After hours, she stood up and crept out of the alleyway. An older woman passing by gasped and rushed to the girl's side, "SOMEONE CALL AN AMBULANCE!" More people ran over to her, causing her to start shaking in fear. "Pl-please don't hurt me," whispered a hoarse but still soft female voice.
Someone in the crowd spoke up over the loud chatter, "That's the missing girl." Sirens could be heard in the distance, quickly approaching as the public started to disperse, looking at missing person posters and returning to what they were doing beforehand. The girl smiled as the adrenaline left her; she thought she would escape this life as she lost consciousness. Cops and paramedics arrived after she collapsed on the sidewalk.
After several hours the girl woke up, slowly gathering her surroundings. To one side was a nice-looking nurse tending to my IV drip, and near her, sleeping on a chair, was a tall, lengthy boy who looked similar in age to me but is a slightly darker skin tone than I am. "Glad you're awake, Ms. White! I'll notify the doctor." The nurse smiled, walking out as the teenager jolted awake at the sound of her voice. "Huh? Lexie is awake!?" He jumped up, towering over the hospital bed.
"Who are you? Please don't touch me! I didn't mean to run away!" The pale girl named Lexie shrunk into the bed, terrified of what might happen to her. The boy stepped back softly, apologizing for scaring her, "It's okay. I won't hurt you or let anyone hurt you again.." A female doctor with a kind smile walked in, glancing between the twins. "Glad to see you awake now, Miss White. I'm Dr. Thomas, and I'll be monitoring your recovery. I've spoken to your father briefly, along with the police. You came in with many fractures, a punctured lung from a broken rib, and horrific blood loss."
"Wait, you said, father? My mother has had custody of me since I was five years old. There's no way that he would be the one dealing with this." Lexie sat up, clearly confused and baffled that her mom would take the risk of losing custody. "When can she go home with us? She can't go back to wherever she got those injuries." Both frowning, a man in his mid-40s walked in with a police officer. "Calm down, sonny; we don't know where she got hurt like this or who did it."
"Dad! You know you can't separate us again! Just look at what state she is in!" The boy raised his voice angrily, causing Lexie to flinch. "Who are you guys? Why is this such a big deal to you?"
Both males turned to her with hurt looks, the teenager even more so. "Lexie, don't you remember me? It's Alexander. Your twin.." His voice cracked as he looked at his twin sister shaking her head. I stuttered, baffled and in shock by his words. I have a twin, and I didn't even know who he was when I woke up. "T-they said my twin forgot about me and moved on... She said you wouldn't even remember my name." As he stepped closer, I could see the same striking, bright green eyes I had. He also had the same sharp jawline and defined cheekbone structure as me.
Alexander stepped closer and gently grabbed her hand, "Never. I could never move on from my twin. We're supposed to be best friends for life, and that chance got ripped away from us as kids." I smiled softly at him, feeling guilty that I didn't recognize him. "We can get to know each other while I'm stuck here." He nodded and smiled softly, hoping they could reunite and get along.
I had been here for three weeks now; Alex stopped in every day after school in an attempt to bond with me to make up for the lost time. The doctors tell me that my rib is healing, as I'm only allowed to do some physical therapy until my lung and ribs look better. When one of the men kicked and stomped on me during my escape, it caused my already broken rib to puncture my lung during impact. At least, that's what I think happened since most of that day was a blur to me. Daily sessions with the hospital's psychiatrist have been to cope with the trauma from my mother.
