Apparently, the eyeball that came out of the ripple was a blessing of the scarlet moon. Although the creature on the moon preferred to let its underlings do everything for it, it sometimes bestowed some mutations on them. Some of the blood creatures received wings, better eyesight, smarter brains, etc.
Esther was also sure that if Lorn hadn't killed the Bloodkin so quickly and abruptly, the latter would've received countless mutations, eventually even overpowering Lorn.
