Jenna ended up sleeping until nearly noon because the first time she woke up she had a headache from crying too much. Her eyes were still a bit puffy but with any luck that would go down before it was time to go to dinner. The last thing she needed right now was questions from well-meaning family members.
She made her way downstairs and popped a couple of the toaster waffles she normally kept on hand for Wesley into the toaster before leaning against the counter with a sigh. Where were they? It seemed like she was the only one home right now and that was weird.
She was in the middle of eating her breakfast when they both came through the front door. Wesley was a bit dirty so it looked like he had been at the park nearby. It had a sandbox area that had made a mess of him more than once since moving here.
He turned to her with shining eyes. "Mom, you're awake! We can go to the animal shelter now!"
