Chapter 9 - Was she pretty?

"The rent didn't came in again" Rubben frowned rubbing the tip of his nose.

"Was she pretty?" Serene utters focusing on the road while Rubben sighed irritatedly at Serene's questions.

"That woman! Was she pretty? California?" She gingered not minding Rubben's irritating look.

"It's not like that" Rubben rebutted.

"Maybe she had a rocking body. What did she do to you that you didn't even notice your watch is gone?" Serene glared at him surreptitiously.

"Don't talk nonsense! Just drive properly." Rubben scowl.

"Based on your personality, you wouldn't have just put it around her wrist unless you went crazy" Serene watched him from the corner of her eyes with disdain.

Rubben mind flashed back the time when he wrap his watch around her wrists. He heaves a silent breath and pulled himself together.

"Officer, I'm here to see Hol Kamil. Can I meet him?" Jisonia asked.

"He's not here today. Did you call him before coming?" The Officer inquired. "No, I don't have his number" Jisonia answered back.

"You can leave your number or come back tomorrow" The Officer said. "Wait! Another Officer step in."

"This is his address. After the director passed, he couldn't eat and sleep. At this point, he might die also." The Officer handed a piece of paper.

"Thank you" Jisonia said with a small smile.

"How can you just give his address? Detective". The Officer grumbled after Jisonia left. "Don't you know? Detective took the photo frame that was placed in Kamil table before".

"Is she his girlfriend?" Officer asked when he saw the photo.

"I don't know, he told me that they are like a family". Detective replied.

Jiosonia grabbed her phone to Google the location, and in her process of doing that, she trailed off the sidewalk again and walked on the road. She jerked when she heard a car honk at her, making her phone fall of her hands. She picked up her phone and waved her hand to apologize to the driver, with a slight bow.

Rubben who was sitting at the back seat of his car, was closely observing the petite lady outside the car. His eyes were glued to the lady as she picked up her phone and bowed slightly to apologize, with her hands waving at them.

"What happened?" Serene asked.

"Nothing! I think I started seeing her." Rubben rubbed his eyes composing himself. "Do you think the woman came back to our country?" Rubben asked hastily with doubtful eyes.

"No way! The best kind of running away is abroad." Serene replied.

"Are you really okay?" Serene asked while Rubben nodded his head in response. "I told you to get an IV while you were at the hospital. It doesn't cost that much." Serene furrowed her brows as she said with concern.

"I didn't get it because I didn't need it. You think I didn't get it because of the money" Rubben intensed his gaze on Serene.

"No!" Serene replied faking a smile. I guess...when you blow away a watch worth hundreds of dollars, you do need to save as much as possible. Serene added flatly.

"Gosh! Why did you keep bringing it up? Even if I have to follow her to the ends of the earth I will find her". Rubben said angrily, his eyes staring lasers at her.

Jisonia slowly walked to the porch and pressed on the doorbell. She knocked and rang the door when she got no response.

The irritating sound of the doorbell made Kamil grumble. He rubbed his bleary eyes in an attempt to rid himself of drowsiness and grumpily walked to open the door with a deep frown across his face but was immediately stupefied when he saw who it was at the door.

"Jisonia, How did you came here?" Kamil asked in shocked.

"The police station told me. Can I come in?" Jisonia asked. "Of course, you can come in" Kamil opened the door widely and guided her inside.

"This! I found in our door." Jisonia placed a paper in his hands.

"Pay your rent if ...." Kamil read halfway and scribbled it. "Crazy guy!" He cursed.

"What is that?" Jisonia asked.

"Nothing! There's a pshyco...I mean the landlord downstairs looks like he has serious psychological issues." Kamil replied.

Jisonia took a seat and placed an envelope in the table. "My dad always said he doesn't want condolences money. Thanks for staying with me and mourning with me". Jisonia said earnestly.

"Uncle was not just a sponsor of my children's home but a father to me Or was I just being presumptuous all by myself?" Kamil eyes flashed with emotions.

"My dad would've been very happy to hear this from you. You know! He thought of you as his own son and my own brother." Jisonia said appreciatively as she held Kamil's hand.

"That's is more painful. I've always known that I loved and respected him but I never once said them loud. I should've hugged him or at least held his hands." Kamil eyes beamed up with tears.

"Before he passed away, he told me to visit me but I didn't make time for him. I don't deserve to be human." Kamil wipped off his tears.

"We don't openly express our feelings to our family. We just assumed that they'll understand us. I am aware that father will understand your feelings and he was always proud of you". Jisonia said in small voice, comforting him.

"Hey! What are you doing? Shouldn't I be comforting you instead" Kamil sighed.
