The old man didn't mind the way his mother treated him. He made a massive mistake all those years ago and ever since then, he had been getting a cold shoulder from her.
But to err is to human and he was once human, just like his mother. As for the old mistake, he has made amends for most of his life while living as a hermit. So much so that many have forgotten his existence and only the machines remember him from the glory days.
