up to Mark who was peeping through his window. His eyes were completely gray, and hollowed out.

"Holy!" Mark dashed away from the window and ran out of the room with a frightened expression on his face. He heard the sirens getting louder and louder with more gunshots resounding through the streets.

"Mark!" John yelled at the top of his lungs as he dashed up the stairs. His eyes were bloodshot and frantically darting around to find his son.

'I hope my son didn't turn into one of them, or else!'

Mark heard his father calling his name, and hurriedly jumped down the staircase, into his father who was surprisingly holding a pistol. Ignoring the cold metal against his arms, Mark hugged his father tightly.

"Mother..." Mark said as he released his father from the hug and looked into his eyes with a pained expression on his face.

Thud Thud Thud!

"She's alive, and not one of 'them'. Your mom Mary is hiding in the basement, let's go now!" John ordered as he heard the sound of someone pounding on the front door.

Mark followed his father with his heart beating out of his chest as he began to think about the people he saw earlier. His eyes narrowed as he fell into deep thought.

'Those things were definitely similar to zombies, but how did all this happen? This scenario is too similar to that zombie movie.'

Mark wasn't a naive kid who wasn't aware of his surroundings, he understood that this was somehow identical to the first episode of his famous zombie movie:

Undead Civilisation.

Being raised by a former military general, he understood that these things had to be killed until a cure was found. According to the movie, the cure could be created with the blood of a special zombie which was found in an island crowded with the infected.'

'In time, civilisation would eventually collapse, and man would fall into the apocalypse.'

Mark was pushed down a staircase before stepping nimbly into a dimly lit room. The room was spacious enough for eight huge tanks to fit in, and it was filled with various military gear, and at the end of the room sat his mother who was hugging her knees.

John ran to Mary with a depressed expression before sitting down and hugging her tightly. Mark stood still with his fists clenched as he heard the continuous wails, groans, and screams getting louder and louder, finally drowning the blaring sirens and sporadic gunfire.

"Zombies... This doesn't make any sense, how was it made and where did they come from?!" Mary said out loud with fear clearly portrayed through her tone of speaking. Her face was ghastly pale while her hands tightly hugged her knees as she rocked back and forth.

'Things would get more complicated in a few days, more innocents would eventually die, and the world would change.'

'I remember in the movie, that there was a large 'zombie free' city nearby. We have to get there if we want to live longer in this uprising pre-apocalyptic era.'

"Dad, shouldn't we head to the safest military zone for now, it's not safe hiding under a large city of the walking dead." Mark advised with a frown as he looked up the staircase. The zombies were still banging loudly against the wooden doors outside and the family could faintly hear it.

John sighed before falling into deep thought. He understood that they couldn't stay here forever and the city was now a chaotic mess, but he wasn't willing to risk the lives of his family by leaving here at such a time.

"Mark's right, we should head over to the nearest military base immediately. At least it'll be less chaotic than this place." Mary joined the conversation between father and son before slowly releasing her arms from her legs.

"I just don't want to ris-" John wanted to retort, but the sound of the back door being ripped apart jolted him to reality. He and his family wouldn't be able to live peacefully here, if they stay, sooner or later more zombies would come looking.

'Weapons, ammunition, food, shelter. We all need this to survive in a world full of zombies.'

Mark stealthily walked up to a corner and nimbly grabbed a black golden striped gun before dashing back to his father and pointing at the wall. He stabled his breathing and closed his eyes before firing the gun at the wall, his hands jerked back from the recoil force, but Mark ignored it.

Bang!

A miserable shriek from a dead zombie rang out as John stared at his son in shock. He hadn't wanted to make Mark kill any zombies so the sudden shot from Mark shocked him.

'Mark... I'll kill every zombie I come across if anything happens to you!'

Mark holsters the gun, while his mother and father completely looted the entire basement. He swiftly grabbed a bag containing large rounds of ammunition, and walked up to his parents who all had taken weapons and food with them.

John walked up the staircase of the base to the door and kicked it open. He slowly walked forward while searching for any 'zombies' in the house.

After searching, John signalled for Mark and Mary to follow as he swiftly moved forward without dropping his guard in the slightest.

Mark was on full alert as he vigilantly looked around. He drew out his gun before aiming at the door which was being banged by the zombies earlier.

Bang Bang Bang!

Pained shrieks rang out as the bullet tore through the heads of the zombies quietly standing outside the door. Mark broke into a cold sweat as he frantically looked around himself.

'They so quiet, could it be that they have a little bit of intelligence left?'

Suddenly the back door burst open as four people slowly walked into the house.

One female and two males. Their clothes were ragged and bloodied while their face was unnaturally pale with deep black bags under their completely gray eyes. Letting out a low groan and stretching out their hands, the three zombies madly dashed towards Mark.

Mark, seeing the situation unhesitatingly opened fire on the zombies. The bullets from Mark's gun pierced into the zombies' heads, killing them in an instant.

The bodies of the zombies awkwardly dropped to the ground after losing their life permanently. John wordlessly stepped over them and walked out of the house through the burst open door.

'No...'

Mark looked around himself in denial as warm tears streamed down his face.

Laying on the ground around him were the bodies of various people. Some where related to Mark. His friends, and neighbours, all lay on the road besides abandoned vehicles.

"Growl..."

A male zombie wearing tattered clothes hastily approached Mark with drool dripping down from the edge of his mouth.

Mark disdainfully lifted up his gun, which he had named [Dead Hunter] and swiftly pulled the trigger.

Bang!

The zombie's head was blown off by the explosive power of [Dead Hunter] before his body awkwardly fell back to the ground.

Mark then looked over to his father, Johm expectantly. John then nodded in affirmation before walking forward, and signalling for his family to follow.

And so, the family ventured into the city, aiming to escape this purgatory.

Mark spared a look behind before steeling his nerves and running after his parents.
