Casey heard someone talking to him but it took a moment for him to realize what was going on. Vera was sitting on the edge of the bed and talking about how the owner of Heron's was testing new recipes and having all of the employees and other people who worked in the strip mall make sure they passed muster.
She wasn't speaking with her usual levels of enthusiasm but she still laughed when she talked about how one of the girls who worked at the ice cream shop shed a bucket of tears because no one warned her how spicy it was and she had to go get a spoonful of ice cream to cool her tongue off. That laugh made his insides twist.
Vera. She was here, talking to him like she always did…but he hadn't been here until about ten seconds ago.
Had she been talking to Kane? But why was she treating him in such a friendly way after what he did to her specifically? This didn't make any sense!
