Vera could still remember the horror she felt when she realized that Casey and Kane weren't twins. All of the misery as the implications of what he must have gone through hit her, even before she got the details that came out during the course of the trial. The heartbreak that came with how casual Kane was about what they had been through.
Every horrible thing that brought them to this point when he was finally, FINALLY free of his greatest trauma. It had all been worth it to have any time with him happy at all but this…this was so much more.
Casey rubbed her back as she sobbed into his shoulder. "I know," he said quietly. "I know."
He didn't though. Not fully because she hadn't wanted to complain and make him feel worse than he already did. He didn't know the full extent of how excruciatingly hard it had been to deal with Kane so often when she only wanted Casey back in the mental hospital.
