Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Kristen Stone was already 23 years old. She just finally finished her degree and was about to have her first job interview. The job was going to be some menial, coffee-fetching, administrative gig, but at least she would get some experience. Also, she had heard that the CEO was really handsome. Not that she had ever been the type to go for someone just because they were handsome.

Kristen's prior relationship had lasted 6 months and she thought that he was the one that she was going to marry. Levi had been in a few of her business classes when they started dating. They had considered moving out of the campus dorms and into a house together. At least, until she had seriously caught him eyeing other women.

She thought that it was just innocent staring. His eyes would linger a little too long on the waitress's cleavage. He would watch the woman in the short skirt from the back of the class walk down the aisle to chat with the professor. Looking her legs up and down and licking his lips when he thought she didn't notice. When she finally confronted Levi, he dumped her. He said one girl wasn't enough for him and that he was too young to be tied down.

If she had been more honest with herself she would have been able to feel the relief deep inside her. However, all she felt at the surface was rejection. She decided that love needed to be put aside for now. She had to be career focused.

She looked down at her watch and saw that it was still early for her interview. She had about an hour before she had to be at the headquarters building, so she decided to look up coffee places nearby. Kristen found one very close to the subway station around the corner and started walking in that direction. She had her eyes focused on her phone as she accidentally bumped into a very tall man.

"Oh my goodness! I am so sorry!" She exclaimed. She had nearly fallen over and her phone dropped to the ground. The man was bundled against the cold wearing a light brown long coat. His crimson scarf covered most of his face and soft blonde hair poked out under a cap that matched his coat. He looked down at her phone and went to grab it for her. Unfortunately, Kristen had the same idea.

"Oof!" The man muttered.

"Ouch! Are you ok?" Kristen laughed as she rubbed her head. She wasn't usually this clumsy. She squinted her eyes against the morning sun and saw that the man was laughing too. He opened his eyes and they were the most peculiar shade of violet.

"I'll be alright." He chuckled, "Where are you headed in such a hurry?" He asked, he seemed rather interested.

"I was just on my way to the coffee shop around the corner." She explained. She looked back up toward his face briefly, and then quickly toward the ground hoping that he wouldn't notice that she was blushing.

"Good luck with that." He stated jokingly and began to walk away.

Kristen felt slightly disappointed that the man was already leaving. She had hoped that he might join her for coffee and help her take her mind off the interview. She really enjoyed meeting new people, but it seemed as if he had somewhere to be. She watched him for a moment, but then she shrugged and bent back down to grab her phone.

She walked to the cafe and ordered a latte. She sat in the window and watched as passersby hurried around the crowded city streets. She was glad that she lived outside the city, but she figured the commute would be an inconvenience later. After a while she checked her phone for the time and decided to make her way back to the headquarters building.

She paused briefly as she approached the gargantuan tower. Looking up she figured there had to be at least 70 floors in this skyscraper. Kristen took a deep breath of cold air and looked down at her outfit. Her black petticoat was covering her simple tan dress, but she could see that her old black heels were starting to visibly fade. She needed to buy a new pair as soon as possible to keep up her image.

Shaking her head, she stood tall and walked toward the two giant glass doors. She pulled on the heavy door just as a strong gust of wind attempted to keep it closed. She saw a handsome security guard rush over to help her from inside. The two of them pulled and pushed the door open together and she made it into the lobby with windswept hair.

"Thank you so much!" She said. The security man nodded and smiled before returning to his post. She walked up to the front desk, attempting to battle her hair back into place as she walked and explained that she had an appointment to the receptionist.

The woman looked Kristen up and down slowly and methodically. Calculating a cool reply. "Your appointment was two hours ago." She rolled her eyes as she spoke.
