"We're ready," Wes told my Abuelo when the silence grew too thick. "we should get started while she's still capable of taking it. The window is small."

"I'm aware of that, Wes," August said coldly, never looking away. "Go ahead."

I panicked for a second, struggling against the restraints that kept me down.

"Don't fight, honey," the nurse warned.

"It's okay, it's okay. No one's going to hurt you," the OB soothed, holding my left arm down for the tech as my grandfather moved away. Whatever they were about to do, he couldn't do it himself.

"Get the oxygen back on her," Wes ordered, handing the tech something in a plastic container. "Don't break it, we don't have another."

"I won't," the tech scowled as he opened the packaging to reveal a thick gold-colored needle. "Make sure she stays still. I'm going to need a deeper vein for this to work. The upper veins burst too easily."
