Chapter 2 - Awoken

My eyes opened as I regained my consciousness, my whole body ached. The tumble I had taken had littered my body with bruises and cuts, It felt like i had just been hit with by a truck it hurt so bad. But I can't just sit here, I gotta get out of this hole and find myself some water. From what I recall from before I fell I really needed some water and soon. Being thirsty back then you can imagine what being asleep for around a dozen hours would do to your body. Cramps combined with bruising was not a pleasing combination. Looking around me I took in the cave i had fallen into, dark brown walls burrowed through by roots held up the cave, the floor was a moist dirt that acted as one of the only comforts with it's soft and squishy texture. Begrudgingly I forced my up, although it hurt like hell I persevered and managed to get my body to stand, albeit barely. Still being unfamiliar with my changed body walking was difficult but I managed to get over to the uphill hole that stretched for quite a while. I started my ascent to the surface, tripping over roots and stones jutting out from the dirt. After the hell of a climb I just went through the warm glow of green and blue lights from the surface filled me with comfort.

After emerging from the hole the feeling of that strange blue grass under my feet was soothing. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in through my nose. The fresh air seemingly made my body lighter, it's smell brought a calm and collected state of mind over me. With everything going on it was a nice moment of tranquility, a much needed break from the constant aching of my muscles which had seemed to ease up with the return to the surface. Opening my eyes after the moment of peace I took in the beauty of the environment. Colossal trees made up most of the great expanse, blocking the view of the sky. The trees gathered in places, making a dense forest in areas. The blue grass stretched along in a flat line, a path opening up further ahead where I spotted a lakeside. That thirst creeping back up on me I started in the lakes direction, I can take in the scenery later.

After a short walk I now stood over the lake, the water was very dark, not being able to see what was underneath. However what i did see almost scared me to death. In the dark reflection I saw two yellow eyes glare back at me, those eyes attached to a scaly dark gray lizard head. My whole body jumped and I fell away from the reflective water, my instincts telling me a predator was just staring right at me. However, no creature was seen, I was alone, safe. As I stand on my four legs I muster up the courage to take another peak at the reflection. As I slowly inch my head over to the water I see a snout slowly come into view, the same pair of cold yellow eyes soon following. Well, that settles it. I have SOMEHOW changed into a lizard. I don't know how, I don't know why. Staring at my unfamiliar reflection I struggle to accept it. How? Why? What ever happened to being a normal guy? Why can't i even remember anything, that would certainly help explain the fact that i'm a god damn lizard. Trying to take my mind off things I put my snout down and open my mouth to try get some fresh water. Only for that cold water to run straight up my nostrils. I have to remember i'm not human anymore. Trying to think of something else I accidentally flex my nostrils and to my surprise they close. Since when could lizards do this? Also wait, don't they drink water through their feet or something? I put my feet in the cold water, after waiting for a minute nothing seems to be happening. What's up with that? Am i different to a normal lizard? Instead of trying the normal lizard drinking technique i close my nostrils and put my mouth in the cold water. I gulp it down with glee as some method actually works. As i'm drinking the thought of not being a normal lizard is quite strange, what sort of lizard can't drink through their skin and can close their nostrils? However as i'm focused on the thought a gut feeling suddenly erupts, filling me with a sense of urgency. What's going on? Am I in danger? I pull my snout from the water and hastily look around, I look all around me, to the sky, the trees, the ground and all around me. But I don't spot anything. After cautiously searching for any signs of movement or danger I relax a bit. Must be a false alarm, but at the same time should i really ignore a gut feeling? Suddenly…

*SPLASH*

Something too fast to even track with my eyes rockets out of the the water and bites straight through my back leg, a searing pain erupts through my body as my muscles move automatically, swinging my claws back I manage to push the creatures mouth away, Making it fall down and flop on the ground. I look over to the flopping mess and get a visual on my attacker. It's a fish, a big one. About half of my length and twice as tall it looks vicious with its red and gray coloured skin. Large spikes protrude out of it's spine looking incredibly sharp. Would not want to get pierced by those. It's mouth is wide open revealing rows of jagged teeth, It's eyes are a dark yellow with beady little pupils in the middle. Horrible! A shiver runs through my spine. What kind of monster fish is this? I've never seen something like this ever, must be a new species or something. Well i guess everything has been new here, wherever 'here' is. The fishes constant flopping has been rewarded with it's body drawing closer to the lake. Crap! I spent too mush time thinking, i gotta kill this thing! I take a step towards the fish before the pain of my bitten leg returns, even worse. I stumble as my leg collapses after the pressure I put on it. Dammit! I gotta kill that thing! Trying to ignore the pain I clumsily approach the fish as fast as I can, just as it's about to return to the lake I swing a claw at it, hitting the sharp spines in the process. The pain hurts like hell but that was the only angle I could hit it from. The fish slides away from the lake scooting over the grass. It's flopping becomes erratic as it throws a tantrum, it's plans thwarted. I look back down to the foot I hit the fish with, two spines are lodged into it with one going straight through it. Bringing the foot up to my mouth I bite down on the spines and rip them out. Although it hurts I can't afford to care right now. With basically two of my legs disabled walking is hard, but i manage.

Finally looming over the fish It's flopping becomes desperate as it snaps at me, although I respect it's space, hard enough with two legs injured. Can't risk a third. The fishes flailing slows down after a while, I'm surprised it's been able to survive on land for so long, any normal fish would have run out of oxygen by now. But not you huh? Damn superfish. The fishes eyes are locking onto me, waiting to see what i do. Unfortunately for you fish I'm staying here till you die, playing it safe. Then the fish starts doing something strange, it closes it's mouth and starts convulsing. Is it running out of air? I'm not sure but I back away just incase.

Then with a quick *bang* water rockets out of it's mouth, pushing the fish backwards and into the lake again. My body snaps into action but it's too late, the fish is long gone. Dammit! What the hell?! How did it do that? Arrrrgghh! Shit! There goes my only chance of food! Should've killed it when i had the chance, but how could i see that coming? Water just magically shooting out? And that fish was huge! How the hell did that water even push it back? I look back to where the water had hit the ground and am surprised to see a portion of grass has been blown back, along with some dirt unearthing. The water dug into the ground? How fast had that water jet gone? Slumping down at my impossible and confusing failure I lick my wounds, I don't know why but i do. Maybe it'll help? Sulking back to the tree I was at before I make another crappy leaf bandage and wrap it around my wounds. I glance down the hole to the tree cave I fell down, hell no. Not doing that again. I'll definitely slip in the state i'm in. The forest has started to darken and cool down. Guess i'm sleeping out here tonight. I manage to make a small leaf bed to give me a small amount of warmth. It's the best I can do right now anyway. My eyelids become heavy as I lay down and drift off.
