Her hair had grown much longer since she came out of prison; it now reached below her shoulders. But she was a person who hated hassles, so she simply had combed it into a ponytail. Coupled with her casual outfit, she looked like a college student just out from a campus.

Gem Atkinson stepped forward, leaning against the dressing table and staring at her intently.
"What's up?"
"Since it's vacation, what are your plans?" Gem asked.
"I'm going back to Lake City. The anniversaries of my parents' deaths are approaching."
"And then?"
"Then I'll prepare to celebrate your and the little darling's birthdays."
Speaking of which, Gem didn't typically celebrate his birthday. This day was too significant. The day before his birthday, was the day of the plane incident that took Forsythia Brown's parents' lives. So every year on his birthday, Gem almost always accompanied her to Lake City. But this year, with the addition of a little lady, things would, of course, be different.
