The incident hadn't died down as an exhaustive search was carried out at the hospital. The things that were found at the hospital were beyond anyone's expectation. The bodies of nineteen children and an adult female was found, hidden in a storage room. The bodies were immediately sent the coroner for medical examination.
"He made me do it" The man said with a feeble voice. It was the same sentence he had been saying since the interrogation started. It seemed like that was the only thing he could utter from his mouth. Oliver could feel the ire rising up within him. He laid back on the metal chair, letting out a heavy breath. He needed a smoke.
"So you're saying that you killed the children and the director of the orphanage?"
the man nodded slowly.
" I tricked her into thinking I would help get money, but I had another plan".
Oliver's body went stiff. Something was adding up.
"Is your name ashbourne?"
The man's face went pale, as if he had seen a ghost. There was a brief moment of silence before Oliver asked again, his voice sterner than usual.
" is your name ashbourne?"
the man could tell Oliver was being serious and nodded in response.
" What was your intention for doing all of this?" Oliver asked.
" it wasn't my fault, H-He made me do it" the man replied in an unstable voice.
Oliver clenched his jaw tightly. The words felt like they were dancing on his brain. He shifted in his seat trying to not loose the small ounce of patience he had left. "Who made you do it?"
the man went mute. This was the reaction Oliver got whenever he asked this question. They had been going round in circles and now they're back to square one.
Even though it was summer, the atmosphere was cool. Oliver stood in an alley way, his back to the wall. There was a no smoking policy in the office, which made Oliver come to this alley way whenever he needed to smoke. He took large puff of his cigarette, letting it linger in his mouth for a while. He liked how relaxing it made him feel when he smoked. Although, he started smoking back in high school because he thought it was cool, now it was a way to relieve his stress. He felt his tense shoulders relax as he exhaled, releasing the smoke he had retained in his mouth.
" Hectic day?"
Oliver turned his head to the direction of the voice. It was chief Bradley.
"Well, for the most part."
Chief Bradley rummaged through his pocket for a cigarette.
"You got a lighter?" he asked as he put the cigarette between his lips.
Oliver handed him a lighter. Chief Bradley wasn't one to smoke during working hours which made his presence spark Oliver's curiosity.
" The autopsy reports just came in."
Oliver cringed. He detested having to talk about work during his breaks, but he couldn't tell chief Bradley that so he let him talk.
" the corpse of the children had one thing in common" he said, pausing to take a puff of his cigarette.
" their liver and kidneys were missing."
"So their organs were harvested for money."
Chief Bradley nodded.
"The director's corpse was a different case. They found traces of an unidentified chemical in her bloodstream."
"Unidentified chemical?" Oliver asked.
"Mhm. The coroner thinks she was experimented on." Flashbacks of the night at the hospital flooded his memory. If they hadn't found Maria on time, she would've been the next guinea pig. He shivered at the thought of Maria ending up like the director. Chief Bradley threw his cigarette on the ground and crushed it.
"We still have a lot of work to do, so be back in five." Oliver nodded, watching the chief walk back to the office.
Maria stood at her front porch, searching her bags for her keys. Her stay at the hospital was longer than she expected. She couldn't wait to come back home and get back to work. She couldn't wait to see Oliver again. Although she was sad that he hadn't come to see her while she was hospitalized, she knew he was busy and decided not to hold it against him. Immediately she opened her door, she was greeted by her cat.
"Did you miss me momo?" She said, picking her up and pulling her into a tight embrace.
She walked into the living room and turned on the light. Her living room didn't have a lot of furniture. Every since she moved in, she hadn't had time to decorate, which didn't bother her. She was comfortable with the way it was. She dropped momo down but she kept nuzzling herself close to Maria.
"I'll play with you soon okay?" she said stroking Momo's fur.
Feeling a bit drowsy, she headed to her bedroom to freshen up and take a nap.
Maria was awoken by the sound of her doorbell. It was 7:35pm. She wondered who could possibly come to her house by this time. She reluctantly got out if bed and headed towards the front door. She looked through the peep hole and saw a familiar face. Oliver stood at her door, arms folded while he looked around. Maria's heart almost flew out of her mouth. She was happy, at the same time queasy. She had never dreamt that the man she was in love with would be standing at her doorstep. She opened the door and smiled at him.
"Hey, sorry I came here a bit late, work was hectic today."
"I can imagine." Maria said, letting out a small chuckle.
"can I come in?"
Maria nodded, opening the door a bit further to let him in.
"Tea?"
"Tea's fine." Oliver replied, making himself comfortable on the couch.
Momo walked up to him and nestled herself close to his foot.
"you have a cat?" Oliver asked as he picked her up. "Yeah, she likes people a lot so be nice to her" Maria replied from the kitchen.
Oliver stroked her head while he examined the living room. The design was very minimalist. The walls were draped with a black and white wallpaper. The living didn't have a lot of furniture except for two white sofas and a circle shaped table in between them.
" Do you want sugar in it?" Maria said as she poked her head through the side of the kitchen door.
"No, plain is fine."
She nodded. After a few minutes, Maria came into the living room, putting two cups of tea down on the table. "Thanks." Oliver said, taking a sip of the tea.
"How are you feeling now?"
" Way better than I did before." She responded.
there was an awkward silence after that. The air felt tense. Maria found it hard to bring up a conversation because of how nervous she was feeling.
"The autopsy reports came into today." Oliver said, trying to break the ice between them.
He proceeded to give her a rundown of the autopsy. "I wonder why he was experimenting on her." Maria said, putting her cup of tea down on the table.
" That's what I'd like to know too." He said.
"Hey, Oliver.." Maria said, her voice as low as a whisper.
He turned his attention from the cup of tea, to her.
"I was thinking if maybe, we could go out for drinks tomo-"
she was interrupted by the sound of Oliver's ringtone. "Sorry, I have to take this." He said as he picked up his phone and headed towards the front door.
He wasn't too far away, making it easy for her to eavesdrop on his conversation.
"yes, yes I'll be home soon."
"No, I didn't go out to drink. I've been at work"
he sighed.
"I'll be home soon, I love you."
Maria's heart sank when she heard those words. She knew Oliver was in a relationship but that didn't stop her from falling for him. She watched him as he came back into the living room.
"Sorry, I have to leave now." He said with an apologetic look.
"That's okay." Maria said, giving him a small smile.
It was the only thing she could muster. She walked him to the front porch and they said their goodbyes. She still stood there watching him drive off. She felt an emptiness creeping inside her.
"You're back!" Kenna exclaimed as she wrapped her arms tightly around Oliver.
She loosened her hold on him and gave him a kiss. He raked his hands through her platinum blonde hair, enjoying every moment. He planted a kiss on her forehead which made her giggle .
"How was work today?"
" As stressful as always" he replied.
"What did you do today?"
"Mmmm, just a little shopping" she replied.
Kenna didn't have a job. Rather, she didn't need one. Her father was a Rich politician. He supplied her with everything she could possibly need. The house they are currently living in was given to her by her father. When they started dating, she insisted that Oliver should come live with her. He agreed to her proposal after she pleaded a lot.
"Honey, let's do it today."
Oliver gave her a tired look. She knew his situation but still insisted. Two months after they started dating, Oliver couldn't get it up again. Whenever he tries to put it in, it becomes flaccid. They kept on trying, but ended up with the same results.
"Don't worry, I'll try my best today."
Oliver sighed. He always found it hard to refuse her.
Oliver lay on the bed, watching Kenna as she slowly took of her clothes. Her body was perfectly shaped, from her breasts to her hips. She was perfect. She got on top of his and began to kiss him deeply. Their tongues intertwined, sending waves of pleasure through her body. Oliver traced his fingers down her back. She withdrew her lips from his and made her way down to his hips. She began to stroke him slowly. She used her tongue to tease his tip before putting it all into her mouth. He let out a small moan as she moved her head back and forth. She could feel him slowly getting hard in her mouth. When he had gotten completely hard, she tried to put it inside her. He became flaccid immediately it touched the entrance.
"I-Ill try again." She said almost frantically.
"It's fine, you don't have to." Oliver said stroking her cheek.
Kenna looked really sad, which hurt Oliver a lot. He knew that she blamed herself. He pulled her closer and gave her a kiss on her forehead.
"Let's just sleep."
Kenna nodded, snuggling closer to him.
"Oliver?"
"Hm?" He replied.
There was a slight pause before she continued.
"Do you love me?"
Oliver looked at her.
"Of course I do." He said, Stroking her hair.
"please don't leave me, ever" She said as she buried her face in his chest.
"I won't" Oliver replied, kissing her forehead again.
The night seemed longer than usual. Maria lay in bed, trying to fall asleep. The bed was cold. It would have been colder if momo wasn't there. She couldn't stop thinking about Oliver. When she realized she had feelings for him, she had brushed it off as just an infatuation. As time went by, the feelings she had expected to die, grew stronger and stronger. She felt a slight pang in her chest. The fact that she couldn't have him hurt more than she expected it to. She wanted him to kiss her. She wanted him to hold her tight in his arms. She wanted to forget about these feelings. She wished it was easy. She missed him already, the way he talked, the way he laughed. She couldn't believe that she was obsessed with him this much. A strange sadness began to overwhelm her when she thought about the words he said to her. She had fantasized Oliver saying those exact same words to her. After a while, her eyelids became heavy and she felt herself falling asleep.
