Crawling out of bed, I crept to the door to see if anyone was still awake.

It was 2 AM by the clock on the wall, and everything seemed quiet. Still, I made sure my uncle wasn't still up. Sometimes, he stayed in his office until late, but it appeared he'd called it early tonight. He's seemed more stressed since he returned from his trip, and I think it's because of me. He's made a lot of calls to people I don't know, but he refused to share anything except for the conversation we'd had this afternoon. 

I returned to my room with relief, grabbing the hidden bags I'd stuck in my toy box. Unlike other children, I knew how to survive in the wild. That was something my dad made sure I knew how to do. He'd take me out into the mountains a few times a year, and we'd live off what we could hunt. Now that my wolf was awake, those instincts felt stronger, and I knew I could take care of us.
