Chereads / A changeling odissey / Chapter 5 - Finally awake

Chapter 5 - Finally awake

In a dimly lit and damp cave there's an egg resting on a carpet of dark colored fur…

*Crick*...*Crick*

Ohhh, it's hatching…

*CRACK*

*GAAASP*

And thus a little creature of about 1 meter broke out from the egg.

This little… thing? It's very hard to find the words to describe it… it doesn't look like anything at all.

It has the body of a humanoid but the rest is literally blank, almost like one of those mannequins you can find in clothing stores.

1st person POV

Checking my body better, I notice that everything about me is milky white even my face. Touching it better it feels smooth, like a marble sphere and without anything else to touch, no eyes, ears, nose….

Then how can I see these cave walls… cave walls? HOW CAN I BE IN A CAVE??!!

What is happening *sob* *sob*

One leg at a time… one out, now for the other… uuoooohhhh I'm losing my baAaAalance *THUD*

[You have slain a Black Squirrel(LV2)]

[You have slain a Black Squirrel(LV2)]

How?

I didn't even see where the squirrel was supposed to be.

I didn't even move from my egg. How could I kill it?

Feeling something soft under myself I swiftly check under the egg, and there it is, a squirrel with his head flattened and blood oozing out of its nose and eyes.

Ignoring the voice that sounded a moment ago I just inspected the poor animal.

[??? ???]

Let's try to close it and reopen it without screaming.

The window disappeared

And reappeared.

Ok, so I don't have to embarrass myself every time I want to look at the system. Now let's examine those tabs…

Name: Unnamed

Level: 1/?

Race: Changeling(mutant) tier:null

Class: none

What do all these question marks mean? And why am I a mutant?

[Changeling: A race of human-looking creatures born from the union of a doppelganger and humanoid creatures. They have the peculiarity of being white from head to toes, even their internal organs and blood are white. Experts in the art of hiding their true selves by changing in appearance, however they are limited by their own body proportions.]

Mmmmhhh… interesting.

[Because you are a mutant.]

<*mumble* I could have reached that conclusion alone. What I meant to ask is: Why did my mutation remove bodily features from me?>

[Because you are the son of |classified information|, a slimefolk and |classified information|, a doppelganger.

As such your true form doesn't have a base on which to shape itself except the basic humanoid outline.]

I see, I see.It seems like I became even more plain than in my previous life! At the very least before I had a face *sob sob*.

*slap*

This is not the time to feel sorry for myself!

First let's continue to explore the system…

[Class: the path that a creature chooses for himself, once a class is chosen you can't change it for your whole life.

The classes are also ruled by tiers and can advance once the right conditions are met, one of the most common advancement paths is: apprentice swordsman→novice swordsman→swordsman→elite swordsman→expert swordsman→etc…]

[Classes can be unlocked by reaching a certain level and choosing one of the options given by the system or also by finding an instructor to teach you about the class you wish to choose and help you reach the conditions needed to gain said class]

[Tier: a standard unit of measurement issued by the System itself, as such it can never be wrong.]

[No, tiers aren't absolute as they do not take in consideration external factors, like previous injuries, or personal combat abilities.

Example: if two normal goblins fight but one of them has a class the one with a class will most likely win, as it knows more ways to defeat his opponent.]

So, to simplify it, tiers are everything and nothing. I could be a tier 3 but lose to a tier 1 if he found me on my deathbed.

Let's just hope I'm not so weak as to die straight away once I exit this cave…
