Chapter 4 - Echoes of a Lost Heritage

As the shimmering wall of water dissipated, we found ourselves in a different realm altogether. It was a place of ethereal beauty, bathed in soft hues of blue and purple. The air felt charged with magic, tingling with an otherworldly energy that sent shivers down my spine.

Neria and I stood on a lush meadow, dotted with vibrant flowers of every shade. A gentle breeze carried the sweet scent of blossoms, caressing our faces and whispering tales of enchantment.

In the distance, I saw towering trees, their branches reaching for the sky like ancient guardians of this mystical realm. Their leaves shimmered with iridescent colors, reflecting the light of a hidden sun. The melody of birdsong filled the air, creating a symphony of nature's harmony.

What caught my attention was a huge barrier with a resplendent glow, stretching as far as the eye could see. It shimmered with an array of colors, reflecting the beauty of the realm itself. The barrier was imbued with protective magic, woven with the essence of nature and fortified by my growing connection to the elements.

'How pretty.' I thought.

However, despite the magnificent view, I remained unfazed by the breathtaking beauty before me. Having encountered countless wonders in my existence, I had developed a sense of detachment towards mere aesthetics. However, I couldn't help but appreciate the craftsmanship and purpose behind the barrier that stood before us.

"In this realm, we are safeguarded from external forces that may disrupt our peaceful existence," Neria elucidated, her voice carrying a sense of solemnity. "The barrier is a testament to the ancient magic that binds our people and the land together. It not only provides protection but also serves as a symbol of our unity and resilience."

"Long ago," she began, "the Moon Elves lived in harmony with our kin and other races. We shared our knowledge, our magic, and our gifts with the world. But darkness loomed on the horizon."

She paused; her gaze distant as she recalled the treacherous betrayal that forever changed the fate of her people.

"Our blood, our eyes that held the essence of the moon's light, our innate connection to the magic of the cosmos... These were coveted by others. Jealousy and greed seeped into the hearts of our own kind and other races alike."

"We were hunted down, our kindred spirits captured, our gifts stolen. Moon Elves were pursued relentlessly, our magic exploited for personal gain. The world turned its back on us, and we were forced into hiding."

Neria sighed as she sat down on the soft grass, her eyes on me.

"We erected barriers of secrecy and concealed our presence, retreating into the depths of enchanted forests and hidden realms. It became a matter of survival, a fight to protect our heritage, our magic, and our very existence."

Neria's words hung in the air, a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by her kind. I could feel the weight of their burden and the pain they had endured.

"Our hidden existence allows us to protect what remains of our culture, our wisdom, and our sacred connection to the moon's magic. It is a necessity to preserve our heritage and safeguard our future. We must remain hidden until the day comes when we can emerge, united with other races in peace and harmony once again."

As Neria's gaze lifted to the sky, her eyes narrowed, and a bitter scoff escaped her lips. Irony laced her voice as she spoke, a tinge of sadness underlying her words.

"And yet, today of all days, I find myself departing from my kind, my safe zone, my family... everything," she said, her voice tinged with a mix of resignation and defiance.

Her gaze shifted from the beauty of the realm to the vast expanse above, where distant stars twinkled with their secrets. The weight of her decision hung heavy in the air, and for a moment, a hint of vulnerability flickered across her face.

"I have walked these hidden paths for centuries, bound by duty and the necessity to protect her highness. But as the world around us changes, as the tides of fate shift, so too must I."

Her voice trailed off, and her eyes returned to the barrier, a symbol of both protection and isolation. The barrier's radiant glow seemed to mock her, a constant reminder of the sacrifices she had made and the path she was about to embark upon.

A bitter smile curled at the corners of Neria's lips, tainted with the taste of bitter irony. The beauty of the realm no longer held its allure for her; instead, it whispered of the possibilities she was leaving behind, the connections she was severing, and the unknown that awaited her beyond the safety of the barrier.

"I have witnessed the cruelty of this world, the depths of darkness that reside within even the purest of hearts," Neria continued, her voice filled with a hardened resolve. "And so, I must leave it all behind, forsake the comfort of my kin and the familiarity of our hidden existence."

Her eyes met mine, carrying a mixture of determination and sorrow. The weight of her decision hung heavily in the air, casting a shadow over the once vibrant meadow.

I listened attentively to Neria's words, sensing the depth of her emotions and the gravity of her decision. The realm around us seemed to echo her conflicted feelings, as if the very fabric of nature understood the sacrifices she was making.

Once again, Neria inhaled a deep breath.

"Listen little one." She began, her voice filled with a bittersweet tone.

"We cannot stay here, in this realm that has been my home for so long. You see, your presence here would bring rejection and judgment from fellow elves. Your mixed traits make you different, and the Moon Elves hold tightly to their traditions and the purity of their bloodline."

She paused, her voice trembling with the weight of the truth she was about to reveal.

"Your existence itself breaks the laws of nature and challenges the rules of the Moon Elves. Your three mixed traits, a reflection of your unique heritage, make you a living testament to the love that defied boundaries and sparked the creation of a secret baby."

Neria paused, looking down at my innocent eyes.

"You see, your mother was accepted among the elves because she was a royal elf. But you, my precious child, would not be received with the same compassion. The purity of the Moon Elves' bloodline is a deeply ingrained belief, and the revelation of your mixed traits would be seen as a disruption, a threat to their way of life."

A tear escaped Neria's eye and crystallized before it touched the soft grass, capturing the essence of her sorrow and determination.

"I cannot bear to see you face rejection, my little one. I cannot subject you to a life of isolation and judgment. And so, I must leave this realm, forsake the comfort of my kin and the familiarity of our hidden existence, in order to protect you and keep your secret safe."

Neria's voice cracked with emotion as she leaned closer, pressing a gentle kiss on my forehead.

Neria stood up, a determined look in her eyes, and took a step towards the barrier. With each stride, she seemed to shed the weight of her past, embracing the unknown that awaited her on the other side.

As we reached the shimmering barrier, Neria raised her hands, her fingers delicately tracing the intricate patterns of an ancient spell. The air crackled with anticipation, as if even the elements themselves recognized the significance of this moment.

"I know this spell," Neria spoke softly, her voice filled with a mix of confidence and reverence. "As the personal maid of the crown princess, I have been entrusted with the knowledge of ancient magic. My role extended beyond serving her highness; I was her confidante, her protector, and her keeper of secrets. I have cast it before, ventured beyond this barrier on a few occasions. But this time, it feels different. This time, I am alone."

She paused, her gaze fixed on the barrier before us, its radiant glow illuminating her determined expression.

"The incantation is an invocation to the forces of nature, a plea for safe passage and protection. It harnesses the power of the elements, aligning them with our purpose and intent. This spell can only be used from the inside, to have access of passage from the outside, you'll need a different spell, which is not revealed to me."

With a steady voice, Neria began to chant the incantation. The words flowed from her lips, carrying a melody that resonated with the very essence of the realm we were leaving behind.

As the final syllable left her lips, a surge of energy radiated from Neria, pulsating through the barrier. The shimmering wall of light responded, parting before us like a curtain, revealing a path to the world beyond.

"Once I step out of the barrier, there is no returning."

With a deep breath, Neria stepped forward.
