Chapter 1 - Aftermath

...p!

...up!

…get…up!

A sharp pain racked through my chest, jolting me up. I clenched my jaw, regretting my decision as my eyes slowly adjusted to the scene before me.

…what?!

The flame coated ruins that lay before me lit up the starless night sky, I coughed violently, sharp pain running from my throat to my chest. My throat was dry but the faint metallic taste in my mouth was amongst my several worries. Ignoring the screaming voice in my head that told me not to, I looked at my left arm from where I felt a dull throb originate.

"…my…my arm!!" My voice came out as nothing more than a hoarse whisper, the pain I thought had dulled, resurfaced as I jerked my shoulder back, completely severing my lower arm from my body. My mind went blank as a head splitting migraine shut off my thoughts. Moving sluggishly, I reached for my left arm, a chill running through my spine as a sticky liquid clung to my bruised fingers.

NO!

I can't die here.

We were supposed to win.

He told us we would win, he said everything would go back to normal if we did...It's supposed to.

Tears ran down my cheeks, the stinging sensation alerting me of multiple bruises. I dropped back to the ground.

Maybe I should just rest a little.

I mean I can't take it anymore.

I just need to sleep and everything will be better.

My eyes slowly opened, the white light right above my eyes blinded me and I jerked forward, shielding myself from it.

Huh? The pain?

I glanced at my body, baffled at the lack of bruises and the fact that my arm was…fine.

"You're up huh? That's good, the girl wouldn't quit nagging me." A man in his mid-fifties with white spiky hair, a man whose face was yet to fade from my memories.

"General! You're alive?!" I asked, my voice going a bit higher than I intended.

"Of course I am you brat." The general smirked, an act that I had only seen once when his fatally wounded body was being carried into the chopper and what I believed were final farewells

"He's awake, you can go see him now." I ran my hand through my hair, one confusing theory after the other seemed to go through my head, all of them clearing as another familiar voice, one I longed so desperately to hear, called out to me.

"Kim!" She rushed inside the room, throwing herself on me and hugging me tightly. I froze, I know she died, I watched it happen, the captain consoled me when it happened, so how?

"…how?" I felt her stiffen at my statement. She pushed herself back from me, raising her hand and flicking me on the forehead.

"You idiot, is that the first thing you say when you see your girlfriend after so long?" She muttered, tears threatening to spill out.

"It's not his fault, after all it's been years."

Huh?

"Wait what?! What happened to the rest of the country, did we win?!" I clutched my sheets tightly, anticipating the answer to my questions. I hoped for a positive reply, no matter how dreary things seemed, I wished for…no, I needed a positive reply.

"Heh, of course we won." The general gave another rare smirk of his. My vision became blurry as tears threatened to spill over, I pulled Isabella into a hug, grinning as widely as I used to, back from before humanity fell into chaos.

"It's over, we did it."

"Yes, yes we did." Her arms held me like I would vanish if she let go, it wasn't concerning because I held her the same way.

….

"…heh, that…that'd be…nice." I muttered, breathing my last.
