Chapter 43 - Dinner gone wrong II

Silence took charge of the most beautiful and serene environment in the plane. Maverick wanted to say something to break the silence but he could not decide on what to say to her.

Maybe sorry! Or maybe everything would be alright!... Nothing he wanted to say seemed fit to say it.

He looked at her again. She was still looking at the dark sky. The stars in the dark looked beautiful but he knew she was not seeing the beauty of what she was staring at. She had been staring at it for the past three plus hours without moving.

The jet landed in Texas and they found his men waiting with the convoy well aligned. They boarded the bugatti veyron and the convoy rolled to life. In less than a half an hour they got to the mansion.

Calista was more than happy to be home again,to be in her house as much as not her house. The calming feeling of being back in the mansion calmed her hurting heart and she relaxed abit.

With Maverick beside her, she walked towards the door of the enormous extravagant mansion which looked even more beautiful than she thought before.

She walked towards the stairs without looking back at him,her hand on the handrails. She could not be more grateful to him than she was now for getting her away from that place. But again, she remembered the look on Melinda's face when Maverick scolded her and she felt guilty. He could not have said all that to Melinda if not because of her.

He shouldn't have done that.

She stopped on her track and turned. She found him looking up to her. He shifted his gaze away quickly. He was embarrassed that he was caught red handed staring at her cute butt as she walked away. He hated to admit that he was embarrassed for being caught looking at his own wife's butt.

"You know you didn't have to do that for me. She is Casey's mother and she called you son and no son talks to their mother in such a way!"

Calista was glad that he stood up for her but she could not fight back the guilt that had now replaced the gladness in her heart.

She felt horrible than an older woman was insulted just because of her.

"First, I did not do that for you. I would have done that if it was anyone else and if she really is a mother then she should know that no mother speaks to their son's wife as she did,"he corrected in almost a bark.

Calista looked at her entwined fingers shortly then smiled. For the second time the same,he had called her his wife and not to mock her or intimidate her but in a serious way. She was sad that he did that because he was obligated to,with no strings attached but it was much better than not doing nothing at all.

"You know, when I was a kid I used to get that more often. My classmates somehow knew that I did not have a dad and they would always make fun of me. But then my sister was ever there for me and always fought for me. At highschool things were pretty different. I did not get the bullyings but I was secluded for being raised by a 'poor mom' as they said it. Only my sister and her friend Nathan always made me feel better. You are the first person besides my sister and Nathan that have actually stood up for me,"Calista explained, with tears in her eyes now.

She was crying quietly while playing with her fingers and Maverick found that very cute with the exception of the tears.

"I asked Liz to prepare dinner since you hardly touched your food earlier. Come eat before going to bed. We don't want you having stomach ulcers due to hunger and make me spend much money on your treatment."

Maverick ignored what she said earlier and cracked a joke though it didn't sound like one with how stiff and cold his voice was.

Calista chuckled and wiped off her tears.

"You need to work on your sense of humor if you want that to sound less harsh,"she spoke with a smile then sniffled.

" lts fine with how it sounds, now come have dinner,"his voice was quite soft now.

Calista shook her head then spoke.

"It's past midnight Maverick. I will have breakfast very early in the morning."

She declined the idea of having dinner but right before she could continue walking away,a middle man came to view. He was in a black suit and his hair was done in pretty well.

"Welcome back sir.."the man spoke bowing slightly before him.

Maverick frowned upon seeing him then his face took it's normal calm nature.

"Thank you Meshach..." His response was calm.

"This is your ma'am, my wife and this is the butler, Meshach," Maverick introduced them to each other.

"Pleasure to meet you Meshach.."Calista smiled at him friendly.

"Am honored to meet you ma'am and dinner is already served,"Meshach informed.

"A- actually thank you but am fine,"she protested in the most calm way ever.

Meshach nodded with a slight bow. Calista could not wait to get to bed already. She excused herself and turned to leave but then Meshach informed Maverick that someone had called the landline and asked for the madam.

"Who was is it?"Maverick asked.

"It was a woman..she said she is Ishaani Kapoor,"Meshach informed him.

Calista almost missed her next step when she heard the name.

Why on earth would her mother call after everything?

She turned abruptly and looked at Meshach with a questioning gaze.

"Ishaani Kapoor?"she asked again and he nodded in acceptance.

Maverick watched her face and what he found there was so new to him.

He could not tell if she was happy or sad or hurt or..any something thing else he did not know.

"Message?" he asked directly.

"She asked me to give the madam this number and call her,"he spoke and took out a piece of paper from his pocket.

Calista could feel her eyes tearing up and her heart pounding with anticipation. She did not know whether to be happy that her mother had finally remembered her or to continue being mad at her for selling her to the Atlas family.

Thinking of how insulted she was back at the Atlas Mansion and how unhappy she has been for not being able to continue her music carrier, she knew that she was not ready to talk to her just yet.

"Get rid of that paper Meshach and never mention her name again unless I ask you to."

Her voice was stern and authoritative as she gave the order.

With that she ran to her room and hopped on the bed without changing into a more comfortable clothes or washing up.

Maverick turned to Meshach after Calista had disappeared from his sight.

"Give me the paper and forget about the woman who called,"he also ordered him and Meshach did as instructed. He dipped the paper into his pocket and unhurriedly walked to his room.

She buried her face on the pillow and took in a deep breathes. She remembered her mother's smile and tenderness anytime she spoke to her and wondered why she gave her to this man, just because her sister ran away.

Her deep breathes unsteadied and tears began falling off from her eyes. She sobbed and shook uncontrollably. She hated herself for being selfish not to understand why her mother did what she did but no one expected her to.

"I have taken alot so far mother and I can take it hating myself for your selfishness. You took away everything that matters to me. I really fought and worked myself out to be in that position and to get that far in my carrier but you,my mother, destroyed all that... don't blame for being selfish and not forgiving you because you never thought of me before deciding to sell me off,"she lamented as more and more tears gushed from her eyes.

"But you know what mother,I will work besides pursuing my carrier. I will get on my feet soon with nobody's help. I will show you just how strong I am. Watch me,"she spoke then took off her eye glasses. She wiped the tears but they kept on rolling down her cheeks.

She cried until she fell asleep with her shoes still on her feet.

Maverick stood at the door. He somehow knew she must be crying inside that room and he could not help his heart from clenching in pain as well. He knew how it felt to loose what you love most so he remained outside and stayed there for a while. With the sound proof walls,he could not hear if she was crying or doing something crazy.

The thought of her doing something crazy to herself got him worried but he did not move from where he stood.

After almost a whole hour of standing at the door silently,he turned and walked away to his room with his hands in his pocket.
