2 YEARS LATER
EVANORA
I woke up from my dream panting. These dreams seem like they're getting stronger as the years pass by. More real.
I sat up in my bed trying to steady my heart beat looking around my room. It's basically empty. The only real personal Items are a picture on my nightstand and my toiletries on my dresser. I started to slow my breathing while staring at the bundled lavender flowers that repeat in the design of the wallpaper. 'I love purple but I'm starting to hate this wallpaper.' I said to myself. trying to get my mind on something else.
The tenant before me was an older woman. She moved into a retirement community shortly before I moved in. The Landlord offered to paint and take down the hideous wallpaper. I declined simply because I was so happy to get the apartment. It's close to my new job and the shopping area close by has everything. There's a cafe, boutiques, a theatre and several bakeries. It's in a quiet neighborhood with lots of young families. I love everything else about my apartment except for this damn wallpaper. He gave me permission to update the apartment myself. He even said I could take the cost of the materials out of the rent as long as I provide receipts. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I inhale a calming breath letting it out slowly. The sky is still dark. I look over at the boxes that are stacked in the corner of my room, waiting to be unpacked. "I'll deal with you after work." I stated aloud as I flung the covers off and swung my legs over the side of bed, coming to a seated position. I peak at my clock on my nightstand. 'It's 4am?! Of course it is. I always wake up at 4. 'I said to myself and sighed.
My eyes drift over to the framed photo of my parents next to my clock. If it wasn't for our drastic difference in appearance, I never would have known that I was adopted. My parents loved me deeply. My mother stood at 5'8" with light brown hair and bright piercing blue eyes. She had a slender but shapely figure with a pink undertone to her light skin. Dad was 6' even with bright blonde hair and blue eyes but his eyes are a few shades darker than Mom's. He was broad across the shoulders showing he had the potential to be a mammoth if he hit the gym regularly but he maintained a fit but slender body. He said being too bulky in the kitchen made it difficult for him and others to move around. They both had the potential to be models but their love of food drove them to become chefs. I never bothered to ask about my birth parents because they were the best parents I could ask for. Mom learned how to do my hair and what products were best for it and Dad taught me about black history. Real Black history. Not what they teach in school. They understood it was different parenting a black child and I think they did a wonderful job.
***Back story***
My parents met through a mutual friend. They went on their first date and melded together almost instantly. They couldn't stay away from each other. After 6 months of dating, they were married in a small ceremony in the forest. Both were nature lovers. They went on adventurous vacations, like rock climbing and white water rafting. But their favorite place was under a large oak tree about a half mile into the woods behind their house. That's where they got married.
Since they married young, for the sake of their careers, they agreed to wait to have children. As time went on, they became successful and decided it was time to expand their family. Then tragedy struck. Mom was officially diagnosed with a hostile womb after four miscarriages. She was completely crushed and my father was heartbroken for his beautiful wife. They held onto each other despite the hardship. They would go foraging herbs and mushrooms, while discussing their menus. Once they arrived at their tree, they would sit and talk about exploring surrogate mothers or maybe adopting a child. What they didn't know is that someone was watching them.
One day, while out on their usual walk, my mom heard a baby crying. She dashed through the forest so quickly, that she nearly twisted her ankle. When she finally found the source of the cries, she kneeled down and gathered me and her arms. She found me lying under their tree in a hand carved bassinet that resembled a wreath of roses. When Dad finally caught up, he found Mom holding me. "What's a baby doing out here?", he asked trying to catch his breath. He dropped to his knees and began to rummage around the ornate bassinet. He found a letter from my birth mother. It read:
Dear David and Patricia Silver,
You don't know me but I've watched over you for nearly a decade. I wanted to approach the both of in person but now I've run out of time. Unfortunately, a letter is all I can manage.
I first stumbled upon you two the day of your wedding. The love you have for each other is palpable. I couldn't help but stay and watch from afar. Over the years I'd come across the two of you on my walks. Always under this old oak tree. I have heard your goals, seen your happiness and shared in your sorrows. I truly ached for you both when I heard your tragic news. Dearest Patricia, I'm so sorry for what you have gone through. A situation such as that would have broken most couples. It warmed my heart to see that David is steadfast in his love and support for you. It's because of that, I know I can trust you both with my most valued gift, my daughter, Evanora.
She was born April 23rd. If I'm not mistaken, it's the 1 year anniversary of when you received your unfortunate news. As a believer in fate, I don't think this is coincidence.
My husband disappeared a few days ago. I fear the worse has happened to him. I was so devastated, my labor started early. Due to the suspicious nature of my husband's disappearance, I gave birth to her in secret. No one knows save for my most trusted and closest friend, Enid. Unfortunately, the disappearance of my husband and the stress of the labor has taken its toll. As you're reading this I'm nearing death.
I believe Evanora was meant to be raised by the two of you. I know she'll grow up in a loving home. Patricia, you are smart and quick witted with a loving heart. I know you'll raise her to think ahead and not settle for mediocrity. David, you are kind but firm, loving and giving but will do anything to protect those you love. I believe that you two will love my daughter just as much as you love each other. You're both ambitious but humble and know the importance of loyalty. I wish I would have officially met you both. I wholeheartedly believe we would have become great friends.
Enclosed in the red satchel is a necklace and a signet ring proving her lineage. When she reaches the age of 21, please give her these. The one whom is meant for her, will find her.
I know this comes across as cryptic. I apologize for that. I wish I could explain but time isn't on my side.
Keep her safe, please, and shower her with all the love I will be unable to give her.
Your greatest secret admirer,
Sarah Hollows
After Dad was finished reading the letter, he passed it to Mom. As she read it tears swelled in her eyes. Once she was done, Dad took the letter, folded it, and slid it back into its envelope. He then picked up the little red satchel, placing both in his inside jacket pocket.
My parents looked at each other in shock and amazement. As, if they could read each other's mind, they kissed gently with tears falling freely from both of their eyes. They looked down at me in Mom's arms and fell just as deeply for me as they did one another. Dad kissed me and said "Let's get her home and fed". He helped Mom to her feet then grabbed the bassinet and escorted us home.
They spent a lot of money and cut some corners but were finally able to adopt me just before my first birthday. I became Evanora Victoria Silver and I was very lucky to have them as my parents.
***PRESENT DAY***
After my parents passed, I found Dad's old journals. That's how I learned the story. I wish I could have talked to them about it. I just didn't want them to think that I was ungrateful or didn't love them, so I never asked them about my birth mom.
I force myself off the bed and approach the neatly stacked boxes. Behind the boxes is the painting I made when I was 15. Mom was so proud, she had it framed. She wanted to hang it in the dining room but Dad objected. I slide the painting out and unwrap it carefully. It's of me and my dream man. In my room at my parents house, it hung over my bed. I always feel comforted when I looked at it. Safe. I attach four sticky strips to the back and hang it carefully above my bed in my new room. 'Welcome home', I say to myself smiling wide.
I unpack my bookshelf and assemble it. I then unpack three boxes of books and three box of shoes putting them in their respective places. My alarm clock sounds letting me know it's 6 a.m. just as I finish breaking down the empty boxes. I hit the button turning off my alarm clock, eyeing the remaining seven boxes then said aloud "Me against all of you after work" making the 'I'm watching you' hand gesture. I chuckle at my silliness and start getting ready.
I jump in the shower and use my peach body wash that I save for special occasions. I wash up, hop out, towel off lightly and apply my cocoa butter all over my skin. I put on my black silk bra and panty set with a black silk slip over it then begin my makeup. I do a simple cat eye using navy blue eyeliner and add a little bit of concealer under my eyes. I use a little bit of blush with a sheer pink tinted lip gloss. I take a step back and admire my handiwork. 'Perfect' I say to myself. My hair is thick and a little unruly this morning so I brush it down into a nice simple bun.
I walk to my closet and pick my navy blue pencil skirt suit with my semi shimmery cerulean blue button down shirt. My black slingback heels perfectly complement the outfit. I don't have any jewelry except a watch my parents bought me for my 18th birthday, an antique gold necklace and a dainty signet ring from my birth mother. In the middle of the chain is a letter H designed like a rose stem with the rose attached to the left foot of the H. The ring mimics the design of the chain. After I finished getting dressed, I give myself a final look in the full length mirror in my room. My suit fits like a glove. I took a deep breath turning to the picture of my parents and say aloud "I'm going to make you both proud". I smile and walk out to the kitchen
.
I grab my keys and purse off the island counter, ready for whatever challenges today may hold. I move across the open space of my kitchen and livingroom to the front door of my apartment. I step through, locking the door behind me. I walk down the hall of the two family house to the main entrance. With my hand on the knob, I said to myself, 'New place. New job. New life.' I open the heavy door and step out onto the porch. I look up and down the near empty street. It's April so the trees are starting to bloom and there's still a slight chill in the morning air. I can't help but feel like something amazing is going to happen today. I smirk at the thought, "Let do this.", I said aloud walking towards my car.
----------
I arrive early at Ryan Enterprises. It's a 80 story building with reflective glass all around, complete with a helipad on the roof. 'This is it. You got this Eva'., I said to myself. Giddy with excitement, I enter the lobby. There's a young woman behind the desk with blonde hair and hazel eyes in a neatly pressed blouse. As I approach, she eyes me and stiffen her demeanor. I smile politely and say, "Good morning. My name is Evanora Silver. I'm beginning work today on the 78th floor." She assesses me again before stating "I need to see your ID". I pull my wallet out of my purse and retrieve my driver's license. She snatches it from my fingertips and checks her list. "You're not on the list of new employees. I can't grant you access.", she said as she rolls her eyes and hands me back my license. I frown slightly. "Can you call Maggie O'Connor? She hired me. I'm sure she can clear this up", I politely state putting my things back in my purse. She rolls her eyes again ready to refuse when my name is called.
"Evanora! Good morning!" Maggie sang as she approached us. Maggie is an older woman that looks to be in her mid to late 40's. She's fair skin with freckles and her red hair was pulled back into an elegant French braid. Her pale green eyes are complemented by her mint green blouse, which is neatly tucked into her black slacks. "Good morning." I said turning towards her flashing a big smile. "I got her from here Janice.", Maggie stated giving Janice a flat look. She loops her arm through mine and we walked in the direction she came from with the sound of our heels echoing through the cavernous lobby.
"How are you settling in? Have you had a chance to explore yet?", she asks me with a genuine smile. "I'm still unpacking.", I respond feeling a little guilty. I've been in my apartment nearly three weeks now. I should be done unpacking. "I did find a cute little Cafe about two blocks from my apartment. Saturday, I spent the afternoon there reading, then went to a movie afterwards. I love the neighborhood. It's so quiet.", I told her with a soft smile. "I'm glad you're enjoying you new place. Don't worry about the time it takes to unpack. There's no right or wrong way nor is there a time limit.", she said patting my shoulder as we approached an elevator bay. That did make me feel better. Maggie released my arm and handed me my work ID. The elevator bay is locked behind a heavy glass door with a key card reader next to it. "Now then, you need to carry this with you at all times. You will not have access without it. However, I don't recommend wearing it on your clothing. It would be easy for someone to steal. There are a select few with key cards to this area of the building. If you lose yours, let me know right away so it can be deactivated. Go ahead and swipe your card.", said Maggie.
I swiped my card, Maggie pushed the door open and we walked into the small elevator bay. "This elevator only goes to Mr. Ryan's personal garage, the lobby, floors 77-80 and the helipad. If you have a car, you may use the garage. Just use your card to gain access. The entrance is on the East side of the building." Inside the elevator, there was a scanner next to the buttons. "Place your thumb there before pushing your floor.," Maggie instructed. I scanned my thumb then pressed 78, and the doors closed. "Floors 77- and 78 are split. There are offices on the other side and they can be accessed from the main elevator bay. Mr. Ryan's side can only be accessed by these two elevators and two stairwells.", She explained. "How many people are in our offices?", I asked. "Security is on 77.From time to time we have receive threats. We think they're harmless but you might have to accept having a body guard around. sometimes. Safety is Mr. Ryan's top priority. For himself and his people. Our office is 78. I'll of course give you the tour. 79 and 80 are the penthouse. Technically, it does belong to Mr.Ryan, he just doesn't live there. We use it from time to time for our personal use but mostly it's for our special out of town guests, family and friends", she said. "Wow, really? That's very generous of him.", I said. "Think your friends will be visiting?", asked Maggs. "Oh. I don't think so.", I said. "Well, when I said 'our', I meant you as well, darlin'. Mr. Ryan like making sure the people around him feel safe and welcome. You can use the penthouse anytime you like.

The elevator door opened to a large, brightly lit office. The reception area was set right before a glass partition. The desk was extremely neat and organized. The scent of strawberry and amber was lingering in the air. "This is my desk. Anything you need feel to ask. I tend to keep things well stocked but if there is anything you would like specifically, all you need to do is ask," Maggie said. "Our restroom is here.", she said and turned the corner by her desk and pointed to a door on the left. "We are solely responsible for keeping our restroom clean. There's a cleaning crew that comes twice a month to do a deep cleaning but we are to supervise them closely. No one is allowed on this floor unless there's a meeting with special clients or they are invited by Mr. Ryan. No deliveries and no unannounced outsiders. He highly values his privacy. ", Maggie explained while holding open the glass door to the rest of the office. To the left is a breakfast nook containing an espresso machine, a mini fridge, with two small baskets (one with fruit and one with pastries), complete with cabinets, a sink and one countertop. On the right is a small lounge area. There are deep burgundy couches and chairs with a black coffee table in the middle. Behind the lounge is a conference room encased in glass. It has a long black table with burgundy chairs around it. On the far wall you can see a 50 inch monitor on a off white wall and a long side table underneath it. Across from the conference room entrance is what I assume to be my desk. It's a dark cherry wood desk with a monitor and keyboard to the right. On the left is a multi-line phone, a leather journal, a cell phone and a pen cup.
Behind my desk starts another glass enclosure. "That's Mr. Ryan's office.", Maggie says giving a nod in that direction. "The conference room is for his special clients. All other meetings are held at the client's site. Feel free to have whatever you like from the breakfast nook but please eat in the lounge area or conference room, not at your desk. Coffee is fine. ", she said gesturing to the desk in front of us. "You are Mr. Ryan's personal assistant. I'm his administrative assistant. I handle paperwork, legal issues, and clients. You do the more personal tasks. Setting appointments, arranging the food for meetings with the special clients, making accommodations for travel and visiting clients, and dealing with Mr. Ryan's day to day personal needs", Maggie stated. "I've synced your computer to his date book. He has a trip coming up next week. The details are noted. You can go over them, double check all the reservations, and go over the paperwork just so you know what's going on. It might be confusing at first but I'm training you.", she smiled and winked. "I'm sure you'll catch on quick.", she stated walking to my desk picking up the cell phone. "All the numbers and information needed to execute your duties are here in this phone. Hotels, restaurants, car services, etc. Acquaint yourself with today's tasks," she stated handing me the phone. "Got it", I said taking the phone from her. "Being that Mr. Ryan's schedule changes frequently there are no set hours but I recommend you show up about 8 a.m. If there's a day no one will be in the office, you can work from home.. There's a laptop in the bottom drawer of your desk that you can use on those days. Do you have any questions?" Maggie asked smiling warmly. " Yes. If I'm his personal assistant, why would I need to know about the business deal? Am I expected to go on the trip with him?", I asked. "Yes. This will be the first of many meetings you sit in on. Its part of your training. It will help you understand what we do.", said Maggie. "I don't have a passport. I don't know if I can get one on time.", I said. "No worries, darling. We already have one being expedited for you. It was part of the paperwork the day you were hired. I'm having it sent to the airstrip. You can get it from the captain.", Maggie said smiling. "Do you have any more concerns or questions?" she asked. Questions or concerns? My first day at work and I'm being told I have to go to Italy! This is a dream come true! So I smiled back and said, "Just how Mr. Ryan likes his coffee."
Before she could answer, the elevator dings. A man steps off the elevator talking on a cellphone with his head down. He is extremely tall standing at 6'7". He has a light brown complexion. His hair is midnight black and long. It seems to reach his elbow, and it shines like satin. It covered his face so I couldn't get a clear look at it. His broad shoulders fills out his blue suit perfectly. His white shirt had the top two buttons undone. When he pulled the door open, a small part of a tattoo could be seen on his muscular chest. He gave a small wave to us without looking up while taking long strides to his office. 'Is it him? It couldn't be. The man from my dreams is just that. A dream. Lots of men wear their hair long. Right?', I thought. The sweetest scent hit my nose as he passed. It should be a sin for a man to smell so delicious. A tingle ran through me.
"Do you know how to make lattes?" Maggie asked snapping me out of my trance. "Y-yes", I said blinking my way back to reality. "A double-shot latte with a dash of caramel and cinnamon", Maggie says before she turned to follow Mr. Ryan. I nodded to myself, placing my purse and new cell phone on my desk. I walked over to the espresso machine and started on his latte. My mind wandered waiting for the espresso to brew. I was in the red study from my dream. I was looking down at him sitting in the arm chair. He turned and looked up at me. His eyes were so full of love and wanting. He was gentle when taking my hand. Like I'd crumble and turn to dust if he dared to risk too much pressure. I sighed and shook my head.
I had to remind myself that I am making my new boss his latte. 'Focus Evanora.', I scolded myself. I pulled out a mug and saucer out of the cabinet above the machine. After pouring two shots of espresso into the large mug, I started to warm up the milk. 'Crazy coincidence that my boss likes his coffee made the same way I do'. I grabbed the caramel topping and dropped one teaspoon in the espresso then mixed it. Once the milk was hot, I gently added it making a leaf pattern. I sprinkled cinnamon into my palm then brush it off so that it could lightly kiss the surface of the perfectly made latte. 'Kiss... wouldn't it be nice if I could kiss the man of my dreams? He's probably the best kisser. What is wrong with me?!', I thought to myself. I shook my head and made sure the outside of the mug was clean. It's done.
I placed the mug on a saucer, wiped down the counter and headed to Mr. Ryan's office with his perfect latte. He was seated on the side of his desk giving instructions to Maggie while going through his phone. His back was to me and his hair shrouded his face. I entered the glass office and turned to the left towards his desk.
"... and I'll need a gift for when the meeting is finalized.", he said to Maggie without looking up. His voice was smooth and deep. His office smelled like mint and freshly cut grass. My two favorite scents. I took a deep breath and said, "Your latte sir.", extending my arm to pass him the saucer and mug.
He looked up at me and my heart skipped a beat. He was clean shaven with a strong jawline. He had smooth skin coupled with smooth lips (that looked perfectly supple) and a straight nose. Then I saw his eyes! Those eyes that haunt my dreams. One green and one grey. I stopped breathing and released my hold on the saucer before he could grab it. He quickly reached out and caught it without spilling a single drop. "Oh! I'm SO sorry Mr. Ryan!", I said covering my face and nearly dying from embarrassment. Him and Maggie both looked at me. Maggie gave me a knowing look but his face is blank. 'He's real! How can he be real?' I said to myself.
"This is Evanora Silver. Your new personal assistant. Evanora this is Mr.Ryan.", Maggie said. He looked away placing his latte on his desk. "Hello Evanora.", he smiled softly. My knees nearly gave out on me. "Hi", I squeaked with my eyes wide. "Evanora.", said Maggie again snapping me out of my trance. "Everything okay?", she asked. I was not about to admit that I'd been dreaming of my boss for years so I simply said "Yes. I was just caught off guard. I pictured Mr. Ryan differently.", I said. My eyes went wide again. "I mean, I was thrown off by his eyes. They're.... unique.", I said. Smirking but satisfied with that response, Maggs turned back towards Ryan. "I told her about the trip and what's expected of her. I'll have her up to date and ready before the trip.", said Maggs. "Wait. You're not coming?", Ryan asked surprised. "Nope. My son is coming to visit with the triplets. Time with them seems more important at this stage in my life.", said Maggs. 'Why does it sound like she's retiring?', I asked myself. Magss barely looks 50, and that's pushing it. "Maggs..", said Ryan. Maggs turned to me and said "Thank you, Evanora. Please excuse us." I nodded and turned to leave. "Nice meeting you, Evanora. I look forward to working with you.", said Ryan slightly smiling. I blushed, nodded at him then left.
'What is happening?!', I yelled in my head. 'He's real! And I'm going to Italy with him for a week!' I sat at my desk and took a deep breath. I felt eyes on me so I started going through the list of tasks that need to be done before our trip. I tried my best to ground myself and not get lost in the millions of questions rolling around in my head. I took my shoes off and planted my feet. I focused and started going through each task one by one. First, I confirmed our hotel and car reservations. Then, I called the cleaners to find out if his stuff was ready for pick up. It is. There's a note to pick up his shoes from the shoe repair shop next door. I'll go after my lunch break. Then, I thought about going to brunch before signing the contracts for the new building. It would help everyone involved be more relaxed and clear headed for the meeting. I pulled out my work journal and started making notes. I have a habit of planning out my day so I can get what I need accomplished. Just as I finished jotting down my notes, Maggas comes out of Ryan's office. "Well, let's get started.", she said walking up to me.
Maggs took her time and explained my role more thoroughly. I am to assist and try to anticipate the needs of Ryan and the clients. He is looking for a location that would be central to his European clients. Ryan Enterprises has investments a lot of different businesses. But it's main source of income are hotels and resorts. The building he is looking at is a lot like this one. There will be multiple floors for his use only and the others will be rented to other companies. Dad was really hands on when designing the restaurant and, me being me, I was over his shoulder the whole time. That helped me a lot when looking at the blueprints of what Mr.Ryan has in mind for the new building.
It was nearing lunch and I was putting away all the paperwork for the Italy meeting. "These are your company cards. The black one is for whatever shopping or booking you do for Ryan. The silver one is for you. You can use it to buy whatever you need. Clothes, accessories, or stuff for your new place.", said Maggs handing them to me. I looked stunned. "It's part of your sign on bonus. The limit is $50,000 but if you need more just say the word and we will raise it for you." I took the cards slowly and said, "But I have business clothes. I don't really need to buy more.", I said. "Mr. Ryan deals with millionaires. Your clothes are lovely, dear. However, you'll be representing the company and Mr. Ryan. You'll be needing to look the part.", she said. "Normally, high end designers don't fit me. I would have to get them tailored.", I said. Maggs smirked and raised a brow as if I gave her an idea. She took the papers out of my hands and said, "I know exactly who to call. Go and pick up his dry cleaning. By the time you get back we'll be leaving for the day.", said Maggs with a smirk. She rushed back to her desk and started to call someone. i shook my head. 'She didn't give me a chance to say no. But something tells me I'd lose the argument anyway', I said to myself. I watched Maggie talk quietly on the phone as I slipped on my shoes and picked up my purse. I made it a point to not to look towards Ryan's office. I walked out with my head high and my posture correct. I could feel his eyes on me. I walked through the glass door and waited for the elevator. I made sure not to look over my shoulder. 'Why does the whole office need to be glass?', i whimpered in my mind. I got on the elevator and kept my eyes on floor until the doors closed.
The cleaners weren't far at all. Only three blocks. I drove my car because I had to pick up five suits and four pairs of shoes. I found the garage and parked. Ryan had two cars and two SUV's parked there. All of them were high end. My car looked so old and cheap next to them. It was kind of embarrassing. I picked up the suits and shoes from the back seat and got on the elevator.
When the doors opened on the office floor, Maggs was sitting in the lounge area with a fabulously dressed woman with pink hair. Maggs stood and opened the door for me. "Evanora, I want you to meet Mimi. She is an old friend and fashion designer. She has worked with many famous designers and has become a regular in the high end fashion world. She has recently started her own line and would love to help you with your clothing needs.", said Maggs taking the suits and shoes from me. "I'll put these in Ryan's office then we can go." I smiled. This is becoming a bit overwhelming. "Hi! It's nice to meet you.", said Mimi. "You as well. I'm sorry if this is a bother. I told her I have business clothes.", I said hoping to get out of this.. Mimi smiled softly and looked me over. "I see. I imagine you have to tailor all your clothes given your shape?", she asked. "Well, yeah. i learned to tailor my own clothes. It can be expensive and I don't want to waste that kind of money.", I said blushing and pulling at my clothes. "That's impressive. Your stitching looks professional.", said Mimi taking a closer look. "That's a great compliment coming from an actual professional.", I smiled. "I know you maybe a bit uncomfortable having to go shopping spree. Especially given the price tags on the clothes ", she said giving me an understanding smile. "Please understand, no one is attacking your clothes or style of dress. It's just that with the job you have taken on, you will be by Mr.Ryan's side at balls, charity events and galas. Not just meetings. You're going to need attire that fits all those situations.", said Mimi smiling. I smiled back still a bit uncomfortable. "We all came from humble beginnings. Not one person in this office had a silver spoon growing up. But the Goddess has seen fit to bless us for our work. Every job has a uniform.", she said gesturing to all of us. "These clothes, will be yours.", she said smiling softly, patting my shoulder. Maggs said something to him before leaving and all he did was nod slightly. I looked towards Ryan's office and he had his head down looking over some papers on his desk and talking on the phone. I guess he doesn't object. "Ready?", asked Maggs. I nodded reluctantly and we all headed out.
We took one of Ryan's black cars in the garage and drove off. We got to a shopping area in the city and pulled up to a fancy looking boutique. A tall blonde woman met us at the curb and Maggs handed her the keys. The stunning woman slipped into the driver's seat and drove off. I assume to park it somewhere. I followed Maggs and Mim inside. Everything in the store seemed to sparkle. Like a fairy made all of the fabric for the clothes on display. The weird thing is, there weren't shelves or racks of sizes. Just mannequins dressed up in outfits suits and dresses. It seemed more like art on display then clothes for sale. "Welcome to my studio. Everything you see can be custom made specifically for you. Every item has swatches attached to them. You, of course, can chose the color and fabric for your clothes. The swatches are my suggestion for each piece.", said Mimi pointing at a swatch on a flowy silk dress that seemed almost ethereal. I nodded in understanding and saw several pieces that I wanted. "This way my dear.", said Mimi. Maggs and I followed her to her to a fuschia and rose gold decorated room with a small stage in the middle of it. A half moon couch lined one wall with matching end tables that are cherrywood with rose gold flowers painted on them. on the other side was a curtained off fitting room "This is my showing room. I have each show piece made in general sizes so that you can get a sense of what they will look like on you once tailored. Like what they do in bridal shops.", said Mimi handing me a glass of champagne with fruit in the bottom. "Now, let's shop!", said Maggs clinking her flute to mine before heading back to the sales floor.
I picked five suits and five shirts the can be worn interchangeably with each other. Maggs picked out four evening gowns and four cocktail dresses. Mimi put together some fashionable business casual outfits and a couple of dresses. Including that gorgeous dress I noticed when we first came in. All of them can be worn at day time events or less formal meetings. By the time I tried on everything it was close to 6pm. "I can't believe we shopped for half the work day.", I said tuckered out on the couch of the showing room. 'Yes we did and you're going to look fabulous in each and every one of them.", said Mimi raising her glass. We all giggled, clinking our glasses and taking the final sips of our drinks. "So, you should choose what you want finished first so you can take them on the trip with you.", said Maggs. "That's in a week. Surely, they won't be finished in time.", I said. Mimi smirked and said, "Yes, they will. I don't know a Shirley, but my team will have what you pick ready before you leave." I chuckled. I picked two suits, a cocktail dress and two casual dresses. I figured that would be easier to do than the slacks and evening gowns. Mimi smirked as if she knew what I was doing. "How about I just send everything over once I'm done?", she said placing her glass on the table next to her. She pulled out a book and began asking me questions. She took some notes before taking thorough measurements.
Once she was done, I slipped my silver card into her hands. "Oh no. The bill is covered. You don't have to worry about payment.", said Mimi handing me back my card. "Mr. Ryan insisted on paying for everything himself.", said Maggs in response to my look of confusion. I'm not used to this kind of princess treatment. I mean my parents were awesome in all they did but they weren't rich. "It's just a uniform. Remember?", said Mimi. I nodded slowly. "It is actually. Ryan sends me shopping every two to six months. I normally end up donating my clothes. I hate to see things go to waste. My jeans are my best friends. Clothes like these are nice but nothing beats a pair of great fitting jeans. I wish I could wear them everywhere.", said Maggs. "Its my tees and leggings for me. This is my uniform. I should always look sheik and up to date. An absolutely, fabulous uniform. But it's a uniform. I use this look for my business. You would never catch me on a off day looking like this.", said Mimi giving me a wink. I chuckled. The tension in my shoulders eased.
"Now, with that understanding, we need to complete your uniform.", said Mimi leading us to through the door on the other side of the showing room. "Shoes.", said Mimi gesturing to the space. There were high end shoes here but Mimi had her own shoe line too. You can pick the style, color, type of material and the height of the heel. I asked Mimi to pick the style of shoes she thought I would need to go with my new clothes. She nodded smiled as if grateful for the opportunity. "I'm exhausted. I never thought shopping could be so taxing.", I said. " Shopping trips after this will be easier. You just needed a few basic Items before you left for the trip. You might not have that much time to shop while there.", said Maggs. "There's going to be more shopping?", I asked. "Yeah but that's just accessories. Hair and makeup if you want. And I'm hoping you say yes to that. I need my ends trimmed.", said Maggs chuckling. 'I do need some new makeup. Haven't bought anything for years. I'm sure all my makeup is overdue to be replaced.', i said to myself. "Just let me know when. I'll be there.", I said giving her a small grin. "Excellent. I'll send you the details. Goodnight, Evanora.", said Maggs pulling out her phone. "Goodnight, Maggs. Thank you Mimi. Today was fun... ish.", I said laughing. "Hence the libations. They help. Come back in two days for a fitting. We'll have your order ready in 5 days.", said Mimi walking me out. "That fast?", I asked. "Mr. Ryan is a priority customer and by extension, so are you." she said. When we go out the front door of her boutique, there was a tall, bald, man waiting by a black SUV. "Good evening, Mimi.", he said. He was handsome but terrifying. His brows give away that he is a natural blonde but they are also thick and heavy. If he was frowning it would probably look like he was ready to kill someone. "Hi Paul. I'm guessing you're here for her?", asked Mimi smiling. "Yes I am. Hi, Ms. Silver. I'm Paul. I'm the head of security at Ryan Enterprises. Mr. Ryan asked me to escort you home.", he said. Hearing him speak made him a little less intimidating. He was a wall of a man but he carried it well. He moved smoothly when he reached for the door. I looked at Mimi. "This is normal. Paul is Mr. Ryan''s right hand man. He escorts Maggie too.", she said. "I left my car at work.", I said. "I can pick you up too if you want. It's no trouble.", he said. "Yeah, I definitely couldn't drive right now if I wanted to and I'm sure I'll have a hangover in the morning.", I said too tipsy and tired to protest or think of another solution. I wobbled to the car and climbed in the back. Paul closed the door behind me and hopped in the driver's seat. He pulled off.
I woke up to Paul holding my door open, lightly shaking me. "Ms. Silver, you're home.", he said. I looked over his shoulder and saw the front door of the town house I lived in. "Thanks.", I said. I pulled my keys out of my purse then turned to hop out. Before I could jump down Paul took off my shoes. "I'm going to walk you in.", he said. He softly grabbed for my keys. I gave them to him. I was seeing double anyway. It probably would have taken me ten minutes just to unlock the door.
He picked me up with ease then kicked the car door closed. He made quick work of the front and apartment doors while he carried me bridal-style. "I'm going to lay you on the couch.", I heard Paul say, but all I could muster was a mumble. I felt him lower me onto the couch and place a throw blanket over me. I heard him walk to the kitchen and get something. Whatever it was he placed it next to the couch. I could hear him moving around my apartment but I couldn't open my eyes to see what he was doing. I felt something cold and damp on my neck but I didn't move a muscle. "There is a bowl next to you if you feel sick. I made a sandwich for you. It's here on the table for when you wake up. Goodnight Ms. Silver.", he said. I heard him fiddle with my keys, and leave. I heard the lock click then something sliding across the floor. I wanted to open my eyes and check but sleep won that battle.
RYAN
Paul and I stepped into the elevator for my office and Onyx lost it. Onyx is my wolf. He's a cheeky bastard sometimes but he's rarely excitable. * SHE'S HERE! *, he said in shock. I sniffed the air. "What's that scent? Is the new girl here already?", Paul asked. "Gotta be. This scent is new to me too.", I said taking a deeper inhale. * MATE! *, said Onyx. A low growl rumbled in my chest. "Whoa! Relax. She's human.", said Paul. "What?", I said breathing heavily trying to focus. "I did a background check on her Before she was hired. She's adopted and was raised by humans. So, I assume she's human too. At the very least she was raised by them and probably doesn't know about werewolves. You have to calm down.", said Paul quietly but quickly. He slowly grabbed my shoulder. I took a deep breath. Onyx walked in circles anxiously. *Just wait. Let's see how this plays out. *, I said to him. Onyx laid down but was very alert. I took my phone out of my pocket and called Paul. I nodded to his pocket, and he quickly answered his phone. He pressed against the wall before the doors opened. I used my hair to cover my face and headed straight towards my office. I held my breath and gave a small wave when passing them. I didn't want to risk breathing in her scent and losing control of Onyx. When I got to my office, I took a breath and mind-linked Maggs to come here. She gave Evanora something to do and rushed in. "Well, that was rude.", she said. "She's, my mate.", I said quietly. "Wow. But her background check says that she was raised in the human world. Is she a wolf?", Maggs asked. "I have no idea. ", I said. It wouldn't be the first time one of us was dropped on a human's doorstep. Rogues do that sometimes instead of raising their kids without a pack. It can be rough on the young wolf not knowing what they are or where they come from. "All we can do is wait to see if she recognizes you from a mate dream. Here she comes.", said Maggs. Opened my calendar on my phone and said, "... and I'll need a gift for when the meeting is finalized.", as Evanora walked in. I didn't look up. "Your latte sir.", she said extending her arm to pass me the saucer and mug.
I looked up at her. Her face is just as it is in my dreams. I looked into her eyes. They are almond shaped and emerald, green. Her caramel skin looked so soft I was dying to see what it felt like against my lips. 'Wait, does she recognize me?', I asked myself. Then I saw her eyes widen. She released her hold on the saucer before I could grab it, but I quickly reached out and caught it without spilling a single drop. "Oh! I'm SO sorry Mr. Ryan!", she said covering her face. 'She does!', I said to myself/ I looked over at Maggs and she nodded in my direction to indicate that she saw it too. Evanora dropped her hands and we both looked at her. Her face was beet red. She looked at Maggie and Maggie gave her a knowing look, but I kept my face blank. I could see a little bit of panic or disbelief flash across her face.
"This is Evanora Silver. Your new personal assistant. Evanora, this is Mr. Ryan.", Maggie said. I looked away placing the latte on my desk. I took a slow breath then turned back and said, "Hello Evanora." I smiled softly at her to try not to make her feel embarrassed. "Hi", she squeaked with her eyes wide. "Evanora.", said Maggie again snapping her out of my trance. "Everything okay?", she asked. I could tell she was thinking of what to say. "Yes. I was just caught off guard. I pictured Mr. Ryan differently.", she said. Her eyes went wide again. "I mean, I was thrown off by his eyes. They're.... unique.", she said. 'Good catch. She's a fast thinker. Most people respond that way about my eyes. Smirking but satisfied with that response, Maggs turned back towards me. "I told her about the trip and what's expected of her. I'll have her up to date and ready before the trip.", said Maggs. "Wait. You're not coming?", I asked surprised. "Nope. My son is coming to visit with the triplets. Time with them seems more important at this stage in my life.", said Maggs. 'Why does it sound like she's retiring?', I asked myself. Her son lives on pack lands. He visits all the time. "Maggs...", I said at a loss for words. Maggs turned to Evanora and said "Thank you, Evanora. Please excuse us." she nodded and turned to leave. "Nice meeting you, Evanora. I look forward to working with you.", I said slightly smiling trying not to overwhelm her. She blushed anyway, nodded at me then left.
"You found your mate.", said Maggs. "Yeah, but she doesn't know what we are to each other. She only knows that she's been dreaming of me. But what's worse is I doubt she knows what she is.", I said. Silence held between us for a moment. "I need to talk Onyx down. Trying to keep him at bay is difficult right now.", I said taking deep breaths and slowly sipping the latte. I noticed the leaf pattern in the latte. "That's new.", I said. "Her parents owned a restaurant.", said Maggs. "Where is the background check?", I asked. Maggs went to the filing cabinet by the door and pulled out a manilla folder. She handed it to me. "I'll go and start training her. I'll think of something to get her out of the office.", said Maggs. I nodded and she left. My eyes followed her until she joined Evanora. I dropped my head to avoid looking at her. * WE NEED TO CLAIM HER! *, roared Onyx. *Not yet. She doesn't know about us or our world. We need to handle this carefully. The last thing we want is to scare her away. *, I said walking to my chair behind my desk.
I opened the file. I sat there and read it cover to cover. She was found as a newborn by her human parents. There aren't any names from her life that pop out at me except the names Stevens and Donovan. But then again those are also human last names. I'd have to get Paul to dig deeper. "Paul!", I said out loud. I buried it under all these papers. I picked up the receiver to my desk phone and stole a glance of Evanora. I dialed Paul's cell but never took my eyes off her. Yes, she is eye catching but it's more than that. She is genuinely lovely. Her smile and demeanor. She's vibrant. "Dude….", said Paul. "How much did you hear?", I asked quietly. "All of it.", He responded. "I need you to do a background check on a few people in her file.", I said. "Sure. Give me their names.", said Paul. Maggs walked in with my dry cleaning and shoes. "Deputy Nadia Stevens and her HS friends.", I said. Maggs put my stuff away and headed towards the door. "I'm taking Evanora shopping. We'll be at Mimi's," she said before exiting. I nodded. "Want me to send a guy to look after them?", asked Paul. "Yeah. Tell him to stay out of sight. I don't want to make her uncomfortable.", I said. "You got it. I'll have that report by tonight.", said Paul. "Good. Thanks, man.", I said. By the time I hung up the phone the ladies had already left. I called Mimi's store and told them to charge everything to my account.
I sat back and looked over the papers spread before me. 'I found my mate and I'm running a background check. I feel guilty doing this. But I need to know if she knows about us.', I reasoned with myself. I started to put the file back together. I cleared my desk and put her file back in the cabinet then I locked it. I sat down to start my usual day then the phone rang. "Hey. I found the number to Stevens. She was raised in Evanora's hometown and became the deputy straight out of the academy. She was one of the officers that broke the news to Evanora about her parents. That's the only contact on record that she's had with her.", said Paul. "Give me the number.", I said. I copied it down then hung up with Paul. I dialed her number, but she was out in the field. I told the secretary that I would call back. I took a deep breath and started my business day.
By the time I looked up, it was already 5pm. I got a lot of work done. I had to look over the financials for one of my resorts in Greece. The deposits were different from the profits that we were supposed to have made. More than likely, someone is stealing. But I need to do my due diligence. I'm going to have to add this to our trip. She might not mind. I'll tell her tomorrow. After adding Greece to our flight plan, I called Paul to check in on my mate. "Hey. Your guy still has eyes on them?", I asked. "Yeah. I just got off the phone with him. They're going to the shoe side of her store. They should be done soon.", he said. "Think you can squeeze in driving her home?", I asked. "Sure, boss. Not a problem.", said Paul. "Cool. Thanks. I'm going to the mall before I head home. I need to buy something as a gift for my realtor.", I said. "Okay. Sending a guy to you now.", said Paul. "Have him meet me by the car.", I said hanging up the phone. I grabbed my jacket and walked to the elevator.
Her scent was everywhere. She smelt like peaches and something sweet. Like warm caramel. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. 'I can't wait to be closer to that smell.', I said to myself then pictured running my tongue across her neck. The elevator bell went off before my thoughts got any dirtier. I got on the elevator and saw that my eyes were black. *WE NEED TO CLAIM HER! She is vulnerable without us.*, said Onyx. *Is there something you're not telling me?*, I asked him. *It's her. She's wearing her mother's signet.*, said Onyx. When I looked confused, he continued, *She is the Hollows' missing pup." I thought about it for a second. *She does carry the physical characteristics... Are you sure?*, I asked him. *Yes.*, he said. I smiled but ti quickly faded. *My father...*, I said. *We need to claim her. We need to protect her.", he said. *We will.*, I said. The elevator dinged. I texted Paul to wait in my office at home after he returns from dropping off Evanora. "Good evening, sir. What shop are we going to?", asked Sean. He's one of the warriors from the pack. "Change of plans I have to get beck to pack lands.", I said walking to the SUV.
The pack lands are about 15 minutes away from work. When we arrived, I went straight to my office. I found Sophia and Caleb with Shayla and Corey waiting for me. "Hey, Ryan. You look frazzled. What's up?", asked Sophia looking concerned. She's known me the longest out of the group and has an annoying way of knowing how I'm feeling. "Let's wait for Paul. The information I have is sensitive. I don't want to repeat it after this. Scan the room and get rid of your gadgets while we wait for Paul.", I said. closing and locking the windows. Corey pulled out a black box for everyone to drop their stuff in. I took of my watch and placed it in the box long with my cell. Everyone followed suit. Just as we all settled in to wait, Paul came in. He saw the box then dropped his stuff inside. Corey put the lid on it then placed it in a lock box the blocks signals. Once everything was secure, They all turned and gave me their attention. "Okay. So a lot has happened today.", I said taking my seat behind my desk. I explained all that happened and what Onyx saw. "Do you think it's really her?", asked Shayla. I nodded. "It's a strong possibility. She shares the physical traits. I didn't notice her signet though. Onyx did.", I said. "Your Dad is going to lose it if he finds out. He can't know.", said Sophia. Every mumbled their agreeance. "Being that she doesn't know about our world, she's been protected. But that won't last long. Her 21st birthday is coming up.", said Paul. "I know. It's the day that we return from our trip.", I said. "We need to protect her.", said Caleb. "We will. I was thinking that Paul and Sable could come with us on the trip.", I said. "I'm there. I'll find Sable and let her know.", said Paul rising from his seat. "That's not what I meant. We need to bring our Luna home.", said Caleb. "We will, after we tell her the truth. This stays among us for now. No one outside of our circle can know who she is. No one can know I found my mate either.", I said. They all stood and put their fists to their chests. "On our Honor.", they said in unison. Everyone filed out but Sophia stayed behind. "How are you handling all of this?", she asked. I sat back and took a deep breath. "As well as can be expected. I'm happy I finally found her. I just wish it wasn't so complicated.", I said. "Well, that comes with being you. I would find it strange if you found our Luna and there wasn't some kind of complications.", joked Sophia. " Our Luna. I haven't even thought about that.", I said. 'Yup. She might be your mate but she is our Luna. The pack will protect her. Bring her home.", said Sophia. I nodded and she walked over to the lock box. She removed the box of gadgets and gave me my stuff. "The sooner, the better.", she said then turned and left. After mulling things over in my mind, I handled some pack business then went down for dinner.
EVANORA
I woke up on the couch. When my eyes opened the room spun. My stomach churned. I rolled over and threw up into the bowl that Paul placed next to the couch. I close my eyes and try to breathe as evenly as possible. I assessed how I was feeling. 'I don't think anything else is going to come up.', I said to myself. I slowly turned over on to my back and continued my steady breathing. I started to think about what happened leading up to the drinks (that I am now regretting having). The day ran through my mind. I met the man from my dreams, was told that I am going to Italy, and was taken on an extremely expensive shopping spree. Mimi was right, the libations definitely did help. I would have been a complete nervous wreck by the time I got home if I wasn't so tipsy. So instead of me being freaked out that all of that happened, I am forcing myself to focus on feeling calm so that I don't get sick. I need to figure this out. First things first. I got up and showered then threw on my pajamas. I brushed my hair quickly I wrapped it up then went to clean up my "mess". Afterwards, I ate the sandwich that Paul made for me. 'I can't believe I let a stranger into my apartment and I was drunk. But I felt safe, like he was my big brother. I hope I get to hang out with him more.', I thought to myself. I started thinking about how it felt like I knew him. Then I started thinking about Ryan.
I got halfway through my sandwich when I pulled out my journal and personal laptop. I started looking up dreams and whether a person could dream about someone they don't know. I also searched for repetitive dreams. That research led me to soul mates and twin flames. I was hundreds of book titles and websites on the topics. I even found some folklore about fated mates. But that seemed to mostly pertain to supernatural beings like werewolves, mermaids and witches. 'None of these things are real' I said to myself. Frustrated, I closed my laptop and journal. 'I'll check the library tomorrow after work. I might be able to find something there', I said finishing my food. I checked the time on my phone. It was 5 minutes to 2:00 AM. Might as well catch a nap before work. I'll be able to sleep off the rest of this alcohol. I put away my things then went to bed.
Sleep and my dream came quickly. I was in the crimson room again but this time my clothes were different. I was wearing a black silk robe with a red silk night gown that was nearly see-through. I felt sexy. My exposed skin glowed from the light of the fireplace making my complexion seem golden. As I started to look around for Ryan, I heard his voice in my ear. "I finally found you.", he whispered into my ear from behind me. Stunned at how close he was, I stiffened. He gently placed his hands on my hips and turned me towards him. He was only a couple of steps away. I looked into his eyes and instantly relaxed. "How is it that I know your face? I know I've never seen you before.", I said. He smiled and took a step closer. The Moon Goddess chose us to be mates.", he said. My heartbeat started to quicken but it wasn't out of fear. It was from excitement and anticipation. Him being so close to me and me being so scantily clad. "The Moon Goddess? Does that mean we're fated mates?", I asked remembering the folklore I read earlier tonight. "Yes.", he said taking another step closer. His fingertips traced up my arm to my neck leaving tingles wherever they touched. "But I thought only supernatural beings could have faded mates.", I said leaning closer to his lips dying to kiss him. "Yes.", he said bringing his hand to my cheek. "But I am only a human.", I said an inch away from his lips. "We are werewolves.", he said closing the gap between us and kissing me gently. My mind started to race. Werewolves? The question ran through my mind but him kissing me was very distracting. I wanted to ask him more questions, but I didn't want to break this kiss. I've never kissed a man before. Not even in my dreams. Is this what it would be like in real life? His arms snaked around my waist and pulled me gently against him. I pushed his shirt off of his shoulders leaving him in nothing but his slacks. Our kiss deepened. He slipped my robe off of my arms and I unbuckled his belt. When his pants dropped to the floor, he picked me up and carried me to the desk. He released one arm from around me and swept its contents onto the floor. He laid me back and kissed my neck. His hands ran up my sides and….
My eyes shot open 'Damn!', I said to myself disappointed. I looked over at the clock. 4:00 AM. "I couldn't have slept for five more minutes?", I asked out loud. I rolled over and face-planted in the pillow next to me. I might as well start getting ready for work. I dragged myself out of bed and towards the bathroom to brush my teeth. I turned on the water and looked in the mirror then it hit me. 'Work. I work with him. I'm going to see him at work. This is my life now.', I said to myself. The realization hit me like a ton of bricks. For the foreseeable future, the man that I dream of for almost 8 years, will be in front of me every day and haunting my dreams every night. I looked at my shocked reflection. I want to look my best. I want to impress him. When I finished brushing my teeth, I heard my phone chime. I walked over to the island in the kitchen, dug in my purse and pulled out my work phone. It was Maggs. She sent me a text message. -Good morning, Evanora. When you come in, come straight up to the 79th floor. Dimitri and his team will be coming to meet us. See you soon. - I smiled to myself. 'Perfect. This saves me from doing my hair on my own. I got in a workout then jumped in the shower. I cooked myself breakfast that consisted of eggs pancakes and fruit. After eating I took my time picking out my outfit for the day. I chose the white and green dress I made. I found a pair of green shoes that have a multitude of shades. These shoes inspired me to make this dress. They are patten leather heeled sandals with flecks of gold in the pattern. The dress is off-white with green flowers all over it. I found a matching purse, belt, and scarf to go with the shoes. 'I am no fashion designer, but I think Mimi would approve of this outfit.' I said to myself taking one last look in the mirror. I found the key that Paul slid across the floor the night before and reattached it to my key ring. I grabbed my purse and went out the door.
When I got outside, Paul was waiting next to a black SUV. "Good morning, Ms. Silver. Did you sleep well?", he asked with a genuine smile. "Good morning, Paul. Yes, I did. Thank you for last night.", I said. "No need to thank me.", said Paul. "I just wanted to make sure that you were safe." He opened the door to the back seat for me. "Thank you.", I said hopping in. He closed the door behind me then got into the driver's seat. "And thank you for picking me up this morning.", I continued, "But how did you know I would be ready around this time?", I asked. Paul smiled at me through the rearview mirror. "Well, I know Mr. Ryan likes to start his day around 8:00 AM so I figured you would be ready around 7:20 or 7:30. I was right.", he said smiling and pulling off. "I got here about 20 minutes ago. I wasn't waiting that long.", he said. "You should have knocked. I was just eating breakfast. You could have joined me or at the very least have had some coffee.", I said. "That's ok I had my coffee earlier.", he said. "Oh. Well, let me get your number so just in case this comes up again I can call you.", I said taking out my work phone. Paul gave me his information but when I tried to add it to my contacts, I got a notification that the contact already existed. "Oh, you're already in my phone.", I said. "I thought I might be since I'm the head of Mr. Ryan's personal security, but I wasn't sure.", he said. "Ok. Breakfast next time?", I asked. "Sure." he said with a friendly smile. He doesn't look so intimidating anymore. We carried on light conversation for the rest of our ride to work.
After parking in the garage, Paul escorted me up to the 79th floor. "This f is the penthouse. There are 3 master suites and 4 bedrooms. There is also a study, billiards room, and a personal salon.", said Paul. He led me to a room that turned out to be a luxury salon with a dressing room in the back. The entire room was white, tan and gold. There were three wash sinks. Five stylist stands, mirrors and chairs. "Wow" I said. "Good morning.", Maggs sings walking towards us. "Good morning, Maggie.", said Paul. "I hope you are well rested, but if you're not, you will be by the time we are done.", Maggie said to me looping her arm through mine and leading me towards the back. I looked over my shoulder and waved to Paul. He smiled and waved back then turned and left. Maggie led me towards the back of the dressing room where there was a short hallway with three doors. "This is your room, and this is your masseuse, Donna. When you're done, then we will see Dimitri. I've already had mine, so I'm going to get my hair done while you're in here. I'll see you in the office. Enjoy yourself.", she said. Maggie turned and left the room before I could say anything. 'I guess her wanting company was just a ploy to get me to say yes.', I said to myself staring out the door for a moment. I half-heartedly smiled at my masseuse then went to change into my robe.
Donna not only gave me a great massage, but she also gave me a facial, and did paraffin wraps for my hands and feet. I felt so relaxed I fell asleep twice. Still in my robe, I walked out to the salon. Standing in the middle of the floor was a tall thick man. He was slightly tanned with white hair and white stubble on his chin letting me know that the white hair was real. He had tattoos up and down his thick arms and was clad in black clothes with silver jewelry. 'Seriously! Is every person around here a model or model material?', I asked myself. Ms. Silver, my name is Dimitri, and I will be your stylist for today. These are my assistants they will be doing your makeup and nails. I shyly waved my hand to everyone. "Please come take a seat.", said Dimitri. I sat in his chair waiting to be told he couldn't do my hair. My hair has been natural for a few months. I haven't had the energy to deal with trying to straighten it. He unwrapped my scarf, but Dimitri never showed any signs of being intimidated and got to work on detangling my hair. He asked me questions about color, cutting and allergies. He sectioned it off, then we went to the sink. He took out each section and shampooed them independently. He did the same with the conditioner. Once my hair was rinsed out, he sectioned it off again and took me back to his chair. "I am impressed. Not many people know what to do with my hair. Did you learn professionally?", I asked. "No. I learned with my sisters.", he smiled. "I was adopted by a black woman when I was 10. She got married shortly after and gave me six sisters. Wash day was crazy. I wanted to help so she taught me. I loved it. When I got older, I went to cosmetology school and the rest is history.", he said. "Nice.", I said. "That's my family.", he said pointing at a picture taped to the mirror. His mother was a short deep brown woman who, of course, was gorgeous. Her daughters looked just like her just different skin tones from deep brown to light brown. "They're beautiful.", I said. "Thank you.", he smiled proudly. "Do you do natural styles too?", I asked. "I do it all.", he said flashing a vibrant smile. He added some product to my hair then started to blow it out. After the blow out, he asked me if I wanted a particular style. I had no idea what styles and looks were popular right now. I've kind of been in my own head lately, so I gave him free range to do what he thought would be best.
Once I was done being rubbed, poked, and prodded, I got dressed and looked at myself in the mirror. Dimitri did a wonderful job with my hair. He cut long layers and then curled it so that the layers showed. My hair was shiny and healthy. My makeup was done perfectly. I looked like I belonged on the cover of a magazine. As I admired his work, Dmitri came to me with a small black duffle bag. "These are all the products that I used on you. From shampoo to make up. I made sure to include a couple of special things that I think you might like. These will help keep up your hair between appointments.", he said. "Thank you so much. I love the way I look!", I said. "You're very welcome. It was a pleasure meeting you.", he said giving me a slight bow then leaving. 'Time to start my day.', I said to myself and headed back to the elevator.
I walked into the office, but Ryan wasn't at his desk. I checked my phone. Lunchtime. He might be out at lunch I thought to myself. "You look wonderful.", said Maggs. "Thank you, but I thought you wanted company?", I asked. "It was the only way you'd say yes yesterday. But I'm sure you won't need much convincing next time.", she said with a wink. I chuckled. "This is my first time seeing your hair out. I didn't imagine it was that long.", I said admiring Maggie's hair. She spun and gave me a good look. Her red hair was about a foot away from the floor with her sitting in her chair. It looked thick and shiny. "I don't let anyone but him touch my hair. He does Ryan's hair too.", she said turning to face me. "My head is spinning from all this. The job, the pampering... I'm not used to such luxury.", I said. "None of us were but you get used to it. We are still who we are. We never forget where we came from and we always help others when we can. These are just the perks of the job. it's okay to enjoy it.", she said. I nodded in understanding. "Ready for the real work to begin?", she asked. "Yes. Let me make coffee first. Would you like one?", I asked. "No, thanks darlin'.", she said picking up her laptop and some files. "Join me in the conference room when you're ready." I held the door open for her then followed her through.
I made myself a latte. I was thinking of which pastry to pick when the smell of mint and freshly cut grass filled my nose. Yes, the scent lingered in the office, but it was only strong when he was close by. "Good morning.", I heard him say from behind me. "Or is it afternoon?", he asked with a playful tone in his voice. My heart rate increased. I turned around to face him. His face changed from mischievous to amazement. "I see you've met Dimitri.", he said in a low voice. "Yes, I did. I hope it's OK.", I said nervously bringing my hands up to fiddle with my hair. "You look amazing,", he said, "and yes. It is absolutely OK. That's why the salon is upstairs. It's for our personal use." I blushed. "Is that latte for me?", he asked pointing at the mug in my hand. "Oh, no. But you can have it if you want. It turns out we like our lattes the same way. I can make another one.", I said handing him the mug. He accepted it. "So did you understand the blueprints and the contracts for our new prospective site?", he asked as I started working on a new latte. I don't fully understand the contracts, but the blueprints were easier.", I said honestly. "Good. Have you reviewed your schedule today?", he asked me. "Not yet. I was just about to sit down and go over what needed to be done today and Maggs is going to get me acquainted with the systems.", I said as I finished up my latte and turned to face him again. "I'll be in my office. After you've reviewed it, come and speak to me.", he said getting up off of my desk and walking to his office. My eyes followed his form. The way he moved. He wore his clothes well. Although Ryan is a large man, his clothes seemed to downplay his physique. I could see his muscles peeking out every time he moved. He had his hair up in a loose bun today. He wore a cream color button down shirt, with tan color slacks. Brown shoes with a brown belt. 'Goddess, I understand that saying now: looks good enough to eat.', I said to myself biting my lip. Hearing mags come in snapped me out of my trance. "Ready when you are.", she said. "Mr. Ryan asked me to come see him for a moment. I'll come straight to you once he's done.", I said. "Okay. I'll make a few phone calls while I wait.", said Maggs. She sat in the chair facing away from Ryan's office and pulled out her phone. I picked up my cell and work journal then went to his office.
I walked into Mr. Ryan's office. He was sitting behind his mahogany desk in a burnt orange leather chair. "Please, have a seat.", he said and gestured to the chair on the other side of the desk. "I just wanted to talk to you about a few things before we left for Italy.", I move to sit in the chair he pointed out and opened my work journal ready to take notes "So. first things first, when I originally made the reservations for the trip, Maggs was supposed to be the one coming with me. I'm not sure if you overlooked it, but I ordered a two-bedroom suite for our stay. I just wanted to know if you were OK with us staying together or if you wanted your own suite. You would have your own room and bathroom, but I completely understand if you're uncomfortable with the arrangements.", he said. I could feel myself blushing. I tried to gather myself quickly and said, "I'm OK with it. There's no need to get another suite." My cheeks felt like they were on fire. I know even with make up on, he had to have seen it. But he was merciful and pretended not to notice. "OK. Do you know any Italian?", he asked me. "No, I don't unfortunately. Just simple words like good morning, hello goodbye.", I said. "OK. Here at Ryan Enterprises, we travel a lot for business. We go to various countries and sometimes have to stay for extended periods of time. I have learned Italian, French, Greek and Dutch. Maggie knows Gaelic, Russian and German. Paul knows about 10 Polynesian languages. I want you to pick and learn 3 languages. Not only would it be good for business but it's also a good skill to have. Do you have any in mind?", he asked giving me a soft smile. I cleared my throat, praying not to squeak out my answer. "Spanish, Korean, and Japanese.", I said. "Great. I'll give you the number for a great tutor. Next, I'm going to give you a company car. I know yesterday was a bit overwhelming but as you've been told it's for a reason. I value my privacy and safety. And that of the people around me. The company car is not just for appearances. It is an armored car. The frame and doors are reinforced, and the glass is bulletproof. Not only that but the car itself has a tracker built into it so that Paul can keep tabs on you if anything should happen.", he said sliding over a set of keys towards me. "But..." "You have a car.", he completed my sentence for me. "I am not asking you to give up your personal car. I am just asking that you use this one more often. It's 10 times safer than your current vehicle.", he said. I looked at the keys then looked back up at him and he was making a puppy dog face. I couldn't help but laugh. "OK, fine.", I said taking the keys and putting them in the pocket of my dress. "Good.", he said smiling back at me. "So back to this business about the trip. Something came up yesterday and I need to go to Greece before we come back. I'm going there to look at the books and talk to the management team. Are you OK with taking an extra couple of days to go to Greece?", he asked me. "Yes!", I said quickly. It made us both laugh. "Sorry.", I said. "Italy and Greece are on my travel list." He smiled and said, "Awesome. Sounds like your dreams are coming true. I'm glad I could be a part of it", he said smiling. I nearly died. 'If only you knew', I said to myself smiling back at him. "Did you have a chance to look at today's tasks?", he asked. I pulled them up on my phone and skimmed them quicky. "I have here in front of me.", I said. We went through the tasks one by one, and he explained what he wanted or needed. It went by fairly quick. "That's all. Do you have any questions?", he asked me. I shook my head while finishing the last of my notes. "Great.", he said. I closed my book and stood to leave. I picked up mu half empty mug and I noticed he finished his drink. I reached for the empty mug in front of him. He reached out and touched my hand. I could feel the tingles dance under his touch. Just like in the dream. "I'll take that out later.", he said looking in my eyes. I felt my body temperature rise. I wanted to kiss him... and more. His scent became more powerful, filling my nose. I wanted to jump over the desk and have my way with this luscious man.
I thought about the walls being glass and being exposed. Maggie. I got hold of myself and removed my hand. "Ok.", I said in a low voice. I turned and went to the conference room. Maggs just finished a call when I walked in. "Are you okay?', Maggs asked alarmed. "Yes. Why?", I asked confused checking myself. "You are beet red, darlin'. Sit. I'll get you some water.", said Maggs getting up. I took the seat she just vacated because I didn't want to have a line of sight to Ryan. Maggie came back with a cold bottle of water. "I've seen the way women are affected by Ryan but it's never been to this extent.", said Maggs starting to fan me with a folder. I didn't realize how hot I was until just now. "I don't know what happened. This has never happened before. Is he watching?", I asked cracking open the bottle and drinking. "No, darlin'. His nose is buried in a file.", she said. "Oh, thank the Goddess.", I said relieved. "Thank the Goddess? Who? Selene?", she asked. "Oh. No. My Mother did believe in organized religion. Her deity was Gaia. The mother of Earth. She believed that we should give Her thanks for providing the food we ate and the beautiful world that we live in. She even gave me herbal remedies as a child instead of medicine from the doctor. It worked well because I barely got sick as a child.", I said taking another sip of water. "Oh OK. We follow Selene, the Moon Goddess, who is the grand daughter of Gaia. You are in good company with us.", she said smiling.
Finally starting to feel cooler, I took a deep breath. "Better?", she asked. "Much!", I said. "Alrighty then. Let's get started.", said Maggs opening a folder. She showed me her filing system, how to manipulate the computer programs, and how to prepare contract templates. Before I knew it, the day was over. We cleaned up the conference room and headed back to our prospective desks. Maggie quickly put away the folders then called for the elevator. She popped her head in then said, popped her head back in. "Don't forget you have a fitting at Mimi's tomorrow. I won't be coming in. I have some personal matters to attend to. Email me if you have any questions. Goodnight.", she waved and rushed to get on the elevator. "But.." 'I don't remember how to get there.', I finished my sentence in my head. I heard Ryan come out of his office. "Hey.", he said walking towards while putting on his jacket. It seemed to have happened in slow motion. His muscles moved under his shirt and my heart started racing. He slipped his arms into his jacket and fixed his collar. My flower was moist watching him walk towards me. He stopped in front of me, inhaled, then raised an eyebrow. "Everything okay?", he asked with his mischievous grin. "Y-yes. I have a fitting at Mimi's tomorrow but I don't remember how to get there.", I said barely holding it together. "I can have Paul take you if you like.", he said taking a step closer. His scent wafted past my nose. I was about to grab him but I took a step back instead. "Th-thank you, Mr. Ryan.", I whispered. I was trembling, dying for him to touch me. "Please, call me Ryan.", he smiled at me. "Ryan. Call me Eva.", I managed to say. I grabbed my purse. "Well, then. Goodnight.", I said and quickly walked to the elevator. He followed me. "I'm leaving for the night too. I'll walk you to your car.", he said. I was about to protest. "I insist.", he said. I smiled and turned toward the elevator. After a short uncomfortable silence, the elevator arrived. I got on. He scanned his finger then pushed the button for the garage. I pushed myself into the corner. "So, Eva, are you single?", he asked leaning against the far wall, respecting my space. I looked at him with my eyes wide. "Y-yes, I am.", I whispered. He smiled and moved a step closer. "So am I.", he said in a low smooth voice. I shifted in place having nowhere to go. I felt like prey to a predator but I prayed to the Goddess to be caught. "You might not believe me but I feel like I've met you before.", he said smiling. "Actually, same here.", I said. 'What? Did that just come out of my mouth?', I asked myself in disbelief. He smiled. "This might be awkward because I'm your boss, but I'd like to get to know you on a personal level. Would you have dinner with me?", he asked. The elevator dinged and the door opened. He held out his arm indicating I should exit first. I almost forgot how to walk but i managed to put one foot in front of the over. "I don't know what to say.", I said. 'What? Why am I playing coy? I've wanted to be with him since the first time I dreamt of him.', I said yelling at myself. I made it to my car and was ready to open the door until he placed his hand on it to stop me. I turned to face him. He leaned in close and said in a low voice."Say, Yes." My heart jumped into my throat. I couldn't speak. 'NOD!' I yelled at myself. I nodded yes. He smiled then opened my door for me. "Great.", he said. "Pick you up at 7?", he asked. I nodded again then moved to get into the driver's seat. He closed my door then waved. I shyly smiled than started my car. I drove off. I looked at him through the rearview window. He watched me drive off with the biggest smile and red cheeks. 'He is blushing!', I said to myself excitedly as I drove home to get ready for our first date.
RYAN
I went upstairs to get ready for my date. I called Paul upstairs to tell him the news. "Hey Alpha. What's up?", asked Paul. "I asked Eva on a date and she said yes.", I said. I rushed around the master suite getting ready. "That's great! Where are you going to take her?", asked Paul. "I was thinking that restaurant on the lake.", I said laying a black suit out on the bed. "Nice but don't wear that.", said Paul walking to the closet. He pulled out a dark grey suit with a white shirt. then pulled out a tie and pocket square that was nearly the same color as my eye. "See what I did there?", asked Paul smirking. I chuckled and nodded. "This will make your eyes stand out and your hair won't blend in with the jacket.", he said. I grabbed my black shoes with the green bottoms and my emerald cufflinks and held them up to show Paul. "Perfect.", he said. I placed them next to the suit he laid out. "I'm going to shower. You're driving me tonight.", I said heading towards the bathroom. "What? Why? Don't you want to be alone with her?", Paul asked. "Of course I do. But if we run into any trouble, I want you to protect her.", I said closing the door behind me. If my father finds out that I found my fated mate, she will be in danger. He'll try to kill her. His ambitions have blinded him his whole life. He nearly brought our pack to ruins because of them. He had me because he wanted a strong bloodline. 'I will not let him hurt my mate. Ever.'. I told myself as I started the shower.
I decided to wear my hair half up, half down with a few strands left out to dangle in my face. My stomach was in knots going to pick up Eva. "Breathe.", said Paul. "I'm breathing. I just can't wait for her to know about us. About our world. I've waited so long and I'm so close now. I'm excited. If anything I'm worried I'll move to fast and scare her.", I said rubbing my hands together. "Everything will go the way it's supposed to go.", said Paul bringing the SUV to a stop in front of Eva's house. "Ready?", he asked putting the truck in park and unbuckling his seat belt. I nodded and he hopped out. Paul walked around and opened my door. I picked up the dozen rose bouquet off of the seat next to me and stepped out. I smiled at Paul nervously. He smiled back and gave me a push in the direction of her house. I walked up the steps to her front door and rang her bell. Shortly after she opened the door and stepped through. Her hair was pinned up with the exception of a few spiral curls that accentuated the curves of her face. Her makeup was flawless. If it wasn't for her eyeshadow I wouldn't have known she was wearing any at all. She wore a burgundy dress that hugged her body like a second skin, with black pumps. "You look beautiful.", I said. She smiled and said "Thank you. And you look very handsome tonight." I handed her the beautifully arranged flowers. "Thank you.", she said smiling and taking them from me. "Are you ready?", I asked. "Yes.", she smiled. She locked her door and I held out my arm. She smiled up at me and took it. "Hi Paul!", she said as we approached the SUV. "Good evening Ms. Silver.", he said giving her a slight bow. "Please, call me Eva.", she said. "Eva. Your chariot awaits.", he said gesturing towards the open door. She climb in and slid over to the next seat so that I could get in. Paul closed the door then walked around and got into the driver's seat.
"Where are we going?", she asked. "Do you not like surprises?", I asked. "I do but I'm also curious. I haven't had much time to explore the city but I have looked up a few restaurants that I would like to go to.", she said. "It's an upscale bistro on the lake. It's called Piede Di Montagna, Which translates to mountain foot.", I said smiling. "Mountain foot?", she asked with her nose crinkled. I laughed. "Yeah. I guess the owner's didn't know what to name it, so they used its location as a name. Don't worry though. The food is amazing.", I said. "Okay.", she said. She sat in her seat with her knees closed sitting erect. "Are you nervous?", I asked. She shook her head no but at the same time said, "Very." I laughed a little and said, "Me too. I went through four outfits before Paul helped me.", I said. She cringed and held up seven fingers. We both laughed at ourselves. "So where are you from?", she asked looking more relaxed. "Here. I was born and raised about ten minutes from work. Me and my roommates live in the house I was born in. What about you?", I asked. "A small city called Cottage Lake. It's outside Seattle.", she said. "What made you move out here?", I asked. She looked out the window before answering. "I needed a fresh start. Things changed after I graduated HS and with my parents gone..." Her voice trailed off. I didn't push. A short silence hung in the air then she asked, "How old are you?" I smiled grateful I didn't ruin her mood. "I'm 25. I'll be 26 in July.", I said. "Really? I thought you were older.", she said. "Why?", I asked. "The way you carry yourself. The fact that you're a successful business man. But I guess it's mostly because you give off a fatherly vibe. Like you think it's your job to protect everyone." she said. "Well, I had to grow up quick. My mother died when I was 6 and my father was absent afterwards. So I made my own family. I can't remember a time that Paul wasn't around. He's my best friend and brother. I wouldn't be where I am today without him and my other friends.", I said smiling at her. "And what about you? How old are you?", I asked. "I'm turning 21 soon. The day we are due back from our trip actually.", she said. "Do you have any plans?", I asked. "Yeah. A book, blanket and bottle of wine.", she said smiling but the smile didn't reach her eyes. "That sounds awful for a 21st Birthday. Why don't you go out? Hang out with your friends and family?", I asked. "Well, I'm the only child of parents that were only children. The grandparents passed when I was young. All of my friends went to college and don't have free time until spring break. Besides, I plan on having a great time with that book.", giving me another sad smile. "What made you ask me out?", she asked changing the subject. "How could I not? You're very easy on the eyes and seem like a genuinely kind person. That the kind of woman I want by my side.", I said. "I'm sure there's no lack of women throwing themselves at you.", she said. "I look for quality. Not quantity.", I said looking at her intently. She blushed and looked at her hands. "Why did you accept?", I asked in a low voice leaning towards her. She was caught off guard by my question and the sudden flirting. I could tell she was scrambling for an answer. "Honestly, I was curious about you. I wanted to see what you're like outside of work.", she said cooly. "What do you think so far?", I asked. "I think I'm in for quite and evening.", she said flirting back.
