The cake and present were back at Rosalind's foster home because they had nowhere to put it during the ceremony. They would be having a small party for Julian at a nearby park using one of the picnic tables once they picked those up.
When it was his turn to have his name called and walk across the stage, they both stood up and cheered for him. As soon as they sat back down, she was hit by the rather depressing thought that he hadn't bothered to participate the first time he graduated because there was no one to attend and cheer him on. She had been there when he discussed his plans for graduation with Izzy and she talked him out of it.
Her father led a rather depressing life before he met her mother. So had she, honestly. Maybe that was part of why they worked so well together. They understood each other's pain to an extent.
