The monks of Xuantian Temple were few, and most of them were muscle-bound ascetics. Aside from the several rows of houses centered around the Great Buddha's Hall, there were a few scattered cottages sitting atop the surrounding mountains.
There was a time when Han Miaojun would eat vegetarian meals and chant sutras on one of those mountaintops, cultivating her character. As a result, a bad-tempered old lady only got worse.
It was particularly evident that merely eating vegetarian and reciting sutras without finding Buddha—medicine couldn't cure a terminal illness, and Buddha would only save those with fate. Without a compassionate heart, not even wearing out the Wooden Fish would earn you a glance from the Buddha.
Of course, filling the merit box or gilding the Buddha statue is another story.
Not just the abbot, but even the Buddha would slightly smile and think you possess a wise heart, destined to be with Buddha in your next life.
This life... well...
