Ash watched as the gate slowly filled with energy, about to open completely. His mind took him back to the test he took when he became eleven a few months ago.
It was standard that the chief or whoever was in charge would test the children's elemental affinities once reaching the age of eleven. He received a basic attribute, which meant he had no direct affinities.
This was a double-edged sword; on one hand he could choose any beast he wants moving forward, but on the other he would have slower results compared to those with high affinities towards an element or concept.
His friend Kaz had tested high for fire, illusion, and metal. If he stuck to those three elements, then he would level up and even evolve his beasts faster compared to himself if he chose the same elements.
When they bonded with their beasts, they would become level one and even unlock their innate skills. Skills could be gained through their beast or by themselves, but they only had a finite number of innate skills. These were unique only to you and most only had one innate skill when completing their first bond. Innate skills could be gained; however, they were tremendously difficult to gain.
Ash looked at Kaz who looked back at him and gave him a nervous nod. Both boys knew the gravity of entering the realm. They could die or be unable to find a suitable beast.
They came from a relatively humble village, so they had no preexisting knowledge of the environment inside. They had to find something inside and quick, this was also an opportunity to gain experience.
Ash thought about his parents; he wanted to help them with their less-than-ideal situation.
His parents went through hell to not only educate him but make sure he was proficient in fighting and healing. The better your starting point, the better the stats you awaken.
He may not be able to compare to those who come from a clan, school, or sect; however, he was educated, and at least above average compared to his pears. He had knowledge of beasts, herbs and even metals. Others were not fortunate enough to learn nearly as much. His village wasn't the best but at least his parents hammered these things into him, even if it was unpleasant.
