Chapter 20 - Just another regular day

I woke up in the morning and just like the day before, Hoyo followed me all the time. Shortly after we had breakfast, we went to the school, only to find out what had happened.

In the courtyard there were many students, and when I say many, I mean almost the whole school.

They were standing in the shape of a circle. Both students and teachers.

Hoyo and I were confused as to what was going on.

Then we saw Miko walking towards us.

"S-Shinji, did you hear the news?"

"No, we just arrived. What happened? Why is everyone gathered there?"

Before Miko could answer, I heard the siren of a police car. The car parked in front of the school's gate and two policemen got out and walked straight into the crowd.

I saw them talking to our principal for a while.

I left Hoyo with Miko and went to the others to see what was going on.

With some effort I managed to get out of the crowd and I could see what was going on.

The first thing I saw was a pool of blood that was still fresh. When I moved my head up, I saw the body of a young girl. She was about my age, had brown hair and black eyes. Her eyes were still open and the small breeze was shaking her hair. Her right arm was twisted and there was a small hole on the left side of her head.

The girl was near the building, so at first it looked like she had fallen from the roof of the school. But the keys to the roof are only for the student council. There is no way she could have gotten up there. And the small hole on her head seems to be from a blow to her head with a blunt object.

I am almost certain she did not just fall from up there or commit suicide. Let us see what the cops will do.

Fortunately, I had left Hoyo with Miko. She should never see such a sight in her life.

I left the crowd and walked towards Miko. She still had Hoyo with her.

"Shinji, did you see it?"

"Yes, I did."

"What do you think?"

"What do you mean? It's clearly a murder."

"Huh? What do you mean? Why would anyone want to do something like that?"

"Well, how should I know. But one thing is certain. It is clearly a murder. I mean, there's a lot of evidence."

"What evidence are you talking about?"

"She has a hole on the left side of her head, and besides, only you have the keys to the roof. So there's no way for her to go up on her own."

"Oh, I see. You figured all that out in such a short time?"

"Yeah, I mean, it was obvious. Probably whoever did this did not know how to cover up the crime."

"I see."

"Anyway, let us get out of here. I guess we will not have school today."

I grabbed Hoyo by the shoulders and turned her in the opposite direction of the crowd.

Before we were completely out of the courtyard, I took a quick glance behind me.

I saw the two policemen holding a small plastic bed on which the body covered with a blue blanket was placed.

Just before I could take my eyes off this scene, I saw the girl's left arm peek out of the cover for a moment before one of the policemen put it back on.

We left the place and headed towards my house.

I left Hoyo in the house and asked Miko to follow me to a small park near my house.

We sat down on a bench between two trees. The sun had begun to disappear.

"Shinji, what do you want to tell me?"

"Well, I have a recommendation for you."

"Huh? What is it?"

"So, do you want to help me find out what really happened and who is behind all this?"

"Eh? But we are not cops or detectives. How could we do something like that?"

"Do not worry, it's not that hard. I think it is. Do not you want to justify that girl? I think she was from your class, too."

"Yes, she was. We were not very close, but still... You know you are right. I want to find out the truth. There has to be justice."

"Ha, that's my girl. Good, then let us get started."

"But where should we start?"

"Let us start at the school. We need to find out who might have taken the key from your room."

"Oh, okay."

So we made our way to the school.

Night had fallen and everything was dark.

It was the first time I had ever set foot in the school at that time.

We managed to open the front gate, thanks to Miko who had the keys. I guess being the chairman of the school's disciplinary committee has its advantages.

We were lucky that the security guard had a day off today, so we were free to move around the school grounds.

After we entered the building, we immediately went to the Disciplinary Committee room to see if the keys were still there. It was so dark that we had to turn on the flash of our phones to see anything.

And as expected. The keys were nowhere to be found. Miko was confused because she thought she had locked the door before she left the other day.

"Hmm, let us see if we can find anything on the security cameras," I said, grabbing Miko's hand and hurrying to the security room.

I opened one of the computers there and switched to the surveillance cameras around the room. One outside the room and one inside the room.

Unfortunately, none of the footage showed the perpetrator's face. But at least I could see what clothes the person was wearing. A pair of blue jeans and a black jacket. That was my evidence for the moment.

I tried searching the other cameras in the school, but to no avail. It was like this person knew exactly where all the cameras were. Okay, I mean, it was not that hard to spot them, but still, it was like he had planned this all from the beginning.

That was really suspicious.

Wait, there was one last camera outside the school. With a little luck, it will show something useful.

I focused on the video. Fortunately, it captured the person leaving the school. Unfortunately, the face was not captured, but I could tell from the haircut and the way he was walking that it was a boy.

As he left the school grounds, he got on a motorcycle and rode away. Fortunately, the camera just caught the licence plate number of the vehicle, so I immediately went back to the police database to look for the owner of that motorcycle.

And I found him. But he was not from our school. He was from a school 2-3 kilometres northwest of ours.

But why would he come here just to murder someone? He could just kill them wherever he wanted. Something is not right here.
