Chereads / Eve of Annihilation / Chapter 50 - Day Z

Chapter 50 - Day Z

As the truck was rumbling down the road from the window I managed to form a better view of how the world is now and what happened on the day of the outbreak.

Alongside the road were destroyed tanks, helicopter pieces and what was left from the airplanes that had fallen from the sky.

Truly an apocalyptic scenery.

According to my speculations, the first outbreak happened with the release of the axis gear which had been modified by that crazy bastard, using that alien technology. But due to that some people acquired supernatural powers. Was that planned or it was just a miscalculation?

I want to know, but currently I have more pressing matters to take care of concerning Hoyo.

In any case, I can clearly see what happened next.

What followed was chaos. People running to save their lives from the horde of zombies that slowly started eating everything alive on their way to infect even more people.

Surely the army tried to do their job, to protect the civilians, after the first infected appeared they became more wary of the situation and that equivalents with more cruelty from their place.

Surely they built fortresses to keep themselves and the other people safe, but as they hadn't any means of knowing which symptoms the infected had before turning into those mindless creatures, they just executed everyone looking like they were sick in any way.

Plus, they probably didn't allow anyone to get inside or go outside of the fortress as they couldn't afford a sudden outbreak from within.

That makes me wonder just how many people died because they couldn't find food, or how many of them were executed because they had caught a normal cold.

Well, looking from the piles of bones and the human remains right and left, I guess there were hundreds if not thousands who died in the fortress we pass from now.

The humongous concrete walls were standing imposingly as the only thing that could protect those people who probably didn't even have the chance to discover what those with the psychic powers could do.

Strangely, I don't feel any sorrow. Instead, I feel envious of those people who managed to survive for so long in that inhospitable place.

But now I'm wondering if that occurrence was worldwide or if it was limited only to our continent, as it's literally in the middle of the ocean. Although I think that probably the problem is worldwide as the axis gear would be very famous for our own conviction.

And with that another question was born. Do the animals also get infected or is it exclusive only to humans?

The axis gear was designed to turn humans into those creatures. But if what's turning us into zombies is a bacteria or a virus, or generally a microorganism then it would be possible for it to mutate in order to infect other species.

But again, that's only a speculation. I don't quite know what caused that infection.

Though I'm pretty sure sooner or later I'll find out.

We were driving for at least three hours and the sun set without arriving at our destination, whichever that may be.

Honestly I still didn't knew where exactly we were heading. I'm sure that it must be their base, but I don't know if it's a fortress like the one we passed previously or it's just an establishment.

Well, whichever it may be I'm fine as long as it has food for me.

Although I have to say that the people who are in the same truck as me were a lot more friendly than I had anticipated.

By looking at them aiming me with guns they don't exactly give you friendly vibes, more like hostile and dangerous.

But hearing the conversations they had, they seemed just like a normal group of friends. They were talking about their daily lives, laughing with random jokes and keeping a smile at all times.

The stars and the full moon were illuminating the night brighter than I had ever seen.

I guess without the light pollution from the city it's a lot clearer to see the stars.

And I must say that it's absolutely beautiful.

While I was gazing at the starry sky I felt a vibration coming from beneath the truck which caused it to be thrown into the air for some seconds before landing on its wheels and continuing it's way.

Suddenly after that everyone stopped talking and the only thing that came out of one of them was the phrase "That damn worm."

So it seems like that worm is more active than I had anticipated.

To be honest I wasn't really afraid of that worm as with my powers I could probably easily kill it, or at least injure it to a great extent, concerning it's size.

But for every normal human like those with me it surely the encounter with it face to face would be a nightmare.

I kept on gazing the sky for a while after that till someone said the phrase I waited to hear all along, "We have arrived."

I tilted my head to the direction the truck was moving and I became blind for a bit as I looked straight to one of the main spotlights that were in front of the gate.

To my great surprise, their base was a mixture of a fortress and an establishment.

It had concrete walls, but a lot lower that those of normal fortresses and iron fences on top of the walls to make up for the lost height.

The gate was also made of iron, enforced with metal scrap and wire mesh to keep any uninvited guest outside.

Although it was clear that it wasn't as good as a fortress as it concerns the sturdiness, it looked like it was good enough for now.

And that's what the people needed. A place to keep themselves safe.

But, I must admit but it still looked fairly intimidating at night.

So let's see what adventures await me behind that gate.
