Chapter 1 - Among the Smoke

It was hot. I couldn't breathe. It was so dark yet I can still remember the flicker of amber cast through the space underneath my door. All of a sudden I woke up to the sensation of choking.

Smoke quickly filled my room. I jumped from my bed and ran straight to the door but it wouldn't budge.

I reached for my chair and tried to break the door down however it was in vain as I was not strong enough. None of this made sense! What was happening? The more I tried to think, the more clouded my mind had gotten. I could feel myself suddenly get tired. I tried calling out to my family but all I could hear in return was the sound of crackling wood from my house. I knew it was going to come down any minute.

I suddenly heard my mother and father. They were screaming. My heart felt like it was going to explode. Then I could hear my little sister and brother. Their cries for help ricocheted through my body. I couldn't fight my tears as I banged on my bedroom door in every attempt to get it to open. I knew I couldn't stay there but I had to save my family.

Suddenly I saw red and blue flashing lights fill my room. A man proceeded to break my window and usher me outside. I stood frozen. I didn't want to leave my family in there. He climbed inside and grabbed my arm as he lifted me out through the window.

It was there that I saw firemen and police surrounding my house that was now almost entirely ablaze. I could only recognise a few of my neighbours standing by. As they sat me down near one of the trucks, the screaming from my house became more apparent. I got up and ran as fast as I could toward my house but I was restrained by a group of people.

Then all at once, my house and everything in it collapsed. My home engulfed in flames. The smoke filled the street and all that was left to hear was the sound of a dying flame. In a second, I had lost what was worth a lifetime. Then the rain rolled in and I felt myself collapse into the arms of a stranger. Once again, it had gone dark.
