Vera was beginning to lose hope that Casey would ever come back when she got the call from the hospital that he was lucid. She immediately dropped what she was working on and rushed over there, hoping to see him and actually talk to him for the first time in nearly a year only to find Kane.
It was obviously him. He was holding himself confidently, almost defiantly. The bangs weren't an issue anymore since the hospital staff had been keeping Casey's hair short because it was easier to care for but the way he stood was all Kane.
For a moment she experienced crushing disappointment. Then she realized this could be a good thing. She knew she needed Kane in order to save Casey.
Unfortunately, trying to get anything out of him was like trying to get a brick wall to talk at first. He didn't think she was actually there to help him. It took quite a bit of convincing and getting rather heated for him to accept her help.
