Chapter 25 - Mission

In an opulent chamber deep inside the castle, Jayce stood beside Captain Jax, anticipation thick in the air as they awaited the arrival of Duke Kassadin. The room seemed to hold its breath as the Duke made his grand entrance, commanding attention with every step.

"Jayce, allow me to introduce you to Duke Kassadin," Captain Jax's voice carried a note of reverence.

Jayce inclined his head respectfully towards the Duke, his gaze fixed upon the regal figure before him. "It is an honor to meet you, Duke Kassadin."

The Duke was a fat man with a round figure but exuded an air of danger that made the hair on the back of Jayce's neck stand.

The Duke's piercing eyes bore into Jayce, assessing him with a mixture of scrutiny and expectation. "Captain Jax has spoken highly of your potential," he remarked, his voice laced with intrigue. "Now, let me explain what the Order of the Black Phoenix truly stands for."

Curiosity ignited within him, Jayce posed the question that lingered on his mind. "What is the Order of the Black Phoenix, Duke Kassadin?"

The Duke's voice resonated with authority as he began to unravel the enigma. "The Order is a clandestine organization dedicated to the protection of the Fire King and the Kingdom of Fire," he elucidated. "Our values are rooted in loyalty, secrecy, and ruthlessness. We are fiercely loyal to the King, we guard our tongues against revealing any secrets, and we carry out our missions with unyielding ruthlessness."

The Duke's gaze intensified, his eyes fixed upon Jayce. "I hope you will prove to be as loyal, secretive, and ruthless as Varus," he stated, his expectations palpable.

Jayce's voice rang with determination as he offered his solemn assurance. "You have my word, Duke Kassadin. I will embody those values to the fullest."

The Duke nodded approvingly, acknowledging Jayce's commitment. "Very well. I hereby assign you the role of an enforcer within the Order," he declared, the weight of his words hanging in the air. "Unlike spies or assassins, enforcers protect my interests and intimidate our rivals."

Jayce raised an eyebrow, a hint of skepticism in his voice. "Is it your personal interests that I'll be protecting, or the interests of the Kingdom?" he questioned.

The Duke chuckled, a deep and resonant sound. "They are one and the same, Jayce. My interests are the interests of the Kingdom," he clarified, his conviction unwavering.

The Duke said, "You have been chosen for a special mission, Jayce. I have many spies hidden within the Kingdom of Earth, but someone is exposing them one by one. I need to find out who and how they are achieving this. My operatives have captured a person who knows something about this, and he is under an animation spell that prevents him from escaping or talking. Your mission is to escort this prisoner from the port to the castle, where I will interrogate him personally. Do you understand?"

Jayce nodded. Turning to Captain Jax, the Duke issued another command. "Captain Jax, I entrust you with the responsibility of escorting Jayce on this mission," he directed, his voice firm.

Jayce and Captain Jax exchanged a quick glance.

Leaving the Duke's chamber, Jayce walked down the dimly lit hallway, his mind consumed with the weight of his new mission. The air was heavy with the scent of aged parchment and polished wood, the silence broken only by the distant echoes of his footsteps. It was in this solitude that he found himself accosted by an unexpected presence.

In the shadows of the empty corridor, a figure emerged, bald and surly, wearing the robes of an acolyte of the Order of the Black Phoenix. Sett, his name whispered among the ranks, exuded an aura of raw aggression. The glint of steel caught Jayce's attention as Sett unsheathed his sword, a sinister smile playing on his lips.

"Look around, notice there are no witnesses this time of night," Sett growled, his voice laced with a dangerous edge.

Jayce's eyes narrowed, his mind racing for a solution. With a sigh, he responded, "Look over there," pointing subtly in another direction.

Caught off guard, Sett turned his gaze, momentarily distracted. In that fleeting moment, Jayce seized the opportunity. Whispering an incantation, he channeled his magic, his voice barely audible as he spoke to Sett with a commanding tone.

"You don't actually want to fight me," Jayce murmured, his words carrying a compelling force. "You want to go and tuck Sion snugly into bed and kiss him good night."

A haze seemed to envelop Sett's eyes, his aggression dissipating as his mind became clouded. His voice, now distant and dreamlike, echoed through the corridor. "I don't want to kill you," Sett mumbled, his words tinged with confusion. "I want to put little Sion to bed and kiss him good night."

In this altered state, Sett turned away, his purpose redirected. The tension in the air dissipated as he departed, leaving Jayce standing alone in the hallway, his heart pounding with the thrill of his successful diversion.

The morning sun bathed the courtyard in a golden glow as Jayce made his final preparations to depart. His mind was focused on the task at hand, the mission that awaited him beyond the castle walls. However, his train of thought was abruptly interrupted when Captain Jax appeared, a hint of embarrassment etched upon his face.

"Jayce, there's been a change of plans," Captain Jax began, his voice tinged with unease. "The Duke has decided that you shouldn't carry out the mission alone."

Jayce's brows furrowed in mild frustration, his mind racing to comprehend the implications. "What's the big deal? I can handle it on my own," he responded dismissively, underestimating the significance of this revelation.

Captain Jax hesitated for a moment before delivering the unexpected news. "Your partner for this mission will be... Irelia," he revealed, his voice tinged with uncertainty.

Jayce's eyes widened, his expression a mix of surprise and incredulity. "Who is Irelia?" he exclaimed, his arms crossing defiantly.

A young girl stepped out from behind Jax.

Captain Jax nodded, his gaze fixed on Jayce. "This is Irelia. But don't let her appearance fool you. She may be young, but she's a gifted analyst," he explained earnestly. "But she's never been outside the castle before and the Duke believes she has the skills we need for this mission."

Jayce's frown deepened, his skepticism apparent. He looked Irelia up and down, his gaze lingering on her petite frame. "I'm not babysitting anyone," he declared, his voice firm.

Irelia's face flushed with anger, her voice rising in protest. "I don't need a babysitter! I'm more capable than you think," she retorted, her determination shining through.

After a brief but heated exchange, Jayce and Irelia begrudgingly agreed to work together, their shared mission forging an uneasy alliance.

As they made their way towards the castle entrance, they were met with an unexpected sight. Sion and Sett stood there, Sion's face contorted with fury and Sett nursing a blackened eye.

"This isn't over," Sion growled, his voice dripping with menace, before storming off in a fit of rage.

"What's up with him?" Jax asked.

Jayce smile and shrugged. "Maybe he had a rough night."
