Kane didn't know what to do or even what to think about any of this. He was lost in his fractured thoughts until Vera began to stir.
"Vera!" he croaked desperately, squeezing her hand.
"Casey?" she asked groggily before she realized he was awake and her eyes filled with tears. "Oh, Casey! I was so worried about you! The doctors said you would wake up but I was so scared."
She hadn't realized he wasn't Casey yet. Probably because of his panic. He was acting like Casey unintentionally. She wouldn't be happy if she discovered the truth by accident later so he needed to be honest.
"I'm Kane."
"Right," Vera said. "That makes sense. I know you're a protector by nature but how could you do something so crazy? You could have died. You overtaxed basically everything and nearly bled out yourself in the process. You needed a blood transfusion and then wouldn't wake up. Obviously, I'm thankful you saved me but—"
"I didn't," Kane interrupted.
