Chapter 1 - The King is Dead

"No" he said in a whisper as he sat up in the four poster bed in the middle of the dark room. His long dark raven hair fell to his face. The young man threw the covers away and ran his hands threw his hair. The pain racked his entire body until he shook. It was all consuming and unbearable. Father...

He hasn't spoken to his father in years since his father declared his younger brother as crown prince. "Tristan you have no interest in being king. You defy me every chance you get. Your brother has built relationships and forged new alliances. You wallow in this darkness that consumes you. I hoped the oracle was wrong about you. Leave here. Do not return unless I call you.

The pain brought him back from his thoughts. So much pain. He could feel it all. His brother's pain. Tristan stood up but the pain was crippling. It took everything in him not to fall to the floor. He felt Evon reaching for him.

"Brother... help. We've been betrayed. Everyone is dead."

Tristan felt his younger brother's agony and regret. Evon's essence was slipping away slowly. "I can't save Father."

The reality of those words hit Tristan. All the family he has left in this world is dying. He has to act.

Tristan walked to the glass doors that lead to the balcony. As he walked, a dark mist began filling the room, creeping and swirling around the oversized poster bed as if it had a life of it's own. The sky outside of the large glass panes filled with huge black clouds as the sky started to rumble. The deep rumbling shook the room. Lightning streaked through the black clouds, lighting up the sky every couple of seconds. Tristan face was filled with anguish. Rage and grief began consuming him. His eyes mirrored the sky outside his bedroom. The mist began to crawl around Tristan's form, clothing him in his black battle gear.

Tristan reached for his brother's mind, lending his brother his strength. But he knew his brother's life would soon end.

"Who?" Tristan demanded.

"I'm sorry. I should've... Their powerful. They over came the elite guard." Evon said weakly as his breathing slowed. "I see... Mother."

In that moment rain began to pour from the sky as tears fell from Tristan's eyes. "Mother is calling to you he asked?" A moment passed. He knew he had to comfort Evon. "It's okay little one. You did good." Tristan paused. He was so filled with emotion, "Don't keep mother waiting."

Tristan regretted he showed little affection to Evon since his fallout with their father, but now Evon's body began to glow as Tristan poured his love into his brother's mind. Evon smiled weakly and said, "I love you too" as he closed his eyes for the last time.

Mind numbing despair filled Tristan. He couldn't allow himself to grieve now. He immediately began searching for his Father's mind. He could feel his pain but why he couldn't reach his mind. The black mist swirled aound Tristan. Tristan tried to teleport to his Father, but something or someone was stopping him.

"Damn it!!"

His father's pain was overwhelming. He decided to teleport as close to his father as he could. Tristan stepped through the portal on to a road outside of the Capital. The stench of blood was heavy in the air. Evon's guard was decimated. Mangled bodies lay all around him. Even their mounts were slaughtered. Tristan began making his way through the dead soldiers to the royal coach. Who could have done this? This was a massacre. Tristan thought.

He opened the door to the coach and he had to look away. Blood covered the inside of the coach. Evon was in the middle of the carriage with his limbs ripped from his body. Tears fell from Tristan's eyes. " I will make whoever done this pay" He swore.

His Father's convoy shouldn't have been this far out. Tristan summoned top Generals, " The King's convoy is under attack." Portals began opening up around him and soldiers began pouring through.

The Queens guard was the first to arrive. General Auld approached the prince. He began accessing the young man before him and the gruesome sight around him. General Auld served, the late Queen since they children. The sight of Tristan in the middle of this massacre made the old General emotional. He had to fulfill his late Queen and friend's wishes. Protect Tristan at all cost. Even with his life.

Before he approaching the prince, he gave orders to his soldiers. The Queens Elite guard mission is to find the King's convoy and first secure the king. The royal army was to secure the area and look for survivors.

Tristan turned to General Auld who walked to his side,"Find my Father." General Auld stated Yes, My Prince. And joined the his guard in the search.

Tristan walked away from the coach. With every step he took grey mist started pooling around his feet. Tristan wanted to release the dark rage inside of him. The damage he would inflict with the elements would be relentless. He knew his only chance of finding the people responsible was to control himself.

Tristan looked to the sky. He was barely standing because he could still feel his father's agony. Tristan felt his father, the king, was close. Tristan began to focus on his empathic link to his father. The few minutes that passed felt like hours. Tristan felt his father's mind reaching for him. He heard his father

"I will never tell you. Do your worse." Who is he talking to? Tristan thought.

"Where are you? Please father! Let me help you. he pleaded with his father." He could feel, the King, broke his link to him. That's why he couldn't teleport to him. He felt a surge of energy from the king. He began running into the woods off the side of the road where the convoy was ambushed. Tristan's aura was blowing away the tree limbs away as he ran to his father. He could feel his father life force diminishing.

King Ramel stood in the center of his attackers. He took comfort in he dealt this evil alliance a solid blow. He stood tall towering over them. His handsome features bloodied. They tried to break him by killing Evon in front of him. Somehow they knew of the prophesy of the Dark King. He did all he could to protect Tristan from this fate. He would never tell anyone how powerful Tristan is. His power will make him feared and a target. No one knows he isn't fully awakened. Tristan is so much like me the King thought. He can control the elements and magic. It was is in him. The things do on a whim was always terrifying because he was more.

King Ramel looked at the leader of the attackers and smiled, "You will not get what you want from me." Grey mist began swirling around the king. "You want to kill me, "he laughed. "I will not give you my death easy. You will have to earn it!" King Ramel yelled out as he charged toward his foes. Duel blades appeared in his hands as the grey mist swirled aound his entire body.

Moments later arrived in the field to King Ramel. King Ramel turned towards Tristan as he began falling to the ground. Tristan teleported next to his father instantly and caught him. Tristan hands began to glow as he tried to heal the King's wounds, he was too late. His father would not live much longer. He used all his life force fighting his attackers.

King Ramel looked at his son. It was so much he wanted to say. He was out of time. He marked his attackers with an ancient seal only known to the royal family, so Tristan will know is enemy.

King Ramel voice touched Tristan mind. "Soung-che-hi-ranj... remember son. His father used the last of his essence.
