Chapter 13 - The Forest 2

"Mhm, looks quite good"

Not long after finding the river, I began setting up a camp, the sun was going to set and I need at least a fire.

Luckily I'm in a forest now, and finding wood wasn't a problem, after collecting enough long branches I began to work in creations a small tent with a bed.

For the tent I used three long branches and placed them like the shape of the top part of a kite, and reinforced the base with stones, then added a single long and thicker branch for support on the opposite side, with a Y end to firmly hold the other three.

After the foundation was done, I placed some other branches that still has its leave's against the kite head framework creating a wall to finish my tent.

For the bed I cut 4 branches with a Y end again and stabbed in the ground making a rectangular form, the Y side about a foot high from the ground, then placed two strong branches parallel from each other in the rectangular long side and finish it by placing small branches on top of the other two, creating a bed, taking less that 2 hours to finish everything.

Now comes the hard work, the campfire, I never have done one but I have seen many survival and history videos on TV to at least know the basic.

First I need to clear the ground of any dry leave's or branches, the least I need is to cause a forest fire.

Grabbing a few stones and placing them in a circular shape around the small clearing for extra protection, then I grabbed a few small dry branches and placed them against each other, leaving a small airway for the kindle, this was called teepee, and after placing a few bigger branches against each other on top off the smaller ones it was completed.

For the fire…. Well I don't have a lighter, nor a magnifying glass, I guess I have to use the old bow drill method, never done it but shouldn't be hard.

For the bow I grabbed a arm length curved branch, strong enough for me to be rough with it as I moved to create heat, then for the string I peeled some bark off a tree and cut the small fiber inside into thin long strips and after soaking in water for a bit I twisted them together making a thing but strong rope which I tied to both ends of the curve branch, leaving it a bit loose for the stick latter.

For the spin and the bottom wood I cut a branch into two small sticks, around 1 foot long.

For the spinning I sharpen one end where I would put pressure leaving the other end flat for the friction, in the middle I made a small depression where the rope would go, making sure it won't move around.

For the other piece, I cut it in half and used the dagger to make a hole where're the embers would be created as well as a triangular cut next to the hole.

Then I just grabbed a small wood piece and made a small hole in the center, it would be the piece to use for pressure and the easy part was done, now came the hard one, the fire.

Placing the flat piece on the ground and stabilizing it with my foot, I place the other one on the bow, making a twist on the middle, the sharp end upward and pressed the flat one in the hole of the plank in the ground, and used the last small piece of wood to apply pressure.

For the tinder I used some fallen dry leaves, I pile them together with a small depression in the middle where the ambers will go and with that I was ready.

After placing the bow on the hole I began to move my arm back and forth continuously to create friction, slowly the bottom wood became slightly burned and a black powder began accumulating on the side where the tinder was, a thin line of smoke began raising.

Before I knew I had been doing it for over 15 min, my arms were beginning to hurt from the back and forth movement but I'm a guy so I'm already used to anyways.

When I notice the black powder was big enough and a small orange embers where mix in I moved the wood plank and bow away and grabbed the tinder, slowly blowing it as I tried to make the embers stronger, and in least than 30 seconds, flames began raising from the dry leaves.

Quickly I put the burning tinder under the teepee, and kept feeding dry leaves and air, trying to keep the fire alive.

And after a good 5 minutes battle I had a stable fire camp to keep me warm.

"God that was exhausting".

Siting on the ground, tired after making the fire for over 20 minutes, drops of sweat were visible on my forehead.

"Mmmm, just in time, is getting dark"

Looking a the the sky, now covered in a mix of orange and yellow as the sun settled on the horizon, hiding itself behind the trees.

"If there is anything positive about this place are the sights I have seen"

"What to do now"

He was planing on boiling some water to increase his reserves before going to hunt, but setting up camp had taken him more time that expected.

"Well I guess nothing can be done abou-"

"SCREEEESSHHH"

A sudden cry disrupted his train of thoughts.

immediately remembering about his early fight, with a creature that made the same sound, Alex ran picked up his sword and took one dagger out, standing in the same stance as his last fight, looking at the bushes for any surprise attack.

Then, after waiting for a few seconds, Alex saw his enemy stepping a out of the bushes, it was another imp, the same as the one he had killed earlier, so similar that I'd put together Alex won't be able to tell them apart.

"Another one, is this part of the forest their territory something?"

He don't remember finding any when he entered the forest, so maybe the Inter part was their territory.

"Well it doesn't matter now, I will use the same strategy and kil-"

Thinking about how to dispose of it, Alex was about to be began his assault when out of no where another one appeared, from the first Imp right side.

"Another one, this will be annoying"

But as he thought about the difficulty, another imp appeared, then another, and another one.

Alex widen his eyes in surprise, his jaw was slightly opened as he could believe what he was looking at.

One by one small imps appeared, the sheer number was mind numbing, in just a few second there were more that the eyed could count, dozens of them now stood in front of him, cornering him between the river and them, leaving no escape.

"RROOOAAARRR"

Just as Alex observed the small horde of imps, a sudden roar made him break eye contact with the horde and look at the trees behind them.

"There is something else coming!?"

Can this get any worse?

Then steadily a figure began appearing from the trees, it's hide was of a pale yellow, his ears short, almost similar to those of a pig, and in his mouth two sets of fangs could be visible even if it was closed.

But the most shocking was it's size, easily passing the 2 matter mark, making it more intimidating, he was holding a club in his right hand, probably from a tree branch he ripped, it's eyes were red, filled with pure hatred and anger, looked at Alex, never moving away from his body.

Cold sweat began to appear on Alex forehead as he stared at the horde of imps and the beast behind them.

Clenching his jaw, Alex gripped the handle of his sword harder, and pointed at the horde.

"I may not make it out of this alive"

"RRROOOOOOAAAAAARRRRR"

"HHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAHHHH"

With a single war cry from both sides, the battle began.
