Chapter 24 - DILEMMA

In Daisy's 26 years of living, she had never once imagined herself being face to face with a hideous monster. She didn't believe in ghosts, monsters or supernatural creatures, but this had changed her mind instantly. Her breathing was haggard and shaky as she bolted through the quiet streets. Daisy's eyes darted around her surroundings, in search of a safe place where she could hide. The monsters footsteps grew louder as it drew closer to her. Daisy's calf and thighs felt like they were on fire as she ran. Her speed was reducing drastically as she was reaching her limit. The creature's high pitched shriek pierced through the air, alerting daisy that it was right behind her. She thought about calling for help but soon realized how idiotic and unnecessary that would be. 'Damn it, why do I live in a lonely neighbourhood' Daisy thought as she cursed under her breath. Some seconds had passed when she spotted a thin corner in between two buildings. Daisy changed her direction swiftly and headed towards the spot she had found. She could the heat radiating from the creature's body as she hastily slipped into the tight corner. The monster slammed it's body onto the wall, in its futile attempt to fit into the tight corner. 'It shouldn't be able to come in he-' her thoughts were interrupted when the creature stuck it's long, lanky hands into the tight corner. Daisy didn't have enough time to react. The creature's Sharp finger tips grazed Daisy slightly on her eyebrow. She moved back quickly before it could get a hold of her. The monster flailed it's arms around desperate to grab her. Without giving the creature another glance, Daisy slipped out of the corner through the other side and ran as fast as her weak legs could carry her.

"Where the hell am I?" Daisy said in between her breath as she looked around her.

She slowed down her pace until she came to a halt. Daisy placed both hands on her knees as he tried to catch her breath. Her heart was pounding so hard, she could feel it resonate through her chest. Blood trickled from her forehead, down to the ground. Daisy ran a hand through her eyebrow and flinched at the sharp pain she felt.

"That stupid monster." Daisy said as she spewed more curses at the creature.

A familiar high pitched shriek made daisy to twitch. She made a sharp turn to her back and saw the creature running towards her. 'What the fuck? Just how persistent is this fucker?' She thought. In a blink of an eye, daisy bolted down the street. 'I can't keep running forever. I need to do something.' Daisy sighted a construction site in the distance. She ran towards it with full speed. The monster was gaining momentum and getting closer to her. She could hear it growl in the distance. On reaching the construction site, daisy reached out and grabbed an iron rod on the floor. "Whoaaaaaa." Daisy said as she stumbled back a little.

She had underestimated how heavy the iron rod was. 'This is just the perfect weight I need' She thought. Balancing the iron rod on both hands, daisy turned towards the direction of the monster. She could see it in the distance, running towards her. It's Sharp teeth was bare as it screamed at her. Daisy let out a heavy breath.

"Okay, let's do this." She said.

Daisy ran towards the monster with the iron rod in both hands. The monster let out a loud cry as daisy slammed the iron rod into its chest. It fell to the ground, with Daisy on top of it. The monster reached out and grabbed Daisy's neck, squeezing it hard. Daisy could feel herself loosing strength as the monster tightened his grip on her neck. Mustering the only strength she had left, daisy applied pressure on the iron rod, pushing it further down into its chest. The rod impaled it's chest causing the monster to cry out in pain. It's grip on daisy's neck loosened and she could finally breath. Her eyes grew wider as the monster's body began to turn into ashes.

"J….e...y."

Daisy stared at the monster's eyeless face.

"Did you just….. Talk?" She said in awe.

The creature mouthed an inaudible word and disappeared into a cloud of black smoke. The rod fell to the ground, making a loud clanking noise. Daisy was crouched on the ground, staring blankly at the sandy road.

"This has to be a dream." She said.

Daisy got to her feet and fell back down to the ground. She had been running on pure adrenaline and didn't realize how tired how body was. 'Damn it.'

"Hey lover boy, never thought I'd see you on the job." Daisy said.

She stood in front of her apartment complex, surrounded by patrol cars and cops. Maria looked at Oliver. He had a concerned look on his face.

"I didn't think our next meeting would be like this daisy." Oliver said.

'Seems like they know each other.' Maria thought. "Yeah, me neither. How are ya?"

"I'm okay. How's um, Kenna doing?"

daisy let out a chuckle.

"You're still concerned about that bitch, after what she did?"

Oliver rubbed the back of his neck. Daisy sighed. "Well, Kenna never contacted me after I punched her in the nose that night. I didn't expect her to."

"You punched her in the nose?" Oliver said, blinking his eyes at her.

Daisy shrugged.

"She had it coming, ain't my fault. Enough about her, who's the pretty little girl beside you, is she your new girlfriend?"

Maria flinched at the sound of girlfriend.

"Oh no no no, definitely not. This is Maria, my partner and coworker. Maria this is Daisy. She was my ex girlfriend's best friend."

Maria shook hands with Daisy who was flashing her a bright smile. Maria knew her and Oliver weren't an item but it hurt more when she heard him say it out loud.

"Your eyebrow, you need to get that treated or it'll get infected." Maria said as she pointed at the slash mark across Daisy's eyebrow.

"Oh, this little thing. It's not bleeding anymore and it doesn't hurt that much, so it'll be fine."

Oliver ran a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated at the situation at hand.

"Daisy, we're taking you in as a suspect for questioning."

Daisy sighed. She knew it was coming. When she walked back to the apartment complex and saw her father's dead body on the ground, she didn't know what to do. Calling 911 was her only option. She scratched her head and looked up at Oliver.

"Can I tell you something very bizzare?"

Oliver nodded.

"What if I say my father was attacked by a monster and this said monster happen to chase me, but I ended up killing it. Sounds crazy right?"

Maria adjusted her skirt nervously.

"Yes, that sounds very implausible and I'm tired of hearing about this monster. Is everyone on drugs nowadays or something?"

Daisy's eyes lit up.

"You've heard about a monster before?"

Oliver and Maria exchange a look. Oliver sighed. He didn't want to do this to Daisy.

"I can't answer that question. Now you're coming with us." Daisy nodded and they all walked to a patrol car.

"Thanks." Daisy said to the petite brunette as she placed a cup of tea down on the table.

She flashed Oliver a smile before strolling out of the questioning room.

"Damn, she definitely has the hots for you." Daisy said, giving him a smirk.

"Look Daisy, this is my job so I would like it if we can keep things strictly business." Oliver said in a firm tone.

"Dang, you just had to be a mood killer. You think I don't know that?" Oliver clasped his hands on the table and looked straight at Daisy.

"You live in that apartment complex, correct?"

Daisy nodded.

"What were you doing before the murder occurred?"

"I just got home from work, I took a shower and headed outside for a smoke."

"What happened after that?"

Daisy sighed.

"The man approached me and tried to attack me, but then the monster….."

Oliver let out a groan. The word 'monster' had become very irksome to his ears. Maria walked into the room and handed Oliver some papers.

"Thanks." Oliver said as he smiled at her.

She nodded and walked out of the room. Oliver went through the documents thoroughly. He eyes lit up as he read through it.

" Daisy Cromwell, Your mother left when you were still very young and you had to deal with your abusive father's antics everyday. Including sexual harassment." Daisy flinched as sweat dripped down her face. "Apparently you left home when you were still very young and started a life on your own. You forwarded your education all by yourself. You couldn't get a job with your degree, so you settled for a job at a café." Oliver looked up at daisy who was staring at her tea with a solemn expression. Daisy was the strong type who wouldn't falter when words were thrown at her. Seeing her like this, bothered Oliver. 'Maybe I pushed to hard' he thought.

"Daisy, I'm sorry you had to go through all of this." Daisy looked up and saw Oliver, giving her a very concerned expression. Daisy sighed and straightened herself on the chair.

"That night, it was my father who approached me. He was urging me to give him money, but I refused. He was about to attack me when that, hideous creature killed him."

"But from the documents I have here, it seems like you would have a good reason to kill him."

"I know how it looks, but I swear, I didn't kill him. You have to believe me."

Oliver sighed and rubbed his temples.

"I want to believe you too daisy. Luckily no murder weapon was found, so there is no evidence against you. Until we can gather enough evidence, you will be under surveillance."

Daisy let out a sigh of relief. She didn't want to go to jail for her father's death.

"You haven't touched your tea."

Daisy looked down at the cup of tea in front of her. "Oh, this. I'm not a tea person. I prefer soda, lemon soda to be precise."

"Alright I'll tell someone to get that for you." Oliver said and walked out of the questioning room.

Daisy slumped back on the chair, her nerves finally relaxing. No matter how tough she was, the police questioning was able to crack her nerves. 'I just hope everything's going to be fine.' She thought.

Is someone calling my name? It's faint….I can't hear it clearly….Who is that?

"Maria!"

Her eyes shot open. She could see Oliver in front of her. Her heart was beating fast and her body was filled with sweat.

"Oliver? What are you doing here?" Maria asked as she sat up slowly on the bed.

"I heard you scream so I rushed in here to check up on you."

'Another nightmare.'

"I see, thanks."

"Was it a nightmare?" Oliver said as he gave her a worried look.

Maria nodded.

" I have frequent nightmares too."

"Really? About what? I'm curious."

Oliver chuckled.

"Sure, I'll tell you, if you tell me about yours."

"Deal."

Oliver smiled and began explaining his nightmares to her while making hand gestures. They talked for what felt like hours until Maria let out a yawn.

"You're sleepy?" she nodded sluggishly.

"Alright I'll let you sleep now."

Oliver stood up from the bed slowly. Maria caught the hem of his cloth, restricting him from moving. He looked at her with a puzzled look on his face.

"What's the matter?"

Maria blinked her eyes. She looked deep in thought. "Oh, it's nothing important. Good night." Maria said as she released his clothing from her hold.

"Good night." Oliver replied and walked out of her room. 'What the hell was I thinking? There is no way I can ask him to sleep on the bed with me' Maria flushed at the thought of that. She threw the covers over her and fell into a deep sleep.
