"Hey, Jade! Wake up!"
I felt someone roughly shaking me and calling my name.
I opened my eyes and saw someone I had never seen before standing over me looking scared.
He let out a sigh of relief and took my hand into his.
"Come on and sit up." He insisted. "You scared the shit out of me. I thought you were dead...and on my watch, at that. I have been knocking on the door for the past
ten minutes."
He slowly helped me sit up as he carefully examined my every move.
"Sorry." I whispered. "I don't even remember going to sleep.
He nodded and looked away from me.
"I see that they did a real number on you." He brought his eyes back to mine and sighed. "You look like hell, let me get you something to eat."
"NO!" I exclaimed. "I mean...no. I'm not hungry." I remembered what Chance had told me about what he did to my food and I refused to go through that shit again.
He looked at me like I was insane and then shook his head.
"I know that you're hungry. It's after 9pm and if I'm correct, you haven't eaten since this morning when..." He stopped himself from finishing that sentence. "I just want
to help. I swear. You can watch me fix the sandwiches. You have my word; I will not put those fucking pills in your food."
I almost winced when he mentioned those horrible pills. I thought about what he said and realized that I was quite hungry.
"Ok. I guess I should eat something. What's your name?" I asked him.
"That's unimportant. I'm breaking too many rules as it is already. I think it's best if I keep my name to myself for now." He explained.
I nodded as I thought about the rules. He was risking a lot by being in here. I didn't understand why he'd do it.
"No one saw me come in so relax. I know everyone's schedule, so I was careful." He said as he made his way to the refrigerator.
He took out everything he needed to make the sandwiches while I watched him like a hawk. I made sure that he didn't try to slip me anymore of those devil pills.
He reached over and handed me a sandwich and then took a bite of his. He then proceeded to take a black flask out of his pocket and took a sip from it.
I assumed that it must've been the were's moonshine. Every guy that was a were drank the stuff because it was the strongest drink in the world that could get a were
drunk.
We sat and ate our food quietly for awhile until he looked up from his plate and landed his eyes on me.
"My name's Charles, by the way." He stated.
Oh shit! He must've been Chloe's mate.
"Oh. Well hi Charles." I said as I tried to read his facial expression and body movement.
"Ya know, I'm sorry that you got picked for this. It's fucked up, ya know." He slurred. I can only imagine why he thinks this is fucked up for me. His mate is a breeder too and there's nothing he can do to protect her.
I nodded since there was nothing that I could say that could make this situation any better.
He kept quiet as he continued drinking and taking bites of his food. I could tell that he had a lot on his mind and for the first time since I've been here, I didn't feel scared of the person that I was stuck in the room with.
After I finished my sandwich, I got up and washed my plate off.
All of a sudden, he leaned back in his chair and stared at me as if he were seeing me for the first time.
"Ya' know, you really did get the short end of the stick here. You were never supposed to be a fucking breeder." He said as his slur became more pronounced.
"I know all about your parents, Jade, and let me tell you... they were amazing weres. They were both beta blood weres. Which means...you my dear Jade, are beta
blood too."
