"What?"

"I said, 'I see a woman, sir'. She seems to be making trouble with the men on that side. I do not think her presence here is for anything good…" Matthew's voice trailed off for a split minute before he said, "Sir."

There was a lot of things Rochester felt following Matthew's outcry of there being a woman outside his gates. Of all the raw emotions Rochester could bring his mind to process at the time, the most dominant was freedom. Freedom! Rochester, like a bird in a cage, could not help feeling a tinge of relief. That woman—whoever she was — Rochester considered her intrusion as perfect timing. Her sudden arrival had forged the leeway he needed to rid of the shackles that was Louisa.
