I stood staring at the front door as if I had just seen a ghost. It wasn't till Kyle collapsed that I ran over to him, grabbing his hand and forcing my powers into him. The color to his cheeks came back, rosy red like they look after he has a good feed. He looked healthier, healthier than he had in a long time.
Ella gasped and looked at me surprised, and then Kiah grabbed the same hand that was holding onto Kyle. We all jumped back from each other like we'd been shocked. I could now feel their powers inside me.
"Ella come here, I want to see if I can lend you some too," I said quietly as she moved towards me. "It doesn't hurt I promise."
She put both of her hands out for me to hold and I held onto them giving her some of my powers. Kyle and Kiah came up behind me and put their hand on either side of my shoulder. We all felt a new link holding us together.
We all let go of each other, dumbfounded, and had no idea how to explain what had just happened. After we let go, the link was still there. We could feel each other's powers.
I laughed breaking the silence, they all just stared at me, "That was some experience. I'm pretty sure only we could have done that. I don't think anyone in the history of supernatural beings has ever had a friendship as strong as we have one. We just made history, and I don't think anyone but the people we kill will know it exists." Relief spread through me as I continued to giggle.
"I have to visit my mother's grave. My dad must have left a clue there for me. I need to follow the clues to find him." I said as I broke the thoughtful silence. "Kiah I'm going to ask you to come with me and these two can stay. We'll be okay we aren't far from the cemetery." I grabbed my coat and headed for the door, Kiah was two steps behind me.
I held out my hand for Kiah to hold as I opened the door and we headed out into the chilly fall night. We walked down the street towards the cemetery, stopping here and there to blend into the shadows as people passed by us, oblivious to our existence.
We made it to the cemetery with no one tailing us, and no one realizing we were there. We walked the dark cemetery grounds towards my mother's grave, but I could feel the restlessness of the spirits. That was something new.
When we got to my family plot, I noticed that someone had recently been there; fresh flowers had been put on my mother's gravestone. Red tulips hold the meaning of 'true love.' My father had been here only recently.
I sighed racing towards the flowers only to realize someone was standing close by. They didn't feel like a threat, but their presence got me to walk instead of run. When I got to the gravestone the person began talking.
"I know you don't know me child, but I am a friend of your father's. I've never picked a side, but I keep many secrets. You were one of these secrets. My name is Katiana, and I am what people call a necromancer. Only a few of us are alive today." She paused and looked at my face that was contorted in confusion, "I'm sure you are wondering why I am here. Spirits talk child, they told me you were coming. Your father left you a message, one I'm sure you will be able to decipher. But, before I give you the message, I was wondering if you would be willing to let me see you in light. I am curious to know if you do look like your mother." She waited patiently for me to answer.
"Of course, you may light your lantern as long as you promise me that it is not to warn anybody that we are here," I replied cautiously.
"Of course child, I promise I am not here to harm you or warn your enemies that you are around." She replied as she lit her lantern and we both gasped.
Kiah looked at us both and cocked an eyebrow towards Katiana, puzzled as to why we looked so much alike.
"As I thought child," She said as she studied my face. "You have your mother's blue eyes and fair skin. You are a bit shorter than she was but you have the same blond hair. Your mother was my sister, and though I do not pick sides, I want you to win child. I've heard what the spirits have said, they told me to give you my powers, as you are my blood it will work. You would be able to call to the spirits. I know you can sense them, I felt them stir when you walked into the cemetery." She continued hastily, "My father was a werewolf, my mother was a necromancer. She was his pack's grave caller, she could call back former pack members' powers and give them equality throughout the pack. My sister Mariana, your mother, was born a werewolf, with necromancer's powers; I was just born a necromancer, not a werewolf gene in me. I am willing to give you my powers, so you can call upon help from the grave if you need to." She took my hand.
Her power flowed into me without hesitation, she gasped but still held on, I looked at her, "I don't want this to kill you. I want to know what my mother was like." I pleaded with my eyes. I wanted to know my mother.
"My child, from what I have heard from your father, she was exactly like you, modest, shy, powerful, but never mean friends in many places and high morals of family. If you wish to know her, begin by knowing who you are." She replied smiling at me.
I could feel her getting weaker by the second, but she wouldn't let go and I could not shake her off.
"No!" I screamed. "I don't want to kill you!" I cried desperately.
When she finally let go it was too late to go back on anything, I cried as I held her, rocking back and forth as she took her last breaths.
"My child, I'm going to help you from the grave. Bury me in the family plot next to my sister, and I will help you whenever you need me," she whispered. "Follow the road to which you traveled alone and unsure, and there you will find us." She finished with her last breath.
Kiah knelt down next to me and tried to take her from my arms, but I couldn't let her go.
"Yelena," Kiah whispered softly into my ear, his voice hoarse like he too had been crying. "I can feel your pain and sorrow. I know why you're crying and why you can't let her go. You need to let her go so we can bury her as she told us to."
I nodded and laid her body softly on the ground next to me, and we walked to the cemetery keepers shed and grabbed two shovels. We walked back to the space next to my mother's grave and started digging.
A few hours later we were done and we buried her, next to her sister. As we smoothed the last of the soil over her new grave I felt a touch of her power. She was trying to comfort me and I smiled down at her.
Kiah held my free hand as we walked back to the shed to put the shovels back, and started walking slowly home. I could feel the spirits more as we walked past graves, they were trying to comfort me. I smiled at all of them as we left the cemetery grounds and started on the short walk home.
Neither one of us talked, we saw no one on the way back to the house. When we got to the house we double-checked the perimeters before vanishing into thin air. Making sure no one was around to see the new magic we had created.
We opened the front door and walked into the house, preparing ourselves for the story that we would have to tell them. We both knew that if Kiah felt my pain, they would have too.
